Great video overall. As for ported vs non-ported...ported chokes are a marketing gimmick. Nothing more. I have both ported and non-ported Carlson Cremator chokes. Using the same 1301 and the same Federal lead shot (7.5 shot @ 1oz), there is no recoil reduction and no change in muzzle rise. The only difference I can see is that the non-ported tubes pattern better! The ported tubes are going back.
@RNC_GSP_19693 ай бұрын
Interesting. I'm thinking that you're not seeing a noticeable difference because the loads you're shooting is relatively light. Imo, you might notice more of a difference if you shoot 3" or 3.5" shells. However, I personally haven't tested this theory. Thanks for the information.
@nunyabusiness21273 ай бұрын
@@RNC_GSP_1969 That's a fair assessment. I choose the light loads for 3-gun not hunting.

Another channel did a 2 year long test of different chokes and even used the different chokes in different guns. What they found was ported chokes performed worse 100%, yes 100% of the time and provided no benefit to muzzle jump. Ever since I watched that video, I am scrapping Patternmaster Code Black Goose and will be 100% replacing it with a Muller choke. After seeing their research and scouring KZbin, there isn’t a choke that competes with the Mullers and that is saying a lot!

I always tend to fall back on Carlsons chokes. I've had a load of different brands: Patternmaster, Kicks, Trulock, Indian Creek, Briley, etc. For a specific type of shooting, it always seems Carlsons has a choke that does a little better than the other brands. Longbeard XR chokes: Carlsons Longbeard XR and Patternmaster Code Black are my two best, but the Carlsons conistently patterns more densely and evenly. Buckshot chokes: Carlsons BS, Trulock Deerstroyer, Kicks Buck Kicker, Patternmaster Big Game, but the Carlsons and the Trulock are the best in my guns with 00 and 000 shot. TSS: my Carlsons extended TSS chokes pattern as well as my Indian Creeks without getting all eaten up inside by the TSS shot, which tends to chew up the wad stripping rings and parallel section of the Indian Creek. If I had one brand to rely on, it would be Carlsons. Most have been very good. None have been poor. Carlsons seems to hit the sweet spot with their shooting-type-specific chokes more consistently than the others.

I enjoy your videos. I'm an avid trap, skeet and sporting clays shooter. Modern guns with choke tube sets present us with many options compared to the fixed choke days of my youth. This video is very good for lead shooters, but many "clay" target clubs across the USA and Europe are switching to "only" steel shot shells for environmental reasons. Would you consider producing another choke tube selection video for steel shot clay shooters? Regardless of manufacturer, we accept that a modified choke with steel shot equates to a full choke with lead shot. However, when we start shooting handicap yardages, that a "Modified (full)" choke that patterns great at 27, or 23 yardages may not be the best choke for 16 yd when something more open might give us a tad more forgiveness. We're always looking for an edge. I think you'd be a good guy to examine and recommend choke tube selections for steel target shot at various yardages. Steel shot choke tube patterns have been covered well for hunters, but little choke tube pattern comparison is available to us steel shot clay target shooters besides charts.

I usually run a light modified on my beretta a400 and browning with 28 inch barrel. I recently got an a400 with 30 inch barrel and noticed with a lm the pattern was barely larger than the clay at 35-40 yards and i had to switch to a improved cylinder to make a bigger pattern. Same for my browning with 32 inch barrels. I also had to switch from 7.5 loads to #8’s. In the world of sporting clays ive learned a lot of things go into play for pattern and leading a target.

For my 20 gauge Weatherby O/U I have a full set of 6 trulock chokes and absolutely love them. Great for upland and clays. On my Beretta A300 Ultima, I have a Patternmaster Code Black Duck I love to shoot but I have beretta factory extended chokes that I bought off their site. For IC and Mod and they absolutely crush. One of the best combos for ducks at basically any range is 9 shot TSS with the IC in a waterfowl load. However, slower shot with the Patternmaster is just a lethal combo.

My wife and I use Carlson cremators and patternmaster code blacks (Mobil, Optima+, and inventor+) some of the cremators are ported, some aren’t. The variance on patterns is +\- -4-5% depending on which load is being used. In our most commonly used ammo (score 3” 1 1/4oz #2 1550 fps) they’re within 2%. In the field there is absolutely zero noticeable difference, but hey, use whatever is good enough and gives you the confidence to hit with.

I own Benelli and Guerini shotguns and the factory choke tubes work pretty damn well. I’ve used aftermarket chokes for things like turkey hunting. Patternmaster is what use now. But you can use TSS with a Benelli full choke just fine at 45-50. I’ve done it. In CA we have to shoot steel or non toxic even at upland birds so I tend to use modified or less for that because steel patterns tighter generally. Honestly upland #7 steel with an IC Benelli choke shoots tight enough that a few doves have come down literally without heads…I haven’t identified any aftermarket chokes what would do better. I use #6 upland steel for quail with an IC factory choke and it flattens them, even in 20 gauge. I’ve found extended chokes come loose faster and more easily. So you have to check them every several rounds.

Loved your video Steve. Would like to see you address the topic of barrel length someday. It's almost as bewildering as choke tubes. why are there ranges from 26" to 32"? Benefits and disadvantages of each for different purposes (skeet / trap) and different game birds? Example, if shooting geese consistently at 40 yards+ are you better with a longer barrel? Same with trap? And the combination affects of choke tubes with different barrel lengths... Should I not be concerned with barrel length?

Muller chokes mfr for your actual gun, shotguns have different bore measurements, not one size fits all, like most choke manufacturers produce. Get a choke that is made for your particular shotgun, and Pattern your gun, so important. Also, Muller has a 60 day money back guarantee, no matter how many rounds you've ran through it, they will even swap it out, to see if a different model works better for your gun !!

In my experience... ported choke doesn't pattern as well as unported chokes. Extended chokes make very little difference. With today's technology in shotgun wads... this is where the real differences are. People also tend to use to tight of a constriction on their shotguns. People routinely over estimate how far their target is.
