My brother and I were dependents on a small US Air Force base in the Ardennes, from 1960 to 1963. There were woods behind the village with burned out tanks, and LOTS of unexploded ordnance. We were verboten (forbidden) to go back there. I was seven, my brother was a little older...we went back there every chance we got. This was only 15 years after WW2 ended.

@Phil McCrevice - I understood that a war was fought, and that the tanks and other weapons in the woods were as a result of it. There must have been a ton of unexploded ordnance back there, it's a wonder we weren't hurt.

The items of thin metal are called feeler gauges. They are in various thickness and are used to measure the clearance of valves to camshaft/rocker arms . Due to there large size I'd suggest they are for truck and tank engines. Most were made of thin brass and explains the lack of corrosion.

Just think, the last time someone held that rifle and bolt was at the end of WW2 when a German soldier(or volkssturm) tossed away the bolt and rifle in different directions to prevent use and either surrendered or went home. And now you're holding it and likely find the bolt that went to that gun. How far away from each other were they?

I`m from Scotland, my son moved to Berlin 2 years ago. To get away from the city he cycles to Kostrzyn in Poland and gets the train back. He goes through woodland, the same woods you have in your video. When I told him the history of this area, he was amazed. Now when he stops for a break he goes 30 - 40 feet away from the track for a look. Sent photos of things he found lying on the surface, mostly shrapnel, but he did find a spent K98 cartage in the summer. He took it home and his wife screamed ! Great video and such great incredible finds, pre IKEA wrench, love it.

My great uncle served for the U.S. during WW2. I’ve heard tales from my grandma about him during the war. This was pretty interesting. He was some sort of guard, don’t remember what it was exactly. He would sometimes chat with the German prisoners in their language, and offer them cigarettes. They were impressed by how well an American could speak German.

When you see the landscapes and the places in colour, hearing the wind blowing through the trees, it seems easier to imagine the sound of approaching vehicles and the shouts of the German and the Soviet troops and the sounds of their weapons.. "stavoi!" & "achtung!" and the 'tap tap tap tap!!' of the Gew-43s and 'bbbrrrr!' of the MG 34's etc. Most WW2 pictures are black and white so modern day colour film really does bring the battlefields to life.

A friend of mine hunts with a rifle that his grandfather brought home as a souvenir from The Pacific in WWII.. it is a bolt action Japanese rifle that my buddy says is in very good condition and accurate. He uses it for deer hunting.. I know nothing about guns so I could not answer any questions on what it is.I remember my buddies grandmother who lived in my neighborhood also. I saw his grandfather‘s gun collection all on display on the wall in thier basement. I never met the grandfather who died in the 1960,, But he had two nice hobbies,Besides his collection of 27 rifles.Every day he brought home a dollar bill and put it between the pages of a book, and emptied his pockets of change into a 5 gallon glass water bottle. He filled many books, and filled 3/5 gallon water bottles with silver change. They were all filled during the 30s 40s 50s 60s.. My friend inherited the books with a dollar bill between each page, the 27 rifles, and the 3/5 gallon glass water bottles filled with silver coins. My friend Jimmy and I went to the same grade school/high school/and We worked at the same company for 40 years, and we would often talk about The rifles and the coins. The last time we talked about them was 2016 Which is coincidentally when we both retired, and he still has not been tempted to catalog all those coins yet. Along the same topic lines, my wife has to piggy banks that were filled in the 50s and 60s with coins her father would give her for her bank when he got home from his truck driving job every day..Each bank is about the size of a gallon paint can. They were in her mothers attic forgotten about when she re discovered them after her mother died in 2014. I can’t convince my wife to catalog the coins there either. she thinks I’m gonna put them in a bubblegum machine or a parking meter Meanwhile, I worked in the field for most of my 40 years with the local electric company. I found coins practically every day, and I have never spent a single coin that I found. I have three containers of every coin I ever found, into this day, every coin I find, goes in one of those containers/gallon glass milk jugs. I have three of them filled.. I still to this day look for coins the best place I have ever found for a lot of coins at one time, Mall parking lots where they push the snow to with snowplows. After the snow melts of course

One of the best things my late World War II Army Veteran father did was write to a Japanese Soldier and he was in the Pacific Theater in the Philippines. He told me straight out, that if the United States lost World War II, we wouldn't be speaking German or Japanese but rather we would 'sue for peace' and suffer punishing war reparations and punishing taxes on fuel/oil supplies. But that Germany and Japan didn't have the manpower to occupy America.

That is an Italian coin that was printed from 1923 - 1935. Seems odd that it would be buried in the woods near Berlin. I don't think the German's really drafted Italian soldier to fight the Russians on the German border. The Italians were too preoccupied defending Axis Italy from the allies, until it fell in 1944, as did the Italian forces. So there wouldn't have been Italian forces in the Battle of Berlin which was in 1945. I'm guessing it was dropped by a German soldier who had visited Italy, or been on duty there. He almost certainly has it as a souvenir.
