I never could understand why Beretta chooses not to put decently figured wood on their Silver Pigeon I. Many novice shotgun shooters go into a gun shop not really knowing what they want or what really fits/feels good to them. The gun shop employee lays a Silver Pigeon and a Browning down on the counter. Both great guns, but I'd wager than many times the prospective buyer will look at the Browning's decently figured wood and either consciously or subconsciously be attracted to the Browning. I guess maybe Beretta hopes that the buyer will elevate to a Silver Pigeon III with nice wood, pay a lot more money and walk away with essentially a Silver Pigeon I with a nicer stock. I don't know but I've never seen a SP I with wood that didn't look like it might have come out of the waste wood pile at a construction site. Strong? You bet. Pretty? Uuhhg!

I think the wood finish opinion on a SP1 is all subjective and in the eye of the beholder. I bought a SP III 687 (12ga) six months ago and it does look beautiful. So this morning I went to buy another one (20ga) and decided to get the 686 SP1 instead. Not that I can’t afford another 687, but because I figured I don’t need a perfectly working hunting gun to be adorned with finer wood, lipstick and bling-bling. I found the wood on a SP1 to be very nice and figured that I didn’t need to buy another more expensive SP III for a gun that is going to get worked extremely hard. Both guns are used for upland game hunting in the chaparral of Texas, Arizona and California deserts and mountains. After I bought the nicer finished 687, I thought “why?” It’s not a coffee table piece, it’s a hard working hunting tool.

I love the wood on my silver pigeon one. I actually was going to buy a silver pigeon three, and fell in love with the simplicity, yet beauty of the wood on a silver pigeon one. While it’s not exotically striped, it’s very rich.

...I've got the Classic, 30" 12g. Beautiful wood but the balance was way out. I needed 9oz of lead to get it over the hinge. Victory extended 3/8's chokes have made it the perfect sporter....

Are the barrel steel Proof an is it a standard poof on magnum poof I'm try to find out I just got a 686 this year an shoot sporting clay an upland I would like to give waterfowl a try an can't get a good answer on if I can shoot steel 3 inch waterfowl load out of the gun

The newer 686 sp1 are superior steel proofed.

That is not the new sp1 it’s pre 2019 different barrels different fore end different action engraving and you have aftermarket chokes in yours

This sounds like something coming from a Browning owner. The Beretta Silver Pigeon has proven for over thirty years that it is one of the best, if not THE best over/under shotgun in its price range. If it rusting, try wiping it off after using in the rain and keep it oiled. To say it rusts if treated/maintained like any gun must be is just plain ignorant or a troll.
