The lovely Bernadette Peters... one of the crushes of my youth. Loved this. They don't make TV like this anymore. I wonder how many people nowadays actually know who Stephen Sondheim was? And also the Carol Burnett show. So sad that we don't have entertainment like this anymore! Bernadette Peters is now 73 years old. We have lost a great number of wonderful performers over the recent years. I hope she sticks around for many more years to come.

I think you'd be surprised, Sondheim's a legend and any theater kid who knows their Lin Manuel Miranda knows Sondheim. We're coming up on a theater Renaissance, just wait
@ManyInterestsLittleTime2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I'm 23 and have always loved Sondheim ever since my older sister had to watch a Broadway performance of into the woods for theater class. I stole the cd from her and watched and rewatched. He's definitely a gateway for a lot of people my age because everything he wrote was so relatable. His songs help a lot when I'm going through tough times, even now.

It is almost unimaginable that we would see something like this on prime time TV today: a variety show that devotes a lengthy segment to Stephen Sondheim with top tier Broadway talent and thus brings his work to the masses, which the skit’s premise reflects with a wink. Just terrific!
@musictchr673 жыл бұрын
True. Unfortunately, growing up in the 70s, I lost interest quickly when the big, theatrical numbers started. Though already a singer & pianist, I remember turning off this very skit more than once! I didn't know what I was missing!!

Ms Peters came to Vancouver 3 years ago to perform her one woman show with the VSO. MAGNIFICENT!! She wore the lowest cut sequined gown that still permitted a family rating, slit high enough to allow high kicking from which she never for 1-second hesitated. I might add that chiffon was not incorporated into the bodice to disguise aging of the decolettage because there was no need!! FLAWLESS, as was her voice. No raspiness or lowering of key signature; as pure as it was on her album from 1980/81. XoXo 💋💯❤🌹

A fan of Burnette since the 60s & of Peters since 1980. Is there a status in the USA similar to Japan's "National Treasure" or Britain's OBE? If there is, I sincerely hope both of these treasures have been duly recognized in such a capacity. XoXo 💯💋❤🌹

@@WellbredNfedKembleTV We have the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Medal of Freedom. Also, simply earning an Oscar, Emmy, Tony or Grammy is fairly close to the same, among the masses anyway. The common citizen would probably be more likely to "bow in honor" (figuratively) to someone with one of those last few awards over the first two, even though the first two should be more respected. But that's America - pop culture consumes. The Nobel Prize would get you into a lot of doors too.

It's the little touches of comedic genius, like the handing over of the dental floss... and the subsequent straight drop to the ground Carol then gave it. Collaborative moments between fluent artists--whether in music or writing or performance--show the best of what humans can accomplish. It's way more fun to laugh at ourselves than to holler blame at others anyway. :)

How clever is this? It pokes great fun of the fact that Sondheim is an acquired metropolitan taste by having a provincial diner audience of blue collar guys come in to hear a Sondheim concert, which we know they’d never do, while simultaneously putting Sondheim on popular TV show to give a taste of his and Bernadette’s and Carol’s genius.
