I visited first time in Berlin 1984. I visited also in East Berlin. The wall was real. I visited again in Berlin 2007. The wall was gone - finally. New Berlin is great.

@trueman mann My Country was very prosperous from 1945 until 1970, then two socialist presidents came with their progressive reforms during 10 years. 40 years later the Country is still struggling with poverty, violence and corruption produce by those "socialist reforms". I know very well what Socialism is !

You really have no clue...and that's not meant as demeaning. I grew up in a former Communist country, and left when I was 16 for the US and I remember everything! The big wigs in the Central Committee decided 10 yrs before the end of the system that the president had to die (1989). The pigs divided the country's navy and other means if financial gold pots as though they earned these - they stole everything and left the new govts to beg for financial help from the free countries.

In the 20th century, the city of Berlin underwent a series of immense changes from the destruction of World War II, followed the construction of the Berlin Wall and the clearings next to it. A really bizarre story, in how dense urban areas that were heavily populated were turned into empty spaces, then built up again.

Konigsberg im Ostprussie. It appears to have been quite an idyllic place before the madness of the 30s and 40s which brought it to its tragic fate. I didn't realise it until fairly recently,but Stalin must have played a blinder of a game of hardball at Yalta and Potsdam to get the borders of both the USSR and Poland shifted westwards like that,whether it be for the purpose of merely putting more buffer land between Moscow and the countries to the West or part of a greater game of expansionism,or both. It's said when Russian soldiers saw it they questioned why Germany went to war against them when they had all that already.

I visited East Berlin through checkpoint Charlie on August 1973. At the crossing on the East side we were compelled to buy a certain amount of DDR marks, in the way back eastern guards refused to buy back their marks but suggested to make donation for North Vietnam war efforts. I still vividly remember the memorials of few young people killed in their attempts to cross the wall and some buildings destroyed during the war and yet to be rebuilt. It is an irony or an insult that the current Chancellor at that time was a full supporter of the communist regime and now she occupies the highest position in the country. Hard to believe.

I visited East Berlin in 1970-a quarter century after the end of the war. There was so little traffic in the streets and you could actually hear the birds chirping. By comparison the western sector was teaming with activity and lots of noise. While the rubble had been cleares, so many buildings had only walls to show where homes once stood. I can still see a very large tree growing in the middle of what once had been a row house. And armed East German soldiers in their guard towers just a few feet from me. And, yes, visitors had to buy 5DM, almost like an admission fee, to get in. But you couldn't keep it and leave with any East German money, so you tried to spend it or donate it.

An interesting report. The history of Berlin from 1949 - 1961 is rarely covered; the declaration of the West German state, followed by that of the DDR, the 4 power status of Berlin, and the tremendous efforts of the West to underline the DDR and the eastern sector of Berlin. to name but a few.
@letecmig5 жыл бұрын
"tremendous efforts of the West to underline the DDR"-you mean that the ´West´ forced 3 millions of East Germans to leave all what they had on the eastern side and walk to West Germany with nothing?

In Bernaura Strasse almost all of that has been rebuilt as a tourist attraction. 20 years ago there was a short piece of wall and some markets on the wasteland. 10 years ago they started 're-creating' this area. There was no tower there 12 years ago. But hey, make some money from tourists yeah!
