Absolute superb video. This video shows (at least, in my opinion) the essence of travelling and discovering by train (or bike). Slow travelling (working life is fast and intens enough) enjoying and experiencing the scenery and landscape. And sometimes meeting people/pax on the way. Personally, I want to be a discoverer/traveller, not just a tourist making photo's for social media.

The HzPP 2044 series locomotives are one of the few locomotives in Europe that use a EMD engine (EMD GT22HW-2; 12-645). Some others that are similar in design are HZ Series 2062 (16-645), HZ 2063 (GT26CW-2; 16-645E3C engines). The last of these are mainly freight locomotives in Sweden (ex-DSB MH, MZ, ME diesel locomotives). Only some newer versions, mainly 16-710s and a few 16-645s operate in Europe, mainly with smaller German, French and Swiss freight operators. Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia use these for cross-border and regular passenger & freight traffic. They all have them because they're former Yugoslav states, where during the early 80s before the breakup, they were built for Yugoslav State Railways. However, due to lines still being cut because of the aforementioned conflicts in the video, some are sold or held in storage pending engine rebuilds and upgrades. It won't be long till even these are being sold and sent elsewhere, being replaced by Siemen's Vectron electric locomotives.

I can understand the locking of doors on approach of Slovenia border and until border formalities have been made. ( prevent people from jumping off train and bypassing border checkpoints). But elsewhere on journey there is no justification. I rememger in the early 1980s Via Rail Canada would lock the door between coach and business class car. (I travelled once in business and was able to go to the coach snack bqr to get extra food, but couldn't come back to my car !) Disapointed there is no dining car on the train. (still remember seeing one of your videos of PKK breafast omelette in dinig car :-) Always fascinating to learn history from your captions. Am old enough to remember the news about the balkan wars and breakup of Yougoslavia, so good to actually see images and read of the impacts even on railways.

Nice video, Im taking this trip in August (23), I just booked it, for 4 people in 2 x 2 sleeper cabins (I think they are next to each other based on the numbering) and it was €139 each but its non-cancellable ticket. Their website was a bit confusing about compartments for 3 and ladies etc but I managed to work it out in the end. Last year I went on Regiojet, we only paid €208 for a "private" 4 compartment, the aircon broke so they gave us 50% back as credit, Pilsner beer only 1 Euro and free good coffee made it a nice trip.. However we moved to an empty compartment (there were a few even in early August) with AC :-) . Regiojet are using buses from Ogulin to Split this year, thats a shame (4.5 hours on a bus before a night train ride isnt great hence we're going on the OBB Night train.

(28:51) As with other details, the customer (the railroad company) decides what type of window they want. Air-conditioned cars are usually built with the windows closed because air conditioning makes no sense with the windows open and a lot of energy would be wasted heating or cooling the area. - Cheers, Heinz

The disadvantage of Split is that it does not have an electrified line and the surrounding stations are short, the express train is limited to 7 cars. Ploče suits much better due to electrification and track condition. A longer train with a larger capacity of passengers and cars could go to Ploče.

Loved the scenery around Croatia 😍 the mountains forests coast and fields especially with the open windows also liked the scenery in Austria including the seating car moquette. However it is a shame the staff was restrictive to you in terms of closing the coaches. Maybe they should realise that people want to explore the train instead of sticking to one carriage

Did you know that sleeping and couchette coaches, or generally night trains were quite often visited by a thieves? And I am sure that these times are not gone... So locking the door between these coaches is for safety of the passengers and their belongings. Maybe after few years of travelling by trains during night you will realise, that the reasons are really reasonable...

Actully worst railways in EU are Bulgarian and Romanian, with Slovenian, Hungarian, Croatian, Baltic states having about equally bad infrastructure. But there's massive investment ongoing in to Croatian and Slovene Railways, and high speed line is planned between Rijeka and Zagreb, and there are plans to completely revamp Zagreb main railway corridor, to raise it with a brand new central station, turning old station in to a hotel or something. Although atm these are just plans, but they'll eventually do something about it I presume by 2027/8, at least the local politicans are saying that and EU funding is kicking in as well. Croatian road network on the other hand is one the best in the EU.
