I came to America in 1971. I found a Berlitz method with a book and a LP. After 3 years and going to different schools I still felt left out conversational meetings. But I found the solution to my problems with this method. I want to help now others but I can’t find the same book with same format . I remember there were 3 lines repeated : one with pronunciation, another one with translation. I wonder why they don’t make anymore like this. This was designed to learn it on your own without any supervision or teacher. I can say that the best method ever.

Here is the link to the test - www.berlitz.com/online-placement-test/adults/en A copy of the test results are sent to the Language Center selected when you first begin the test. I loved Berlitz back in 1985 and wanted to work for them, I interviewed with them to become an instructor in spanish and they rejected me and chose a more histrionic, dramatic person - a white woman with no hispanic roots - and my self esteem was damaged for an entire decade. Nowadays I confidently say EFFFFFF you, Berlitz Houston, TX, you SUCKED because you had no critical thinking skills in the hiring process!

I noticed similar things when teaching for Berlitz. Their ideal teacher is a bit of an actor/comedian willing to "perform" in front of students. Maybe that would work for 1 lesson, but with up to 12 lessons a day, no teacher can keep the act going all day. Plus, every time a student stops to think or take notes or just freezes, it slows everything down and the momentum is lost.
