Great trip report à long journey from Berlin in Germany to presov in Slovakia I liked the scenery around the elbe River around the German and Czech borders and also the transition from fields to moutains and forests in Slovakia. It is very interesting that continental Europe has so many international sleeper trains crossing multiple countries huge advantage there

The beautiful scenery of the Elbe river (7:28), the silhouette of the Dresden city center (6:23), all these seems so familiar! Ah, I was there, rode the exact same EC 175 from Berlin to Praha 18 years ago. That was in June of 2002, at that time the train was from Berlin Ostbahnhof to Praha-Holesovice, within an hour of the current schedule. We were using Europass, so we were entitled to first class seat. However, with an 8-years-old we chose the second class so we can have the entire compartment all for ourselves. I still remember, when we were waiting on the platform of Dresden Hbf, looking at the magnificent silhouette of Dresden city center in distance, I was quite upset that we did not plan a stopover for Dresden on that trip. Although I visited Germany a few times after that, I still have not visited Dresden!

Hey @doc7austin, a big fan of your rail videos from the Czech Rep. here. And what a tour! :) Two notes: 1) I think ZSSK has no cooperation with DB (this only pertains to Prg-Berlin-Hamburg line co-operated by ČD and DB and Prg-Nürnberg bus service operated by DB) hence the leg from Prague to Bratislava/Nové Zámky is run in terms of joint public interest service of Czech and Slovak Railways, not as a commercial venture. That's why the number of the train set changes in Praha hl.n. (to Slovenská strela), and again in Bratislava hl.st. (to Pressburg): it is a different service from the Berlin/Hamburg one, not a conjoint one. 2) The so-called 'Happy Hours' by ČD Restaurant in their cars are an outrageous policy. I hope a day will come when a proper EU body intervenes, banning this evident rip-off that's been going on for many years now. I've even written a letter of protest to the ČD management once and received a reply saing that it is a way of evening out VAT taxation in the territories of different EU countries. Double pricing of providing identical products and services based on territory, which it really is, is legally forbidden across the EU, though. Some decade ago, it didn't use to be called 'Happy Hours': they only came up with this masquerade not to be sued so readily for geographic selectiveness (the times of the 'Happy Hours' are identical with arrivals/departures from Czech border stations with a margin tolerance provided by the train crew - these are of course masked train delays at the border crossings...). Anyway, I hope you've enjoyed the trip across the former Czecho-Slovak territory! (y)

but the food is not freshly made - its usually prepared at a factory - and then just heated up on the train
@jmsmilfajt4 жыл бұрын
Even for locals, these prices are accessible and that's the main point. Regarding food, it's not factory-produced, it's freshly prepared a few hours in advance and then stored ready to be served either kept pre-heated or frozen (just like minute-meals in hotel restaurants). There are also exceptions that are always prepared inside the train like a freshly fried Schnitzel. :)

Also, I really enjoy seeing your dining car experiences. Thanks again! BTW, how many languages do you speak? :)

If I may, I am going to outline the country crossings for you: 0:00 - 9:16 - Germany, from Berlin to Schöna (the DE-CZ border station near Děčín). Fun fact, mentioned in the video, the right bank of the Elbe River opposite to Schöna is already the Czech Republic. Opposite to Schöna is Hřensko, a small Czech town acting as a gateway to the Czech Switzerland National Park with many great sights and attractions. If you're a movie-savvy person, you might have seen the park's biggest attraction - Pravčická Brána (Pravčická Gate) in one of the Chronicles of Narnia movies. 9:16 - 22:30 - the Czech Republic, running from Děčín (not shown) to Břeclav, which is the CZ-SK border station on the Czech side; the Slovakian border station is Kúty, where the author had to move to the sleeping car through the station as the conductor closed the door leading to the sleeping car. The rest of the video all the way to Prešov is the Slovak Republic. Hope it helped you :)

It’s ridiculous that you have to pay split tickets for the same journey what is wrong with railway companies that they can’t just offer you the lowest price for a continuous journey, it’s the same in the UK to travel any sort of distance it’s cheaper to buy split tickets, the governments will have to step in and protect the travellers from being overcharged for a journey that consists of the same train no changes and only takes moving from one carriage to another
@doc7austin4 жыл бұрын
the problem is that CD is only selling discounted tickets for CZ->SK; SK->CZ; CZ->DE; DE-CZ, but not for DE->CZ->SK or SK->CZ->DE ----> the ticket must either start or end in Czech Republic to receive a large discount
