The extension at the top of the turn works but and is good to know as are all skiing moves, however the most modern technique involves starting the turn from a flexed position and simply rolling the feet and and ankles to release the edges.
@JB91710
@JB91710 2 жыл бұрын
Yep! You are a great Follower, but Thinking is something you lack. "Flexed Position" doesn't TEACH people to do anything. Put your boots on and try to roll your feet and ankles over. If you focus on just that, you will end up standing on the ins9ide foot every time. The exact opposite of what you should be doing.

My good another counter rotating video. When carving upper body rotation is forbidden !!. It is as simple as that. No wonder some people find it hard learn with all these crazy postures. I even saw a instructor doing hockey stop through the whole turn. LOL Carving is about letting the skis do the work, follow your skis at all time.

From my own experience, learning non-carving parallel turns before carving is counter productive as it is difficult to get rid of parallel turns habits when learning carving. I watched dosens of videos , took couple of on-slope lessons and still could not understand how to get a clean carving. Until I watch a video on ski physics-mechanics. I suddenly realised that I should not try to make a turn! All I need is to angulate the skis and the clean carving turn will result as a by-product. Moreover, the carving turn gets even cleaner if I tried to go streight! So the key is to get maximum ski angulation while maintaining the balance. And when U try to do this, all those professional skiers postures come out natuarally.

I have a bit of a problem with his upper body movement once he switches to the new outside ski. The new outside ski hasn't come around downhill yet though early edging is occurring but his upper body is turning uphill. This goes a little against a quiet upper body that should be on the whole pointing downhill. Sure his body points downhill once he is well into the turn but to almost twist it uphill at the initiation is quite incorrect.

Whatever the theorists say, and there appears to be plenty of ideas, this skier looks to have it all. I'd give a right arm to ski like that. Lito Flores and Harald Harb both talk about phantom edging which begins with the ankle. Lito used to say that one legged skiing wasn't an option, but a MUST. Maybe that was before the modern carve took over.
@GeroLubovnik
@GeroLubovnik 9 жыл бұрын
What is important to understand about phantom edging is that its purpose is the create torque that transfers across the pelvic girdle (the pelvis/hips, whatever you want to call it) to the outside leg and down the to foot. As you may know, the ability to create torqure requires an opposing force. The phantom foot provides that. Where HH and I part company is that I think it is more powerful to keep both skis on the snow, allow pressure to build naturally (created by turn shape, momentum and centipetal force) and keeping your body tracking in the proper lateral position to the skis. This eliminates the needs for over-active upper body countering as it is all done from the hip sockets down. The body can then passively face downhill and be projected downhill as well creating additional opposing force at the hips. I know my response is a little complicated, but just go with the phantom foot concept for now and try it without lifting the inside ski off the snow. Everything should fall into place.

@JB91710

In the simplest of terms, carving is when you put your upper body back in the fall line as you change your weight from your turning ski to your uphill ski to start the next turn. Think of a bungy cord connected from the top of the hill to the bottom. The cord goes through your chest and you are sliding down it. When you want to make sliding turns, the cord is not tight so your upper body can move to the sides with the skis so you are on top of them and your skis are flatter thus they slide. When you want to make carved turns, the cord is tight. When your skis are making turns from side to side, your upper body has a hard time pulling the cord to the side and that makes the pressure build up in your weighted leg. When you want to start the next turn, you get off the downhill foot and step onto the uphill foot. That turning ski is no longer resisting the pull of the cord and you let it pull you back into the fall line. That movement along with the skis going to the side, puts your legs over at a steep angle and the skis quickly switch edges. 3:00 As his ski make a turn to the left, his chest is pulling that cord to the left also. When he wants to make the next turn, he gets off his right foot and puts his upper body back into the fall line while his skis continue to cross the hill. That makes the legs change angle to the other side and the ski change edges and turn. You can also see it happening at 0:03. As the skis point across the hill, he gets off his left foot and stops his body from going with the skis and puts it back in the fall line. You can also think of it this way. 1. Plant your Right pole down the hill. 2. Take your weight off your Right foot. 3. Lift your right check and set it on the edge of the Right barstool. As your feet go side to side with your skis, you keep your upper body in the fall line and quickly change your weight as you feet pass below you like you are standing on the pedals of a bicycle and pedaling fast. Go to any Reilly video to see a really good demonstration of what I mean.

You say that you rotate your upper body in the opposite direction of the skis. If you do this you will incline and put weight on your inside ski and you will not be able to carve the ski correctly. The way you get your body to be in the opposite direction of your ski, is to turn with your legs to create the separation between the upper and lower body. At no point do you rotate the body.

This is not completely right. In the video they say that you have to rotate your body in the opposite direction, but the demonstrator is doing that way to extreme, your mountain shoulder only has to be slightly ahead of your downhill shoulder, to still keep enough pressure on your downhill ski you have to have angulation (your hips go towards the mountain while your upper body goes away from the maintain, sideways). Also, there should only be a fore- inwards motion, so there is no going up.

@GeroLubovnik
@GeroLubovnik 10 жыл бұрын
You must be watching a different video than this one. The skier does not have any "hip rotation". His hips are stable and the femurs are clearly rotating in the hip sockets. How do you think he gets that much angulation? I have other issues with this video, but it is mostly in the EXPLANATION.
@bakshishdwauw7963
@bakshishdwauw7963 10 жыл бұрын
GeroLubovnik so??if the femurs are rotating in the hips?!? the hips itselfs rotate?? LOL angulation is a movement of all the segment hips/knees/ankles…i dunno if u are a professional ski teacher/instructor or a ski passionate, anyways his hips are rotated man! LOL btw thats clearly caused by the slow speed and the little steep of the slopes...
@GeroLubovnik
@GeroLubovnik 10 жыл бұрын
Bakshish dWaUw Sorry Bakshish. You are seeing it or describing it incorrectly. The hips are required to be stable (at least as stable as can be) to provide that power which the femurs rotate against (for both guiding and edging). Torque is created by opposing forces. If his hips turn IN THE DIRECTION OF THE TURN too much he loses both angulation and power. Both angulation and power are clearly present in his demonstration which proves the point. What creates the stability is the INSIDE SKI turning in the direction of the turn, which causes the torque to travel across the pelvic girdle to the outside leg. Either you're mixing up your terminology for hip rotation or you're clearly not seeing it.
@GeroLubovnik
@GeroLubovnik 10 жыл бұрын
Bakshish dWaUw One more thing... On longer turns the hips will follow a bit more than on shorter turns. This is only natural. It does not mean that his hips are rotating as he is generating loads of torque.
@bakshishdwauw7963
@bakshishdwauw7963 10 жыл бұрын
GeroLubovnik ur physic explanation is absolutely good and correct…still practice is something else :P don't understand why u talk about internal ski etc. its absolutely correct what u say…still i don't see the connection with why i said…there's quite some hips rotation, in the second comment i specify that is 100% coz of the low speed n not so steep slope. I also add, which i thought was not needed to say, that is a consequence also of the fact that is a demonstration where this skier is trying to amplify certain movements (as angulation). sorry man, again dunno if u study it in professional terms or coz is a passion of urs, would be quite important to continue this exchange of opinions.

The information is kind of wrong...See, if you apply pressure on both skis more friction happens and you dont gain speed.Its right too put more pressure on the outside ski unlessthe turn is really sharp.But on a piste that is almost useless.Im the first rated 16 yo skier in Slovenia and 5th in Europe and I use that principle...It works well for me
@gx1400sc
@gx1400sc 4 жыл бұрын
if you want to carve in high speed and use the rebound of the ski and skiboot. You really have to build up energi at the outher ski. Your innerski leg is shortened (knee up, waist bend etc) because of the high g-forces, therefore it is impossible to create equal downforce att both skis. BUT if you want to carve at slow speed this method may work .

Isn't it a mistake to push your "body forwards and upwards" when transitioning from one turn to the next. Shouldn't he be trying to NOT raise his upper body. To do this, you pull your feet up, not push them down. You bend your knees and hips to accomplish this. By straightening his knees and hips, he's causing unnecessary and unwanted vertical movement of his upper body, and using a technique that will get him airborne in the moguls.

Your front mustn't be in the direction of the hill. It has to follow the skiis. :)

True, but that depends also where you are from, there are some differences between countries in terms of tehnique. In other words, most of the demonstrators and skiing teachers have the same tehnique with a small amount of variations. For example South Korea doesn't give so much attention to movement in general where otherwise Croatia tends to basically be perfect in movements and overcome all of the forces and make them make us faster and more stable. The point is that movement can be different but again, not every position is great for that moment. This one in particular can be better.

I watched Sebastien's video. And yes, you're right he is a wonderful skier. I personally ski more like Sebatien than the other dude. FWIW, I've been teaching skiing for over 20 years, I am PSIA Level III certified, been a racer, race coach, pace setter, and actually have my own teaching system, so I have a pretty good idea of what goes into skiing. There are a couple distinct differences between the two skiers, but more similarities than differences.Sebastien skies similarly to Harald Harb, except Harald is 64 years old, so I think is quite exceptional. To teach pure carving you aren't going to do it with short radius carved dynamic turns as Sebastien is demonstrating. You have to learn to engage the edge. What sets Sebastien apart in his demonstrations is how he manages the energy coming out of the skis and how he initiates by retraction rather than extension (as I mentioned in my direct critique). What I really enjoyed about Sebatien's turns, which I am a HUGE proponent is how he uses his inside ski. I do the identical thing. That move, btw is what saved Mikaela Shifrin in the Olympic Women's slalom when she bobbled on that one turn. So, to recap the original vid here under discussion.... The skier isn't bad. He is demonstrating how to get into pure edged turns. As noted, I have some technical issues, but mostly with the verbal description more than the demonstration. Thanks for the opportunity to discuss this.
