After 15 years of use, I self-tapered off Alprazolam which is Xanax in year 2022. For over a decade, I took a quarter milligram at bedtime as a prescribed sleep medication. Here is my story how I successfully tapered off this horrible drug all by myself. You, too, can get off this horrible drug.

Benzodiazepines are a type of medication known as tranquilizers. Familiar names include Valium and Xanax. They are some of the most commonly prescribed medications in the United States. When people without prescriptions obtain and take these drugs for their sedating effects, use turns into abuse.
Benzodiazepines are a type of sedative medication. This means they slow down the body and brain's functions. They can be used to help with anxiety and insomnia (difficult getting to sleep or staying asleep).
The most common benzodiazepines are the prescription drugs Valium®, Xanax®, Halcion®, Ativan®, and Klonopin®. Tolerance can develop, although at variable rates and to different degrees.
What are the long-term effects of taking benzodiazepines?
Mental and physical health. The long-term use of benzodiazepines may have a similar effect on the brain as alcohol, and is also implicated in depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), mania, psychosis, sleep disorders, sexual dysfunction, delirium, and neurocognitive disorders.
Using benzodiazepines, even as prescribed, can lead to physical dependence and withdrawal if you stop taking the drug suddenly. Withdrawal can be life threatening. Using benzodiazepines can also lead to misuse and addiction. Misuse of benzodiazepines increases your risk of overdose and death.
Do Benzos damage your brain?
But when benzodiazepines are consumed for long periods of time, they can actually harm the brain. Taking benzodiazepines recreationally or in larger doses than prescribed can cause mental confusion, memory issues, permanent brain changes, and an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
The longer you take benzos the more your brain and body come to depend on them. When you stop taking the drug, it takes longer for your body to return to normal. For these reasons, protracted withdrawal symptoms can last up to 12 months or longer.
How long does benzo withdrawal fatigue last?
Acute withdrawal may last between two weeks and several months. Some people, around 10 percent according to a study published by ABC News, may experience protracted withdrawal syndrome that can extend several months or even years after stopping use of a benzodiazepine.
How can I reduce benzodiazepines? Benzo Tapering Guidelines & Schedule
These guidelines suggest an initial reduction of 25-30% for high dosage chronic users, followed by a 5-10% daily to weekly reduced dose. A 25% weekly reduction is recommended for individuals who normally take therapeutic doses at bedtime. In general, you want to slowly taper off medication by stepping the dose down gradually over weeks or months in order to minimize discontinuation symptoms and prevent the return of anxiety.
The safest way to kick a Xanax, Klonopin, or other benzo habit is through a medical detox program at a specialized treatment facility. Medical staff can use a slow medication taper to help the brain adjust to the lack of benzos, and the staff can provide follow-up rehab care to ensure that the sobriety gained in medical detox sticks for the rest of your life.
If a person wishes to stop taking a benzodiazepine, it should be done via medical detox at a specialized drug treatment facility where medical and mental health professionals are on hand to offer direct support and care. Following detox, intensive therapy and continued aftercare are needed to sustain long-term sobriety.
