Marlin are hard enough to get to a hook up on lures get rid of those hooks get a thicker gauge hook and file the point down to like a razor.

Had that exact hook straighten on a barrel twice last season. Will never use ‘Em again 😑

I went the heavy gauge on all my skirts after seeing another youtuber have a light gauge pakula hook straighten on a marlin too

Huge Effort by you and your team. That's dedication right there! What brand/spec. hooks are now advocated to ensure no more straightening from barrels/marlin? Can you elaborate on how the ocean current messed up your plans? Why is the ocean current no good for slimies? What Apps are recommended to best show the ocean current of your fishing locale in advance and before you hit the water? Cameron

Thanks mate, I’ve got a few seasoned blokes who are used to the disappointment haha. In terms of hooks, it’s wide open. I don’t think I’ll use the Pakula dojos anymore. Im running some kajiki hooks on some lures and will try them this season on the tuna as I love the gauge and sharpness. The current was pushing 5 knots and not allowing the bait to hold or the fish to concentrate. The 26 degree temp also kept stripes away.

For the slimies the current was pumping so it was hard for them to swim against the current whilst getting towed. This meant you could only keep them alive by drifting with the current, which is hard when you are trying to drag them around sounded fish. Hands down only app is RipCharts, you can get basic data from bom but if you want to be serious about marlin fishing you need to run RipCharts. It’s expensive but worth every cent.

Thanks mate. So, does Rip Charts show ocean current real time with the premium subscription? For ideal conditions for trolling live bait, what should the current be? I am new to this game (with 670C due in June this year), but I thought ocean current would always exist? What drives the current in Bermi? What conditions stops ocean current stop in PPB, Bermi, etc? How do live bait stay alive when they are being trolled (even in ideal conditions)? Cheers

@@Camh1968 it gives hourly updates so not quite real time. The slimies are pretty tough, so anything around 3knots is fine for them, 5 just makes them work too hard.

@@Camh1968 yeah there are always currents. But the EAC that drives the current off the east coast was running very hard with hot tropical water. It stops when the current takes a different track.
