this is one of the best documentary films about a city that i have ever seen. the fact this video has only about 52,000 views is a shame.

Andrew, you did SUCH a fine job on this documentary. No frills, no attempt to sensationalize; this must be the most comprehensive one-hour view of the history of Berlin. You DO care about getting historical facts right and presenting them clearly.

I was stationed in Berlin from 1-1-70 to 6-3-72 in the US Army at Lichterfelde Barracks. Just about everything I was familiar with in the city is now gone, including the places I worked. I haven't been back, since the whole place would be a mystery to me now. It is very interesting to think about all the changes that have taken place and to wonder what the future holds for Berlin. I wish the city and its people nothing but the best.

As a berlin-resident in third generation, i must say, that this video is amazing. First, I'm reallly thrilled by your profound knowledge, even about little sidenotes and not very common knowledge, with which you were able to teach even me some new facts. :) Also i really enjoyed your well chosen intonation and your choice of music, espacially when handling the darker times of berlin, so that I had a feeling of you respecting the tragic, that occured to so many people. Last but not least, I really liked, that you didn't just show the typical tourist-hotspots, but also some of everyday-berlin. Thank you very very much for your effort. :)

This is by far one of the most incredible historical documentaries of German history I have ever seen. So well produced, so many wonderful visuals. You have really outdone yourself on this one more than most of your other KZbin videos. Did this get aired on some television network? I assume you had help producing this from some other professionals, I might have missed that in the credits. What a great way to see Berlin and so much of the histlory about 21 years since I was last there.

Thank you so much for researching, filming, editing and posting this video. It is the closest I will ever get to Berlin. Your video is excellent. As a Canadian, I have always lived in peace and security free from bombs, walls and danger. The people of Berlin have lived through destruction and turmoil. It is a pleasure to see them living in freedom.

Absolutely brilliant film. Well done. My first visit was with the wall still in existance. We had lunch in the Righstag building with the Mayor of West Berlin. He was asked if he thought the wall would ever come down, and his reply was "yes, but not in my lifetime". A few months later it was gone. Having experienced it with the wall (including the S-bahn to Fronau that effectively ran "on top.of" the wall) I had to go back as soon as possible to experience the unified city. As a tramway enthusiast, with my East Berlin day visa, I had travelled to Ransdorf and seen these old trams disappearing into the woods, but not permitted to get on them, as they would take me beyond the validity of my visa, it was fantastic to now be allowed to travel on them to Woltersdorf. Incidentally, only now have modern trams been ordered to replace these, which ought to prompt another visit before long.

Moin! Ob Berlins Zukunft "in balance, good" ist? Ich hoffe es...für meine family.

I've been thinking of a way I can describe how impressed I am by this film... Perhaps it's best to say that it's broadcast quality and looks like it's been made by a large team of professionals, so I wouldn't have been surprised to see it on television. That is actually high praise for something produced by a lone (but hugely talented) KZbinr.

Amazing comprehensive video! Love the multidimensionality of Berlin. The truth is the fact that you visited Berlin and filmed this in Summer 2014, perhaps only a month after my own visit, makes this a kind of nostalgia for me as many of the places shown is exactly how I remember them.

I leave Northern California next week to go to Berlin for a two-week visit, my first since 1981. Your video is most helpful indeed and very enjoyable. Absolutely love the music played on the old-fashioned tinny piano beginning at 17:54 to describe the U-Bahn stations. I look forward to searching for some of that flavor of Old Berlin, even though the fact that the city is once again unified and full of new, wondrous things will be an eyeopening treat, too.

Excellent documentary. Truly one of the best, most comprehensive ones about Berlin I've seen, on any level!! The only thing that for me is missing, which I really would have appreciated, are the German names for places and monoments. Just a text subtitle when you're speaking the name of something would have been perfect. Still an awesome awesome video though :)

I considered that, but decided against it. One of the issues was where to put them; they wouldn't be able to go at the bottom of the picture, because they would then interfere with closed captions for those who had them switched on. Anywhere else, and they would distract from the images.
@mythinktube10 жыл бұрын
rewboss A relatively small caption at the top wouldn't hurt and people can turn off annotations if it bothers them.

Fantastic visual history of Berlin, I learnt so much and I’ve visited the city a few times. At last an explanation for the pink and blue pipe lines about four to five metres above ground, thank you. A much underrated tourist destination, but perhaps that’s a good thing. Locals told me that they were very concerned about property being purchased by nefarious ghostly entities from the east and changing the bohemian nature of the city.

Just stumbled over that video. Wittenbergplatz is a great idea. I love the concept of keeping modern pieces in the original design. The ads - a great thing. Tho a horror for every ad campaign manager. "So, after a week of work, this is how we want to present our product everywhere, and after that my team spent another 2 days to work out how we could advertise on that single station..."
@Bln-f9u2 жыл бұрын
Wittenbergplatz like most subway stations are under monumental preservation - We are actually trying to reduce the amount of ads to better highlight the historic value of the train station, for instance is Wittenberglatz designed by Swedish architect Alfred Grenander in the Jugendstil style with influence of Bruno Taut who wanted to improve the quality of urban-life through a diversity of colours.. the unnecessary amount of ads violates the regulations of monumental preservation wich in short the BVG and WALL didn't pay attention to most of the train stations however Wittenbergplatz is a nice example (more or less) on how public ads should be distributed. There also might be a civil petition in the future to make Berlin _ad free_ (more or less), at least that's the current secret agenda.
