Wonder how difficult it would be to add a brace at the top of the pivot point on the swing bike to support it so it doesn't bend. Sure you can just bend it back but with metal fatigue over time I imagine it'd break eventually. Either way, great collection!
@dustinbrueggemann1875 Жыл бұрын
Probably pretty easy actually. You'd just need some solid round stock matching the inner diameter of that tube and then a plate that drops around the seat tube that you could bolt through.

There are shims available for 27.2mm seatposts to fit the weird 30.4mm diameter of the Kent Trouvaille (e.g. from Cane Creek). And while the selection of 27.2mm dropper posts is quite low, there are some to choose from (OneUp, PWM, KindShock, etc). The other route would be to ream the seat tube to fit a 30.9mm seatpost. I myself wouldn't do so due to safety concerns, but one KZbinr actually did this.

I was able to get a 30.9 internal dropper on my Trouvaille. I reamed the seat tube from 30.4 to 30.9 and drilled an access hole in the bottom of the seat tube that is near the BB to get the cable in the seat tube. It works great. No noticable difference with the .25mm missing from the wall thickness of seat tube. My thoughts were... if I am already drilling and grinding the frame, why not add reaming too. 😂

part of me wonders if it would be possible to reinforce the pivot on a swing bike with some connection at the top. my assumption is that someone's already thought that through and decided it either doesn't work or isn't worth the time/money/effort, but I still wonder.

If it helps at all, you're riding a bit high for muni. On pavement most people like to have it the seat up but the second you hit a bump it'll buck you. As a fellow short unicyclist i'd recommend getting a kris holm fusion-one saddle/post since you can get it a bit lower than the one you currently have. Also, if you can post on your arm to distribute weight instead of just sitting, it'll help compensate for bumps too. it's not immediately intuitive, but it's a must for riding trails.

As of 4/2023 there are 618 different types of bikes. Five categories: 1) Antique-vintage-classic (balloon tire), Common, Unorthodox, Competition/Sport, Utility. Categories separated into groups of which there are many. Eventually, maybe a book that outlines everything. Never thought that I'd find this many, but here we are, five years later. The list grows bigger every week when I find yet another new type. Favorite? The road grader bike.

I remember the ORIGINAL late 60's Swing Bike, pitched by Jimmy Osmund. It was a Sting-Ray style bike, with springs under the top tube to give stability around center, and a lock-out so it could ride like a normal bike. It also lacked the cantilever pivot tube that always bends on your model. Like the makers first build, it's basically two, fully supported, head tubes with the rear "fork" being the whole drive train. Looking at the new "Swing King", it makes me think they were scared to just let the pivot be the seat tube. Maybe it needs to be that far forward of the seat to be controllable, not sure, but that was not an issue with a banana seat on the original.

You'll have a lot better luck free-mounting the unicycle if you start with the pedals level, and only put enough weight on the back pedal to stop yourself from rolling backwards - most of your weight should be supported by your arm on the handle. For a large wheel, starting while rolling forwards slightly can also help, since you don't have to overcome the inertia of the wheel to start moving.

About 50 years ago, when I was just a kid, there were a couple of guys riding tall bikes around. And they were really tall. The bike frames were turned upside down, so the cranks were on top where the seats should have been. They had really long seat posts coming from what used to be the bottom of the frame, and tall ape hanger handlebars that may have come off Schwinn Sting-Rays, mounted on long handlebar stems. When I saw these guys riding around, it looked like the circus was in town. 😄 They were teenagers and didn't do any welding AFAIK. They just flipped 26" frames over upside down and bolted everything together. I don't remember if the crank was turned around so the chain was on the right side, but I think they were. Or they may have had caliper brakes instead of coaster brakes. It was way too long ago to remember all the details. Maybe you can build a tall bike that way. Like kids who cobbled together whatever they could find.

With your mentioning that every swing bike bends on the pivot, it really begs the question, why doesn't anyone make a swing bike with a double sheer pivot instead of that single sheer? I get that it makes it difficult to service/take apart but I feel like a bolt on top brace would solve that issue.

The constantly bending pivot point on the pivot bike would be easy to fix. Just pull the cap out of the pivot point, mount a goose neck into it, and then weld a piece of tube from the goose neck to the upright. As soon as I saw it, I thought "That will bend. It's not supported at the top, and has a massive rotational moment on it."
