Berlin (Schönhauser Allee) Tram & U-Bahn 1990

Thank YOU so much. Fond memories of the UBHAN and strasembaan (Trams), Shanhouzer Elle, the Famous TV Tower with revolving resturaunt, Alexanderplattz and all that stuff as little kid. I beleive it has changed dramatically now. This will remain in my memories for as long as I live. As a kid we had the best life in DDR can't speak for what the adults expereinced back then.

I agree, it's amazing to see how far Berlin has come since those days. They've really done up the U-bahn and S-bahn since reunification.

I'm not sure I completely understand your question, but here's a shot -- Many older streetcars in many cities only have doors on one side of the car -- usually the side facing the sidewalk has the doors. You can fit more seats onto the car if you don't have doors on both sides.

Not just the bakery.., there were pavement cafes, and on the other side of the street there was an indoor shopping centre. I do not recall seeing any of that in April 1990! Its a shame though that passengers must still board trams by walking out in the road - they should put the tramstops in the centre of the road under the U-Bahn. This will make interchange much easier and life safer - for everyone. Simon

Even though it was the East there are still some Western cars here... The contrast between 1990 and 2005 was very dramatic, what with the pavement cafes and the shops. But I was hioping that the trams would have doors on both sides so that passengers could board / alight from the central reservation under the U-Bahn rather than by walking out into what is now a very busy road. Much safer! Simon

I was wondering, are the doors open only to the side where there are cars cuz before, the wall was there? I don`t really get it... Plus, do you know where I can find a map with the wall in it? hmm, the 'old' colours were of the GDR, the modern colours are of the former 'West' Berlin. I have no preference. Simon

Ich bin kein Fan von dieser Baureihe. Die Straßenbahn, die zwischen Köpenick und Schmöckwitz verkehrte fand ich immer noch am besten. Auch die ehemal. Wagen der Westberliner Straßenbahn liebe ich, denn die fahren immer noch im täglichen Linieneinsatz in Karlsruhe, ohne zerkratzten Scheiben. Ein Ticket hat damals 10Pfg gekostet. Knöpfe hatten aber in der Zahlbox auch Platz....hehe

@Nudelsalatbomber Man hat leicht reden, wenn man nicht in der Situation "von allem zu wenig" leben musste... "zu viele Menschen"... ich meine, Berlin ist eine Großstadt - die größte in Deutschland und im EU - Vergleich auch unter den größten Metropolen dabei. Wenn dies einem stört dann gibt es beschaulichere Plätze wie Teltwo, Königswusterhausen, Hennigsdorf...

Das werden die Lüfter für die Motorensteuerung sein. Die legen auch heute noch ordentlich los, besonders, wenn der Zug anfährt.

@@amonduul9010 Es gab damals (vor der Modernisierung) regelmäßig Fahrschalterbrände, da die alten Bauelemente qualitativ eher minderwertig verarbeitet waren. Das war auch der Grund, warum die GI in Pjöngjang nach nur knapp drei Jahren Einsatzzeit wieder aus dem Tunnel „verbannt“ wurden, und auch, warum die GI/1 bei der Modernisierung in Berlin dann Dora-Fahrschalter bekommen haben. Auch die griechischen GIII haben regelmäßig gefackelt. Es gab hinterher in Ost-Berlin auch eine GI/1-Garnitur, die testweise mit Thyristoren gefahren ist, das war im Betrieb allerdings zu teuer und hat sich nicht durchgesetzt.

Ich kenne auch einen begeisterten Prenzlberger ( der dort geboren ist, und dort wohl auch sterben wird ;-) ) und diese Erinnerungsstütze sehr toll fand, aber auch meinte, dass es heuter weniger grau in grau ist, und gerade das Treiben interessanter ist, als eine spröde Verkehrsstraße. Eines muss ich Dir aber beipflichten, der Prenzlberg ist mir zu "hipp", nur coole, hippe, tolle Menschen... da gefallen mir "Drecksecken" wie Neukölln & Kreuzberg eher...
