Good points made in this video. To anyone who has this bike or is planning on buying one: the abrupt power delivery is the main issue you want to fix. Luckily, an over-abundance of power is a great problem to have. 14-52 or 51 gearing makes the power delivery way more linear and makes each gear much longer. The stock maps are ok but the magic and jl smooth maps are the only ones i would consider using on the stock ecu. An xpr vortex ecu is the ultimate in smooth but strong power delivery (keefers world vet mx map). Once you smoothen the power delivery you can fix the ergos if need be; you don’t have to be so over the front to offset the squat of the rear end when accelerating. Bar mounts in position 2 (back hole flipped forward). This chassis likes your body weight moved rearward, taller bars, bar mount spacers (17-19 450’s had taller mounts) and pegs moved rearward are common trends with these bikes (fastway, raptor or works connection all have offerings). I run a back 10 peg personally. Lastly the fork springs in stock form are too soft if you are fast or ride aggressively. This really is a fantastic platform, no need to be weary. Lastly while i believe the gearing and map changes to be a necessity, any ergonomic change will be personal preference for the rider.

I have 22 and i go back and forth with gearing a lot I like fairly low, but not the lowest accept for our most gnarly rides. I copied a bunch of maps. The most stall resistant one IMO is the "spunky feel with connection" map. I like 12/50 for most technical rides but like 12/52 for the one ride we do that you dont want stalling lol. Ill run 13/51 a lot too sometimes. The mx feeling map will bust the ass end loose almost no matter what you are doing. This bike is very easy to get the front end over obstacles. I did put a hydro magura clutch on it, love it. Gummy tires and tubliss.

I sold my yz 21 450 last year couldn’t get comfy. im a 6,1 250lbs fit /. Super fun to wheelie and lug around the track and just hit jumps - I couldn’t tame her to feel comfy around the track I was seat bouncing everything lol - and a buddy of mine suggested putting bar up in the mounts , pegs lower etc , and then ecu but didn’t …… I am hearing the 23 model is better for taller peeps….. I was either gonna get the 22-23 kx 450 or the new 23 yz …. I don’t race just love hitting jumps and wheelies and bush ! Allot of people are saying go with the kx it’s more cruise and easy to ride ….. but I wanna ride this new yz see what it’s about to … I kinda miss how aggressive it was because I’m heavier it worked well on the track all I’d have to do was just give it pepper before take off and would clear everything haha

Picked up the last available '21 yz450f in June of that year. It's set up for hard enduro and definitely needs to be dialed in for the rider and conditions. When I took delivery of it, the thing was a death trap. Completely unmanageable at slow speeds and first gear was useless. It'd either blow the tire off or stall. Understanding what the bike is doing, and making the changes and adjustments to correct the problems can take some time. I went whole hog on it from multiple directions and changed and adjusted soo many things I lost track. Definitely not advisable for a novice. Seat time is the only way I know to get a bike dialed. There's no such thing as a perfect bike until you build it.

I have a 2019 450fx and I agree it is a very strong bike and it pulls hard. Which is perfect in my wide open and faster sections of the hare and hounds. Or just faster sections in general. What I did to mellow it out for the tighter rock sections I ride in a lot is to set the mild tune that comes with the tuner app from Yamaha when you download it and second I changed my gearing on the rear sprocket to a 48 tooth. This helped make the lower gears a little longer and when you are in the mild tune it really made that bike settle down and much easier to ride and let the rear tire hook up. The bike is really an amazing bike and really makes it easy out in the desert or in the rock areas. The suspension in the stock setup with the lighter guys like myself. I’m 170 lbs myself and what I did was switch out my fork oil from stock which I think is a 5wt and I dropped to a 2.5wt and it worked out perfect. The front end is super smooth and plush.

The Yamaha team uses the wr and it is quick. It really all comes down to your ability and what you normally ride. If you ride a bunch of fire roads and do trail riding most of the time, the wr would be better. I race the expert class in national hare and hounds and desert racing so I need the extra bark that the fx has.

How do you think it would handle for a 6'3" 235lb rider with gear? Would I need to adjust the suspension? I've been looking into getting one because my KLX 300R is getting a little boring. I understand it's a whole different animal, but I'm a pretty good rider and have been on 450s alot, but you got me nervous for sure 😂

I've got a 23 450FX and she is a beast. As for the suspension, I did respring everything as I am a 260lb rider and I couldn't get my race sag to 100-105mm. After bumping up the springs it does feel a bit stiffer but good. Unlike the poster of the video, I actually brought my bars back to the closer spot on the triple clamp as I felt the bars were too far forward initially. I noticed at first I thought the bike was too twitchy but after 5-10 hours on it it's now totally smooth. My 15 year old son and my 13 year old love riding it too. It's a great bike!

@@ErnieScavinckyVideo awesome! I haven't pulled the trigger yet, but it really seems like a good fit for me. What type of springs did you go with?

@@lukef5370 I contacted Racetech and they got me what I needed. Changing the springs is an easy job to do.

Loaned it? Then still sell it as New?🤔
@BeRAD Жыл бұрын
That would be a wild assumption lol. They put it in their rental fleet then sell it as used end of season. “Loaned” means I don’t own it. By no means implies it’s a showroom bike that I’m just testing to be resold as new.

it almost sounds like you're talking about my 2022 drz400sm but that's after I finished a stage one upgrade haha. I'm sure even with all I've done to my bike that yz450 could still destroy me in a race xDy carburator is ripped off an old yz450! modified it instead of shelling out all that bread for an FCR

I am really confused why people always go for the FX bikes, I think the wr450 is a much better bike for most people, but it seems like no one has talked about the wr since 2008.
@BeRAD Жыл бұрын
There’s lots of good content on the WR’s. I decided on the FX for suspension and the fact that it doesn’t need any uncorking since this is a loaner bike. The WR’s are sooooo corked from factory. Sewing machines haha. Otherwise they’re essentially the same thing. I’ve ridden both enough to know. Not much difference. FX is a bit more stiff which made sense for my testing.
