We chose this curriculum for our daughter for her 7th grade year also, and your review made me so excited to use it! I love how it starts with atoms and builds all the way to biomes showing all the connections along the way. And you can’t beat the price on the lab kit- I’ve seen some lab kits that are twice as much for just a general science course. We are using Berean Builders with my high schooler as well, and she did very well with Biology. She also got to meet Dr. Jay Wile at our homeschool convention and it was one of her favorite memories of the convention. She sat through a couple of his workshops! I’m so thankful we found this curriculum. And thank you for your review!! New subscriber here.

I have been watching your videos for 3-4 years and really enjoy all your videos. You have some great insight, thank you! I was still deciding, but this review really filled in some of the gaps!

Our “Bob” was dubbed “Larry.” Same model. And I agree, he was one of the most useful resources for teaching anatomy last year and my kids still play with him half a year later.

Love that you named your anatomy guy, too! E made a 3D man in one of her science camps and we needed to name him. I told her about your comment and now his name is "Larry"!

Love the review! How long did a typical lesson take per day? Did you do science every day? I saw he recommended five days a week, spending two weeks on a lesson. Thank you!

Thank you! Yes, we did science every day (most weeks). There were times where we were only able to complete it 4 days a week, but, for the most part, we did science 5 days a week. The typical lesson took 20-50 minutes. I know that is a wide gap, but the experiments really cause the timing difference. There were times with the experiments where, after we did the experiment as described in the book, my daughter said, "I wonder what would happen if we...." so, we did it to see what would happen. :)

Hi Jen, thank you for taking your time and doing this review. What if the child doesn’t have much science exposure from before as it wasn’t sufficiently covered but is in middle school (7-8) would this curriculum still be okay to dive in?

I'm so glad that this review was helpful. If a child doesn't have much science exposure, then this could still be a doable course. However, I may plan on it taking a bit longer as time will be needed for reviewing some of the background for a few concepts as well as learning new terms. For example, my daughter had a fairly in-depth knowledge of the basic functions and parts of a cell prior to starting this class, so we were able to move through the section without needing to review organelles, cytoplasm, nucleus, membrane, etc. If she would have needed more review of those terms, then we would have needed to take longer to more fully comprehend the information provided in the textbook.

With your years of homeschooling experience and being an expert on supplemental material 😊what other courses would you recommend to fill in the background knowledge needed. I guess what I’m trying to ask where you would one start for a 7th grader with little to no background science knowledge. Which curriculum would you recommend?

Was this something she did on her own independently, or with you? We have this for next year and I’m not sure how best it will work 😅

We mostly did it together. She did the comprehension check questions and the review mostly on her own. We did the experiments together.
