IN THIS VIDEO I TAILOR MY S90 BERGEN WITH A FLOATING LID MODIFICATION, POSSIBLY THE BEST MOD YOU CAN DO....
Check out our Amazon survival shop here
www.amazon.co....
This modification really extends the load range, and balances the carriage far more than its original format. Any former discomfort carrying the sleep system inside the pack, has been totally eradicated and increased the internal pack space for other pieces of kit......bexbugoutsurvivor

Just done my lid mod and it struck me that the detached lid is a handy grab sized bag, I've got wets in the pocket at the moment but I think a tarp, spaceblanket, folding water bottle and firekit will be its new inhabitants, carried by the straps it doubles as a forage bag for smaller fire fuel. Need to finish some sewing and I'll put a vid up of it. 👍

i modded one of my packs the same way, was surprised how easy it was to do, and i was happy with the results, ... i also added compression straps across the main compartment which helps hold things in place.

The floating lid has to be the most effective of all modifications imo. Better weight distribution and more comfy ergonomic use of space. I no longer keep the maggot in a compression sack as seen in this video, but now just roll it up inside the bivvy bag, pop it on top of the snow collar and gone. Probably quicker than loose feeding it into the main chamber....bex

My machining skills are not so good...lol As you will see in a few up coming videos. I only started learning once I left school. That includes learning languages, rethinking math, and google spell check as shown me how many words I have been misspelling for decades...lol No bad students, just bad teaching methods imo....bex

Hello Bex and this video was very interesting and thanks for showing us how to do it. And is they any modification to the army bergan belt, that can be done ?

I did a quick tips some time ago to add a hippo pad to the bergen. But if you use the belt as a kidney pad rather than a hip belt, the load carries much better. There is a vid on this topic coming up soonish...(Padded bergen belt) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hX3QdqmIqbxsr9U

I was looking at my NI day sack and thinking of doing a floating lid mod but the way the lid is build into pack has me scratching my head, what do you reckon Bex ? Cheers for these modding videos, I’ve learnt how to use an awl thanks to you and added a monocular pouch to my webbing so far.
@bexbugoutsurvivor

The design of the NI sack doesn't lend its self very well to the floating lid option at all, without some serious re-build. I opted for stowing my sleeping bag in a dry sack/compression bag, and bungee it to the outer top instead. You could also awl on webbing straps and quick release clips, instead of using bungees....bex

@@bexbugoutsurvivor I’ve got this idea in my head of making a ‘mini bergen’ out of my day sack. I managed to do an overnighter with just webbing and day sack but it was a really squeeze with just a minimi pouch as extra space. I may skip the floating lid idea, I’ll have a closer look at the pack. But I am doing to slice up a double ammo pouch and sew them either side of the minimi pouch. Cheers bex

Here's a link to how I use my NI pack, yet carry ALL the contents of my 120 litre Bergen. Often keeping it simple works the best. Hope it is of some value for you. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYO8daJpf7yja9E

@@bexbugoutsurvivor thanks for the link Bex. I love my current issue dos bag but it’s still so bulky. I might look into a down bag, its the trickiest part of the mini bergen idea

Very interesting mods there. I'm really happy with my dpm bergen exept for the shoulder straps as the padding is quite flat and not as comfy as it could be. Do you think it would be a difficult job to replace the padding and what type of foam would be best. Have you any idea how much it would cost to have it replaced by a professional and the name of any, I've heard of jay jays. Thanks. Rob.

I had Jay Jays do my shoulder straps on one of my bergens, which cost around £45...ish If you carry your bergen with the hip pad/kidney pad ABOVE your illiac crest (hip bone) rather than wrapped around it like a rucksack, with the buckle sat on your belly button, the load is carried with ease. There should only be about 30% of the weight of the load on your shoulders.....bex

@@bexbugoutsurvivor thanks. Yes i have it in that position as its a short back , just thought it'd be better with new padding for long distance hill camping but don't want to pay that much so I'll live with it how it is. Thanks again. Rob.

Hello Bex, amazing job, incredible patience, and you must have a very strong core to support your spine. You also need a clear mind and peace and quiet to achieve all that intricate work. I can barely do my laces up ! All the best, Richard.

I too was once inpatient, and in the wrong mind set too. (Will have to do a vid on that) Now I just do these tasks as a watch TV, and use it as meditation, without giving my self dead lines. All the best Richard...bex

If you know what you're doing, it provably helps. If you need a heavy duty YKK brass zip l have some dead stock unused you can have, they're wasted on me . I've had them for years. All the best.
