I am watching your video with melancholy. I also know Berlin from the pre-1989 era, and I really wish myself back in that time. Berlin was not so crowded as it is today and the division of the city and visits to East Berlin were so interesting and there was so much to experience. Today, Berlin is just an ordinary city like many others.

My visit there a year later was one of my favorite in Germany. Every where seems to have changed since my last in 2017. I wish i had appreciated the 80s more in my youth seeing how things turned out.

Even though, I was a young man of 19 in Wales at the time, the energy of the fall of the Berlin Wall could be felt even by us. The build up had already being happening and it was clear that something was about to happen. The steady flow of East Germans through Hungary to the West. Hungary had opened its borders. The protests in East Germany and the Solidarność Movement of then trade unionist leader and later President of Poland, Lech Wałęsa in Gdansk, Poland. Whilst the song itself was released in 1986, I have always associated the song 'The Final Countdown' by Swedish band Europe with this period. I quite can't recall, but perhaps it was because the song was played over and over at that time. Indeed, it was still popular and only 3 years old, so it is quite plausible. It is fact that one of the last broadcasts by a former East German Radio Station played the intro of the song just prior to the unification of Germany in 1990. This was an exciting time in Europe and there was a lot of hope for the future. It was however, brief. The wars in the Balkans put an end to all of that good energy and Putin taking over in the 1990s from Boris Yeltsin, already signaled as the decade progressed that Russia was taking a different path to the countries of the former Warsaw Pact and some of the former Soviet States such as the three Baltic countries of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. We all know without a doubt in 2023 that the Russia of today treats the rights of its citizens in a similar way to that of the former USSR, minus the communism and has imperial ambitions that the Tsars of old would immediately recognise. Let 2023 be 'The Final Countdown' for Putin, Lukashenko of Belarus and the Russian Federation.

I had a feeling that something was up that week with the Alexanderplatz Demonstration of November 4th. You just can’t have over a half-million demonstrators show up wishing for political reforms. And the government not have an answer. My contact in East Berlin predicted that the border would have been opened by November 11th. A fitting date in my mind. And with Honecker replaced several weeks earlier, the writing was on the wall for the DDR.

They didn't watch the news that evening or in the morning? The Trabant cars in West Berlin should have been a sign that something is off.

I'm not sure to be honest, I was one of the kids in the video. A lot of the facts went over my head at the time. My Dad may have known, and taken us kids to the zoo out of caution at first. My Mom and her friend didn't go to the zoo (They are in my other videos) and may have been "scoping" it out to see if it was safe to bring us later after the zoo...and we did go to Checkpoint Charlie immediately after the zoo (as seen in my other videos)
