He rarely performed this song at concerts. Last year I saw him at one of them. He´s 81 years now. A huge stage and just he and his guitar. At the end of the concert he encouraged the audience to take out their mobile phones to record what was going to happen (he knew!). The very last song was "Über den Wolken". All 10.000 people sang along with tears in their eyes. It was amazing.

Hi D. It's Reinhard Mey and You did "Meine Söhne geb ich nicht" (that anti-war/military song). He is (one of) the best german singer-songwriter we still have. His career started in the late 60s/early 70s and this song is allready about 50 years old. He also has a private piloting license and flies a dobble-decker-plane.
@fipsvonfipsenstein6704
@fipsvonfipsenstein6704 Ай бұрын
He used to have a privat piloting license. For single and double engine planes, also as for helicopters. And "Über den Wolken" was only the first of many songs he wrote about flying. But he was born in 12/1942 - and he also knows that you shouldn't be flying an airplane at 81. He surrendered his pilot's license years ago or did not renew it. But the last time I saw him was on his motorcycle.

Reinhard Mey has been a passionate privat pilot himself, so this song was about his passion of flying, and as the poet he is, he combined all he did with a deeper meaning. I'm born in 1973 and my elder brother had the "single" vinyl of Reinhard Mey's "Über den Wolken". This song has always been with me from the beginning and it allways has been one if not the favourite song of my life, brings me to tears while listening now (haven't heard it for a long time). I will play it to my grandsong when I get him today. He's three yrs old and I think he could like it as well. Thank You for Your video^^

One of the best singer/songwriters of our time, well-known and popular not only in Germany but also in France at the time, under the name "Frederik". Reinhard Mey's songs are very different, from screamingly funny to deeply touching, very poetic lyrics, there is everything. He is also a very political person with an upright attitude, who often held up a mirror to us, even into old age. Valuable works of art that will always remain "modern", then and now.
@soundofnellody262

To us Reinhard Mey is what americans often call "a national treasure" . He is a very poetic singer/songwriter. My favourite is a funny song (from the 70s) about german overly exagerrated bureaucracy. Its called "Einen Antrag auf Erteilung eines Antragsformulars". Unfortunately I doubt there is a version with english translation. But the gist of it is that a guy desperately needs a form called "an application for the issue of an application form, to confirm the invalidity of the copy, the validity of which comes from the authority of reference, for the purpose of submission to the competent issuing office" (and yes, I used google translate for this because I couldn't do it myself) And of course none of the officers are responsible and they all send him somewhere else until he goes crazy and cries.. But the song has a happy end... 😁.. That sums up german bureaucracy from the 70s .. and it has not changed much until today 🤭

the best I can up with to describe Reinhard Mey is a "modern" bard, the lyrics of his songs can function even without music as poetry. He always draws very realistic pictures, playing with words and images like no other. Btw some of his songs are downright hilariously funny and again still very realistic but I am not sure if there is a translation of them and / or if the translation is good and the lyrics are what is important with his songs.

I think the lyrics are also about a change of perspective. When you leave the ground of everyday life and look at things from further away, from above, your worries suddenly seem smaller and less important. So he's saying: take a step back and look at the bigger picture and free yourself from everyday worries.

This song is not too modern but it’s a good one The song title reminded me of another German song by the rock band ‘Die toten Hosen (lit.transl. The dead trousers/pants)’. Their song is called ‘Unter den Wolken (Below the clouds). I’d love to see you react to the song. It doesn’t have English translations (only auto-translate but they don’t even get one word right) but there are translations if you google it. Here’s the link to the official music video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqjddXl8fZh2g80si=lvkXBULsuGDqPRe9 My translation of the song: Best wishes from down here To the daredevils up there We hold the fortress Still haven't dissappeared The world is just upside down The wind has changed A gray shadow is lying on our way Below the clouds Freedom is slowly getting difficult If we here and now - Are like benumbed Below the clouds There's no more clearance for take off For all our dreams All our dreams It's raining cats and dogs Soaked from top to toe We walk through a puddle Fuel sticking to our shoes And one or two sunbeams Are growing on their way From a small glimmer of hope Can evolve greatest light Below the clouds We still don't surrender freedom Because today It means all to us Below the clouds We make ourselves a sea of light From all the dreams From our dreams Below the clouds We still don't surrender freedom Because today It means all to us Below the clouds We make ourselves a sea of light From all the dreams From our dreams Below the lights Below the lights See how they shine! To call this modern is like saying 'Kung Fu Fighting' (same year as Über den Wolken) is a modern song.For example 'Snap - the Power', 'Lou Bega - Mambo No5', 'Scorpion - Rock Believer', 'Top Gun: Maverick' or 'Rammstein - Zeit' are from German musicians too and are much more modern..... Not sure what the word "modern" means in this context. The song is fifty years old. Today, the loud sound of a starting aircraft and leaking fuel on the ground would not be considered "romantic", but I do like the song nevertheless.
