Les Paul was friends with all the big names in guitar when he made his solid body guitar, in fact he showed it to Gibson they denied him, he showed it to fender and he made the first solid body lap string guitar befor les had his solid body guitar out on the market.

I've been watching a bunch of these. Brings me more pleasure seeing Les interacting with his guests and joking around than I can say. Joe was one of the very few I've seen so far that was able to do his thing and meld it with something that includes Les's playing. I don't understand the negative comments? Maybe they don't know who Les is? Seeing him having a great life into his golden years brings tears to my eyes. What a treasure and gift to the world he was.

The clarity and feeling of Les' single note lines are so sweet. Joe's sustain made Summertime shimmer. Yet another special version of it. Amazing how Summertime is amenable to so many different renditions.

As I watched this I just had to imagine that all of Joe's effects and various stomp boxes were invented back in the 40's and 50's. It was fun watching these two guys make a great musical connection. It certainly looked like Les was enjoying watching his legacy of musical instrumental creativity come out of Satch's fingers. Great video, really enjoyed it!
@willrichtor2 жыл бұрын
I don't know how he sets up now but Joe used to run with minimal pedals, letting an eventide harmonizer do the bulk of the processing of his tone since it could emulate pretty much any pedal or effect created up to the point of its introduction without having to worry about level/gain stacking like when you run multiple pedals. I read him say one time that there was even a setting to emulate a dying battery in a pedal. Pretty sure his old floor setup used to be the controller/ trigger for the eventide, a vox wah, a DS1 and not much else. Of course he's a pedal addict so no telling how long he rolled that way but I'm sure it helped out in live situations, considering the amount of processing needed for that tone.

@ronvonryan4 жыл бұрын
@@highatruthart Great guitar, but to my mind the best looking guitar ever is the Fender Strat', as a young English lad back in the 1950's I remember seeing an album cover with Buddy and his Strat', and thinking 'what is that'???, it looked to me like something that just flew in from outer space!! As an old man now I still play a Strat' and still think not only is it a great looking guitar but it's so comfortable to play!! I had a Les Paul once, great guitar, great sound, but not in my opinion the most comfortable guitar to have hanging round your neck on a long Gig.
@sohailmaqbool69004 жыл бұрын
@@ronvonryan i agree that les paul guitar is heavy. But strat is not THAT comfortable to play, i always hit that toggle switch while playing, its placement is very uncomfortable, thats my personal opinion
@ronvonryan4 жыл бұрын
@@sohailmaqbool6900 Actually the Strat' was designed for comfort, I love a Tele' but the top edge is uncomfortable for your arm, that's why Leo made the Strat' with that part of the top carved away, also if like me you have a 'beer gut' the back of the guitar fit's nicely round it. I know what you mean about the toggle switch, but it's like the old joke when a man goes to the Doctor and says 'it hurts when I lift my arm like this', and the Doctor says 'well my advice is don't move your arm like that'!! I have been playing a Strat' for more years than I wish to remember, and never had trouble hitting the toggle switch, I tend to use the second position all the time, neck and middle pick-ups, and have never hit it once while playing.

Joe Satriani is to electric guitar what Segovia was to classical, so to see him not only starstruck but nervous, shy and intimidated by THE PROGENITOR of the instrument is priceless. You can tell he just wanted to roll his tone knob all the way off and just play some tasteful rhythm and watch Les do his thing but Les wanted to see a show. Amazing what Les could do with just a few notes, considering he was NEVER a minimalist player, except maybe when compared to Chet.

Les Paul apparently had an arm deformity. Clearly, it never deterred him, as it doesn't me.

I'm seeing a lot of comments about Joe being 'respectful'. Which I think is true, given that he generally comes across as genuine and humble person. But to be honest, I think his attention was also divided between partly trying to tame his usually beastlike sound (comparably) within such a setting, and partly being (justifiably) terrified of being around a living legend. It may just be me, but I can hear nerves in his playing that blues. There's not a lot of places to hide there compared to his own, thickly distorted, familiar music and band. And Les Paul was an absolute monster on his instrument back in the day, and he's seen and heard dozens of world-class players.
