Beretta A300 VS Remington 870 Carlson's Longbeard XR Choke Comparison

I recently purchased the Carlson Longbeard XR Turkey Chokes for my Beretta A300 Outlander and Remington 870 Magnum. I wanted to compare the two with the Ammuniton that I had on hand. I tested the two at 35 yards with a slight rest. This should simulate hunting conditions that I typically encounter. I tested the following ammo all in 3 inch Magnum. I will be testing these chokes more extensively in the near future. Leave a suggestion.
Remington Nitro Magnum #4
Winchester Super X #4 Turkey
Hevi-Steel "Hevi-Metal" #4

Like most turkey hunters, I started out with what I had (Remington 870 with a 28" barrel). It came with a modified choke. I believe a regular Carlson full choke (not an extended turkey choke) was my first investment. Adjustable Truglo fiber optic sights became my second investment. Eventually, I bought an Indian Creek Black Diamond Strike choke and started using Hevi-13 loads made by Remington, Winchester, or Hevi-shot. At one point, I invested in a Remington 870 Super Magnum turkey gun. In the end, I sold that gun. I hated the bulky Remington pistol grip stock, & shooting 3.5" turkey loads through a pump gun wasn't fun. After a year or two, I concluded that I preferred my 870 Express & 3" turkey loads more. The 28" barrel with an Indian Creek choke hanging off the end wasn't my favorite, however. Eventually, I found a good deal on a 21" ribbed barrel. I really like my current set up with fiber optic sights & IC choke, but my 870 has been my backup gun for a number of years now. I had won a Winchester SXP pump from a gun raffle. I sold that gun & my 870 Super Mag around the same time. I used that money to pickup a slightly used Browning Gold 10 with a 26" barrel. I added fiber optic sights, an Indian Creek choke, and been using 10 gauge Hevi-13 5 shot turkey loads for years. There are still days when I take my 870, but if I am doing a day sit in a blind the Gold 10 is with me. I honestly believe it kicks less than a 3" 12 gauge pump gun. As I switch over to TSS loads eventually, I may be using my 870 more & Gold 10 less. Both guns hammer birds! My 81 year old dad started turkey hunting about 7-8 years ago. He really likes his used Mossberg 835 with a Carlson turkey choke. He uses mostly Hevi-13 5 or 6 shot, but I will have him switch over to TSS loads eventually. I won't tell him what they cost, however. My cousin has an 835, with an Carlson turkey choke (great chokes for the money) too! Pattern-wise an 835 is really hard to beat. It was the first gun on the market to use 3.5" loads, but my dad took one 3.5" load shot & that was never happening again. The 835 kicks hard. It pattern 3" loads really well. Personally, I like the 870 better (less forearm stock rattle), but the 835 is a turkey killing machine. My dad is deer gun hunter first. He's terrible at estimating distances. Dropping Toms at 60 yards is not uncommon for him. My brother & I will range his shots after the fact & just chuckle at him. The back bored barrel of the 835 makes it a special turkey gun if you can live with the kick.

The best turkey loads I have shot through my Remington 870 with an Indian Creek Black Diamond Strike choke were the original Winchester Extend Range loads (5 shot was my favorite). They were like shooting Hevi-13 loads on steroids. They were $47 for a box of 10. Winchester actually cheapened these loads by making the newer Longbeards XR loads, which are basically copper plate lead pellets somewhat glued together. Longbeards loads pattern awesome, but they don't have the down range energy of the original Winchester Extended Range loads. Overall, I have felt the Winchester turkey loads have been superior to the Remington loads. I wouldn't use a Remington Nitro load unless I was desperate, but I know several swear by them. I still use Hevi-13 loads. But they have been discontinued recently, & I never cared for their Magnum Blend loads. So I will be changing to something else eventually. I may try the 3" Apex TSS 8 shot loads next, & use cheaper Winchester Double X loads as backup rounds.

Great info, I'm pretty lucky in the fact that I can usually be under 20 yards on the birds in my area. This past season I used some old Remington Nitro Mag #4 lead. They actually patterned well and dropped Tom in his tracks!

Thanks for posting this info on patterns with your A300 (I shoot the same gun)...I can say without a doubt that you need to test the 3" Long Beard ammo with these chokes...the patterns are so much better than the ammo you tested in my A300 and also my single 12 that I use with a Remington XR choke.

The Hevi-Metal turkey loads with the Bismuth (9.6) & Steel (7.8) mix is less dense than regular lead (11.3) loads. They may work, but it has to be one of the worst loads available for turkeys. Bismuth improves a load for waterfowl, but for turkeys steel & bismuth would not be my choice. There's a reason guys are killing turkeys with 20 gauges and .410 using TSS (18) loads. I've had awesome success with Hevi-13 loads (13) over the years. Hevi-Metal turkey would be a huge step backwards in down range performance. Chokes & loads are important. What shotgun you use is pretty irrelevant. Just pattern the best combination you can afford & make sure you know your point of aim.
@After5Outdoors
@After5Outdoors 2 жыл бұрын
I'd say there is a big relevance in shotguns, in my experience some like different loads than others. But that has been my experience. Most of my shots are within 20 yards. Yes point of aim is important
@driftlesshunter9200
@driftlesshunter9200 2 жыл бұрын
@@After5Outdoors Really! I find that quite interesting. I would take a good turkey choke on a cheap Mossberg 835 over a more expensive Benelli without a turkey choke any day. Then again, the 835 back bored barrels are known to make a difference in turkey patterns, but they kick like a mule, too. At 20 yards most any choke & load will work. If it's a tight choke at 20 yards you better aim or you will miss them.

Hevi-metal is steel & bismuth, which is less dense than lead. Most turkey hunters would conisider Hevi-Metal to be a crap load for turkeys. Loads like Hevi-13 and TSS that are heavier than lead, which makes them excellent turkey loads. Adding bismuth to a steel shot load for waterfowl is an improvement. Using bismuth & steel as a turkey load would be a huge down grade from lead. I am not saying Hevi-Metal won't kill turkeys, but I don't know of a worst turkey load as far as density. You can't deny the laws of physics. Mass and velocity kills turkeys. Hevi-Metal is a fast load. So it does give you that.

Here's what I would do, copy the receipt, email it and tell them the issue and the experience you've had with them. I guess I personally would say that I would make it known on social media and any other way you can how your experience with them was. I'd also go to the place of purchase and see if they can help you somehow too. Sorry your facing this
