Please do a video on equipment and techniques. I'm a layman and enjoy watching your videos but a lot of it is over my head. I was trying to figure out how your vacuum filtration works with the water. It would be interesting if you described the equipment and glassware you have and use.

Very satisfying to see such beautiful needle-like crystals form after the recrystallization. Quality over quantity sure pays off with such a cheap chemical. Keep posting videos!

Hi, I love your video. Is it possible to perform recrystallization with a mix of pure benzoic acid and barium chloride (both powders)?
@Prchemist063 жыл бұрын
No cuz both are very low soluble in water so it is very difficult to dissolve them If you want to make barium benzoate then, add barium carbonate to benzoic acid solution

Try dissolving that benzoic acid in acetone then hit it with the ketene lamp. Is it possible to create a mixed anhydride like that? What would that even make?

+MrCrazyChemist It's just a water aspirator. I bought it from Carolina Biological. I just routed the lab plumbing so it could be permanently installed.

Nice video, is it possible to do the same with potassium sorbate to form SORBIC ACID?
@chickenspaceprogram2 жыл бұрын
Probably, since potassium sorbate is far more soluble than sorbic acid. There would be a small loss, as sorbic acid is soluble at ~1.5 g/100ml @20C. What do you need sorbic acid for?
@stempelmarkttiel2 жыл бұрын
It is for use as a preservative in an Acidic cosmetic product and potassium sorbate is way cheaper than sorbic acid

Could you reduce bezoic acid to toluene, also could activated zinc dust successfully reduce benzoic acid to benzaldehyde?
@jaredgarden24559 жыл бұрын
+jared garden Ok turns out you could just reflux the benzoic acid in ether with LAH to benzyl alcohol then i suppose reduce the alcohol using activated zinc dust, but im still wondering if zinc could reduce a carboxylic acid to an aldehyde?
@mmmhorsesteaks9 жыл бұрын
+jared garden no. You could go to the chloride (from the alcohol) and reduce that with zinc. With a caroxylic acid, you would just get the zinc carboxylate salt.
@jaredgarden24559 жыл бұрын
+mmmhorsesteaks Thanx
@angeliawelch94388 жыл бұрын
+jared garden you can get toluene at a hardware store you have to order benzoic acid why would you want to buy something online wait for it to come then spend money turning it into something you could have just bought and distilled.
@jaredgarden24558 жыл бұрын
Angelia Welch Because then you actually get to perform an experiment and observe as your compound slowly changes into another compound, its the journey not the destination. not to mention what if one day the hardware store blows up or shuts down or toluene is taken out of hardware store paint thinner or if like the apocalypse happens and for some reason you want some toluene to recrystallize the sulfur that you dug up over in Rotarua to mix with some charcoal and that sodium nitrate that you managed to extract from that pile of fermenting straw you've been pissing on for the last 6 months to make gun powder which you can use in your makeshift pipe gun to finally kill those cannibals who have been trying to catch you and eat your legs for the past couple weeks.

how do you clean your frit? i tried a bunch of solvents on mine when it got contamned in a bromine extraction... nothing would get the red / brown out of it until i doused it with sulfuric acid followed by conc. h2o2. and then i threw some naOH in and left the room for a few hours while it ... reacted. that finally got it a really brilliant white again, but i hope it did not damage the frit in the process. I'd love to hear how it's supposd to be done.
@localbroadcast8 жыл бұрын
well, I did not have any thiosulfate on hand and the local grocery store was out of it at the time! jk, dont even kno what that is. I did try the usual suspects... acetone, alcohols, toluene, naptha, xylene, acetic acid..

In which solvent can you do a recrystallisation of copper carbonate ?
@shivambhatt27249 жыл бұрын
+Zock4 Copper carbonate is almost insoluble in all solvents (it can dissolve in acids, but it'll decompose, of course) so to purify it, just add in dilute hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid. it'll foam up and release carbon dioxide. add the acid until solution is clear and bubbling stops. Filter the resulting blue/greenish blue solution Add excessive amount of sodium carbonate solution to it. it will again precipitate faint green copper carbonate filter the precipitate and dry it there ya go, now you have a quite pure copper carbonate from crude/impure copper carbonate
