This virtual Berlin tour of the city deals with Berlin Battlefield Damage from 1945. Even today Berlin still bears the scars of the intense 2 week Battle of Berlin In 1945. This ended World War Two in Europe, but the evidence still remains, citywide. As the 30 year unification and modernisation rebuilding project comes to an end, Berlin Snapshots will record these relics. They are disappearing, and soon the vivid reminders of conflict and the finale of of one of history's the darkest global upheavals will be lost forever.

from an historical standpoint I feel like these sites should be protected and preserved, the sooner we forget, the sooner it happens again.

The level of destruction in Berlin in 1945 is truly mind-boggling. Previous to the huge battle in the streets with the Russians, Allied bombing had created enormous damage. This was Hitler's final parting gift to the German people.

I spent several weeks in Spandau in 1966 and can vividly remember the scars on the buildings. Mother (now 91) grew up there and has some almost unbelievable stories to tell.

Great video. When I was in Berlin, the most amazing site was the reichstag. When they restored it, they didn't replace the stone or columns....just added square patches in the shelled areas. It was amazing to look up close and see this first hand. Of course, we've all seen pictures of the front with the 88mm anti tank/ anti aircraft gun....found the position and stood on the mark....just wow.

I lived in Berlin for several years too and I think the obsession of my countrymen with fixing everything to shiny standards is actually destroying the historic monuments. I found a railway bridge over a street on the former road no. 1 (to Königsberg), in the east of Berlin, where there were no edges, every pillar was round from thousands of bullet impacts. And I'm sure my countrymen 'repaired' that. or will do so soon. Madness! These are monuments!

Dunkirk is a amazing place to see war damage, even now. Even the graveyard has battle damaged headstones. The Red Army didn't 'invade' Berlin.

What did they do then? Certainly not liberate it(maybe half of it, but not the soviet sector).

What you are looking at is Armor Piercing Rounds. Fragmentation won’t do that.

That was pretty scary to even *look* at, even 70+ years later!! I'm surprised the damage hasn't compromised the integrity of these structures!

that was probably a 76mm armour piercing round that made that hole. Structural cast iron like that would be relatively "soft" compared to armour plate.

Thank you for posting!! It shows many facets: The poignancy, to think most people who were there when this damage was done are now dead. The persistence, in that these scars can still be seen after 75 years. Human engineering, to think that Kruppstahl still holds up the S-Bahn after all these years, despite the damage! The reminder that no matter how much you want to modernize a city, you must and cannot forget the sacrifices of millions to end the third reich and everything it stood for!

You can find this nearly in every german city. But this relicts become every year rar and rar. For example I saw last year a destroyed small house of an direct bomb hit from the ww2 era. It was near of the center of the city heart. Now the house is gone and there is some sort of shopping center on it.

I would say that "Berlin's darkest period" isn't the invading soviet army. The darkest period is the almost 12 years the Nazis were in charge. Also the bombing from the western allies could be considered as well.
