Great video thank you! The PFD and ND view is now so clear on your videos, it's great to be able to watch them throughout the descent. In terms of handling, I see the PF making extremely tiny adjustements on the stick on final approach. Is the A320 that sensitive to stick input?

First of all, thank you very much for being a PLATINUM MEMBER of my channel! Being a member is a great new way to financially support the channel. It helps a lot to keep the channel running! And thanks for the good feedback! We control the roll rate with the stick. Maximum roll rate in normal law is 15 degrees per second. Some pilots make more and larger inputs and some less and even smaller inputs for the same results. Sometimes large inputs are required to keep the airplane on track, but often even small inputs are enough.

Nice video thx again for sharing. Just 1 point that I missed. Just during your briefing at the beggining of video your copilot identifiés that you were a little bit high and he decided to increase the speed. Not sure that I understood this during approach phase. Thx captain ! 😉
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Good question! When you are to high on the descent profile you can keep the speed and extend speedbrakes, landing gear or flaps. Another option is to increase the speed. A higher speed will provide a higher descent rate and shortens the flight time.
@MartinNeep Жыл бұрын
Drag increases with airspeed so the faster you fly, the steeper your idle descent profile will be. Also, in order to increase speed with the engines at idle, the aircraft has to pitch down which will cause it to 'catch up' with the profile. It's more efficient to lose excess height by speeding up, because you reach your destination more quickly and will save a little fuel. However, sometimes it's just not possible - for example if you have been issued a speed restriction by ATC. In this case you have to find the drag from somewhere else (speedbrakes, gear etc) or ask ATC for a longer routing.

Hello Cpt. Another super great approach video to Berlin on the 25L. 🤩 Unfortunately, the weather wasn't that good, a bit gusty on the approach, but it flew great. @ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! Airbus standard procedure is to start engine 2 first because engine 2 powers the yellow hydraulic system and the yellow hydraulic system powers the parking brake. This does not matter if we do the engine start during the pushback, but if we do the engine start on the apron, Airbus wants to make sure that the parking brake is powered to prevent any unwanted movement of the airplane.

Great video's and very helpful pilot's point of view for me as an airport (spatial) planner. Interesting to see that it looks like there is no ground handler that activates the VDGS or is supervising the docking at any point. Am I correct or overseeing something? Is the VDGS system activated through a main HMI in the airport control tower perhaps? Keep up the great video's.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and your good feedback! My understanding is that the VDGS system is set up somewhere by a central office at the airport, like apron control or Airport Control Center. For docking nobody is required as long as the system is working fine. We verify that it shows the correct aircraft model before we continue with the parking process. If the system is off, shows something like "wait" or "stop", we do not continue to the gate. At some airports, follow me cars are driving by to check if everything is working fine. If the system fails, they provide a manual guidance.
Жыл бұрын
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Thank you for your elaborate answer. At AMS we currently always have the ground handler at the stand to enable the VDGS and he or she is standing by at the STOP-button while overseeing the docking procedure. If anything does not go according to plan he or she can immediatly press the STOP-button in order for the VDGS to display a stop message. Such a centralized controlled system is very efficient though. By the way, I really appreciate the use of single engine taxi in procuredure, it greatly contributes to improved local air quality at and around the stands.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
@ Thanks for sharing your experience. At DUS airport - for example - there is no VDGS stop button at the bridge. Also several apron positions with no bridge are now equipped with the guidance system. There is a central ACC which uses lots of cameras to oversee the operations. In addition, there are follow me cars driving around at athe airport to check that everything works fine.

First time posting comment on one of your videos, but they are trully fantastic material. I love editing with all the approach and airport charts, camera views and timestampping for all relevant actions. At 14:40 during Flaps 2, speed quickly went up so it looked like it would pass 200 limit. What would happen if speed went over 200 knots, does plane still have some safe margin for overspeed? Also, during manual thrust landing, do pilots more make micro thrust adjustments or overall set some general thrust value? Thanks again for all of your hard work with these videos!
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
The Airbus has an overspeed protection system which activates at max speed plus 6 knots. The plane will not break apart when flying a few knots too fast. Depending on how fast, maintenance has to inspect the airplane and check that the flaps and slats and the extension mechanism are still in good shape. Before getting too fast, we use the speed brakes or extend the gear like during this approach. When flying manually on the ILS, sometimes we just increase the pitch a little bit to avoid the overspeed condition and then go back to the glideslope. Manual thrust landings may require large or small thrust changes. It depends on the situation (thermal activity, down- or updrafts, wind changes or wind shears ...).

Another excellent video captain. Forgive me if I misunderstood but why is the PM briefing the approach and not the PF?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and your great feedback! The briefing was done in accordance to the new Airbus briefing concept. This briefing concept and the new checklists were developed by Airbus together with representatives from several large airlines. First, the pilot flying prepares the approach, including a performance calculation and all setups in the MCDU. After that, the pilot monitoring checks the approach against the charts and briefs the approach. When this is finished, the pilot flying explains how she or he plans to fly the approach and briefs the landing performance plus the expected taxi routing.

Wonderful Video as always! Do you have any information source on how to do the VLS check? Are there any rules of thumb to do it? Thank you!
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Thanks! We just compare the VLS on the PFD with the VLS on the MCDU. If the VLS on the PFD is higher than the one on the MCDU, we add the difference to the approach speed. No rule of thumb or so.
@Rhinozherous Жыл бұрын

Hello Cpt. I have a question regarding to the VLS check that is conducted in all your videos. I've read already in the FCOM that the characteristics speeds for the PFD and FMGC usually differ and why. So which speed do you adjust to what value to achieve what?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Good question! The VLS from the MCDU is based on the zero fuel weight from the loadsheet plus the current fuel. The VLS which is displayed on the PFD is based on aerodynamical data (angle of attack) and the position of the CG. In landing configuration, we compare both VLS values. If the VLS on the PFD is higher than the VLS from the MCDU, we add the difference to the approach speed.

Another great video. Some questions: Are waypoints, such as XANIM, fictitious and unique names? Did I hear an NDB during the flight - are they still in active use? Finally, how do you remember all the vital commands that you have to read back to ATC? I'd have to write them down.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the great feedback! The waypoints are fictious names. We remember the ATC instructions because we dial them immediately into our autoflight system. Sometimes, we use the keypad of the MCDU to write them down before we are able to enter them. Enroute, clearances often show up electronically via the CPDLC system. The same is true for departure clearances on the ground, which we may get via ACARS.. If we do not get them electronically, we write them down.

Good question! No, not on very short final. The PAPI shall not be used below 200 feet. It may be unreliable at this low altitude. Instead, we look to the runway. The result may be that the PAPI does not show 2 red and 2 white anymore. But this does not matter.

So if I understand when we are below 200 feet, we musn’t watch the PAPI, we must watch the touchdown zone. So it’s not important if we are at 4 red in very short final. That’s it ?

And to be at 3 or 4 red, we need to pull down the joystick ?

@@Léo-f7w4m Ok. You want to continue with a stabilized descent until your flare. If you see 3 red lights or so at the end, it would not be a problem. But it is a good idea to include the PAPI in your scanning, as well as your vertical speed indicator. When reaching +/- 30 feet radio altitude, you have to start the flare. Until then, you want to keep your descent rate from the approach. For example with 140 knots groundspeed and a 3 degree glideslope, you have to descent with about 700 feet per minute.

Ok thank you very much. But I don’t understand. When we are approaching the rnwy, we are at 2 white and 2 red and below 200 feet, we look to the end of the rnwy and of corse, we are to high due to the PAPI so we must push a little bit the joystick that’s it ?? (I’m very sorry go ask you many questions)

Do you know I am wanting to go away in October to Spain but my passport runs out In April can I still get in to Spain ok for 7 nights

My understanding of the regulations is that the passwort or ID card has to be valid as long as your trip lasts. To be sure, I suggest to check the website of the government and/or airline.

Have you ever seen something up in the air that´s not explainable or are you not allowed to talk about this? I don´t mean some strange creatures you can find in Berlin, though.

This is a very good and interesting question! But I can tell you that I never saw something in the air which we could not explain. No UFOs or similar things.

I think charging people to watch videos is just going to loose you subscribers
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
I do not charge people for watching the videos! The videos will still be available for everybody, regardless of being a member or not! I just need some financial support of the channel because it costs lots of time and money to keep the channel running. KZbin suggested that memberships will help here. So I decided to create memberships. Several subscribers joined already to support the channel. The platinum members get the possibility to watch the videos before the normal release. That's all. No change for the subscribers who are not a member: The new videos will still be available for everybody on Saturday morning!
