Did you do the online program or just teach the lessons yourself? Also how do you like this program compared to dimensions math and Denison math? I’m currently using dimensions math 6b and have used it for my child since grade 1 but don’t plan on using it for grade 7 and 8 bc I’m not loving it the way we enjoyed the 1-5..
@HomeschoolwithJen6 күн бұрын
Great questions! I am just teaching the lessons myself. I use the "Home Help" videos when I think we need more explanation or something explained a different way. This is extremely different that Dimensions. You definitely will need to have a different mindset for BJU than you do for Dimensions.

Did you end up using the craft add-on from Biblioplan? I was debating between Biblioplan and MasterBooks. Price-wise, MasterBooks cannot be beat so I’m probably going to go with them. But did you feel the craft book was helpful or necessary? Could those activities be done without it? How many crafts did you actually do? Sorry for the onslaught of questions lol! I just want to how it worked out for your family to decide if we should add it or not.
@HomeschoolwithJen6 күн бұрын
LOL! I absolutely understand the questions. Bottom line: no, the craft book was not worth it since we were using it as an add on. Many of the crafts could easily be found with a quick search on the internet for "fun crafts about....." I think we only did 3-4 the entire year.

We have done Singapore dimensions from 1b to 5b when we started dimensions 6 I had a hard time adjusting to the new format and I felt like we were relearning things from 5?just in a different format. Now we are ready for 6b and I’m looking for something else.. I just don’t know what to do. I’ve looked into Mr Denison’s math it looks great but I wonder if it’ll be too slow paced for my kiddo, I’ve looked at math u see, and even masterbooks… i thought we would stick with dimensions through the entire program.. now I feel stuck 😢

I am a first year homeschool mom. I have a 5th grader who has gone to public school all his life and he has just soared in homeschool mainly bc I believe I let him be involved in curriculum choices. I’m starting to notice the gaps in his education are due to public only teaching to state tests requirements, which means he doesn’t always know the “why” is he doing something. Is 5th grade too late to introduce Singapore math? We are currently using IXL with the App and spectrum. I’ve tailored the lesson plans to blend into each other

What history did you use for 3rd grade and alongside this? I’ve tried Tuttle twins American history Story of the world And both were way too much information in my opinion for this young age. I feel like we will have to circle back to it anyway when I’m older grades. I just want to find something fun and short/simple.

If your daughter still misses AoPS, check out Alcumus! It's a free way to do some AoPS-style challenge problems on the side, and having the experience of going through BJU prealgebra/algebra 1 will keep her confidence from taking a hit since she would know the AoPS problems aren't normal, and that they're meant to be a struggle for students like her who are good at math

How teacher intensive is this curriculum?

It really isn’t very teacher intensive. The chapter is read in 2 days, then there are worksheets the student does, and optional projects. A student can definitely complete this curriculum fairly independently

Love the review! How long did a typical lesson take per day? Did you do science every day? I saw he recommended five days a week, spending two weeks on a lesson. Thank you!
@HomeschoolwithJen4 ай бұрын
Thank you! Yes, we did science every day (most weeks). There were times where we were only able to complete it 4 days a week, but, for the most part, we did science 5 days a week. The typical lesson took 20-50 minutes. I know that is a wide gap, but the experiments really cause the timing difference. There were times with the experiments where, after we did the experiment as described in the book, my daughter said, "I wonder what would happen if we...." so, we did it to see what would happen. :)

My son too is going into 7th grade. I spent so much time this summer researching math programs! Oh my goodness, there are SOOO many out there! I finally decided on BJU Press Algebra 1. I agree, one of the winning aspects for me, was the use of and teaching of the scientific calculator that I think many programs do not include. Unfortunately, as of January of this year, the company has updated their Algebra 1. So I ended up purchasing the "outdated" version, but I still am excited about it! Thanks for this review. I haven't seen many for BJU Press upper level math. I take it, you're not continuing with it? What are you moving to for Algebra 1?

Love your choices! Thanks for sharing, Jen. Question, how do you accommodate/ organize the schedule in order to work and complete all of your daughter’s curricula for this year? Does she works a little bit on everything daily? I’m still struggling on how to organize our schedule for our homeschool.
@HomeschoolwithJen5 ай бұрын
Thank you! Great question regarding our schedule. I'm still working on it for this year and will share it when I decide and tweak (so probably a few weeks into the year). In the past, we've worked on the following daily: Bible, Grammar, Math, Science, Reading. Four days a week: History, Writing, Vocabulary. Three days a week: Geography, Spelling. Two days a week: Electives. Of course, this is a very general schedule as there were many weeks where we did history 5 days a week, Geography and Literature 4, and Electives 1. This coming year is going to be a change for us, though, as I can already tell that Bible, Writing, and Electives will take more time than before so I'm really brainstorming on the best way to proceed this year. In short, no, we don't do every subject every day, but we do most of them at least 4 days a week.
