Berlin Wall Open air museum at the Bernauer Strasse

Wall installations, a blown-up church, escape tunnels...the Bernauer Strasse is one of the best places to visit if you want to learn more about the Berlin Wall.

I visited Berlin in 1987 and 1988. One evening during my second visit I decided to visit Bernauer Strasse, travelling on the U-Bahn through the ghost stations under East Berlin. By the time I got there is was dark, and the street was virtually deserted. I walked alongside the wall to an observation platform, climbed it and found myself almost opposite a watchtower, with the occupants watching me watching them. I clearly remember how bright the lighting in the deathstrip was, especially against the white interior walls, and how eerily quiet it was.

I’m Polish and as a child whenever we’d ask where we were going my father would reply “we are going to the hinterbrook!” Which I’m pretty sure was in reference to hinterland.

Awesome video!!!!! Excellent work!!! Where I served on the Czechoslovak border between Czechoslovakia and West Germany back in the late 1980s, these kinds of fortifications obviously, were not at our location near Weiden. There were some border posts and fences with towers along with Czechoslovak and Soviet border guards. Our brothers north of us with the 11th armored cavalry at OP Romeo, and OP alpha, had much more dense fortifications facing them since they faced east Germany.

I lived in West berlin for 8 years as my father was part of the British intelligence community in West Berlin. Was an interesting time.
