I've seen Mr. How several times over the years. He always hits a few bad notes during the shows. Then again, he's playing ninety million notes per second on EVERY SINGLE SONG and even did double sets when Yes toured with Asia, playing for like 3-1/2 hours straight. He's a freak of nature. Good observation. I was teaching in the 70's and some of my students wanted to learn Steve Howe licks. I told them that I couldn't really pin him down to some licks, but we'd write out (some) of his parts and then see how they related to the musical structure of the song. (As much a lesson for me as for them.) At that time I could play Mood for a Day, but I couldn't do the Chet Atkins style required for Clap.

First of all, thanks for liking this page. Few guitarists could cover this stuff - never mind guitarists that have developed world-class reputations as Howe has. This music style is actually his child-hood music and he caries it off immaculately well. With respect to "Close to the Edge" if you listen to Yesshows live version I have always believed that Howe's guitar is semi-improvised and is one of the most powerful song introductions ever. I would seriously put it with Beethoven's 5th, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Oldfield's Tubular Bells.

What a reminder of Steve's thorough grounding in various American styles of music and guitar playing. They inspired him right from the start. Listen to his first two solo albums "Beginnings" and "The Steve Howe Album" and then early Yes' ten minute version of Simon & Garfunkel's America. He is a wizard, always making the guitar serve musical composition in his playing and soloing, instead of the other way around, as too many guitarists eager to show off their technique do.

@ascending19654 жыл бұрын
@@hughmoss9884 If only there was away to put some soul into him, would be far more accurate. When you have musicians composing songs with the main aim to show off their virtuosity then they have no soul. Comparisons with Beck are plainly ridiculous, he never did an Asia or GTR or produced the dross that Howe was involved with. It is well documented that this is the music he grew up with along with the music of Atkins and that comes across on this performance because he is clearly enjoying himself. Very good guitarist, but not particularly an important one and one that lives off of the reputation from his early years.
@glynnp424 жыл бұрын
@@ascending1965 Oh, I completely disagree. The thing that made him amazing was the lack of soul. Or blues playing, as I'm sure you would say. His approach was more classical. That's what sets him apart from a Clapton, et. al. THAT'S what I find interesting in his composing/playing. It doesn't have to be all bendy, bendy, bendy soulful stuff. The technical creativity is FASCINATING. Yours Is No Disgrace, Starship Trooper, South Side of the Sky, all incredibly different ways of approaching rock music. Never been done before. Or since. Sometimes you don't need soul. Sometimes you don't need to be able to dance to it. Like bebop. Just need ears and a brain. Thanks for listening.

There's far more to Steve Howe than what he plays with Yes!
@edlaw51501 Жыл бұрын
Who remembers early YES photos of a young Steve Howe playing a Gibson es-175 or Birdland that looked like he was wrestling the guitar as it was almost bigger than him, he was fuc**** phenomenal back then, such a versitle guitarist, Look at all his material Yes, Asia, GTR etc. Great great player. And not to forget Les was the god before we had guitar gods, Les and Edward Van Halen were good friends it would have been something to see them play together !

He's pretty good. Maybe he should play professionally... Kidding aside, Howe is amazing. He does Classical, Jazz, Blues and Progressive Rock, all with Mastery. Ridiculously good and underrated.

they are two very diff guitarists, Rabin and Howe. I wouldn’t dis either as they are both super accomplished. Hard to say an apple is better than an orange. I like both for their contribution to Yes as a whole. At the end of the day Steve is my hero, and Rabin is a great inspiration.
@robb10385 жыл бұрын
But you play a Rabin solo once and you are bored with it. He is skilled, great writer/producer, no doubt. Howe's work however engages your complete concentration and lights up your brain like a pinball machine on Tilt...
@matthewblack72065 жыл бұрын
Not as good as Howe - but still very good. Both are amazing composers. Rabin arguably plays rock better and sings better than Howe, but that's about it. Yes has had no shit guitar players, ever.

This is easily the best of all these "Les Paul with so and so" videos that I've seen... If you couldn't tell before, you can certainly tell now just how large of an influence Les Paul was on Steve Howe... ! Unbelievable chemistry on display here.

I have to leave one more comment. I always loved Steve's playing in the band, but I didn't know that he can play ANYTHING in any style. Right now, when I talk about the guitar masters, I MUST mention this man. He's one of the world's best. 👍

This is what happens when you start playing guitar at 4 years old as my old friend Jimmy Manley could play anything by Steve Howe, Jimmy Page, and many other greats by the time he was 13 years old. Rock on Jimmy

And yet all the music media hacks do is fawn all over Jimi, Jimi, JIMI as if there has never been nor will there EVER BE, anyone higher. Steve Howe IS and always will be ‘The Maestro.’
@skierpage6 жыл бұрын
There can't be anyone "higher". Jimi took the electric guitar further than anyone else has, every electric guitarist is playing in his footsteps. That's not to say there can't be "better" guitarists. John Mayer plays "Wait Until Tomorrow" "better" than Jimi, and I think Steve could outplay Jimi on pedal steel, classical, dobro, flamenco, ... ;-)
