I'm on a Bernadette binge and I think I need to stop because I'm almost out of tears. This song expresses something so deeply human about being haunted by someone or something that's gone. And Peters delivers it with such vulnerability and directness, you believe every word.

I met Bernadette in bookstore while reading a book of death and life. She was standing over me and her pretty face. And she said it is a good book. I didn't answer for a moment she was so real angelic . She gave me relief for a moment. I was suffering from the loss of my mother. She has an outstanding soul . I hope I see her again for her utmost love and respect. Respectfully. Anthony Bove'

Hate everyone giving out that her voice isnt as strong as it used to be and it's time to give up or that she missed some notes, the woman is 66 in this video she sings the hello outta this song with so emotion its heartbreaking, I would much rather listen to her sing with emotion than a much younger person who might not understand the character or emotion, but sing it because they have a young strong voice

I'm guessing that people are forgetting that her husband was killed in a helicopter crash when he was young. Isn't it just possible that this song reminds her of how desperately widows miss their husbands. I know that's what this song reminds me of, I lost mine in 2018 at a young age.

Not so gorgeous here unfortunately. But no one can sing forever...she's had an amazing run.
@JudyCZ3 жыл бұрын
I have the same problem but it's probably mainly due to watchin Marin Mazzie's version too many times as well. What I liked about that version a bit more is the illusion at the beginning that it's a positive song and only towards the middle Marin lets in the frustration. But it's like comparing two diamonds...
@TimeIdle2 жыл бұрын
@@JudyCZ - Marin's version's arc was brilliant. The build from joy to devastation was incremental and breathtaking. But since she sang the song in isolation and not in the context of the scene of Follies, she had the free reign of interpretation. What I love about that performance was also watching Bernadette sitting there riveted by Marin's performance.
@bolandwoodworking84672 жыл бұрын

An absolutely masterful performance. It’s a masterclass from the premiere Sondheim interpreter. The song is tender when it needs to be and on the verge of madness in others… exactly what the song conveys. A perfect vocal? In the context of the show, it’s not going to be either.

I'm a massive Bernadette Peters fan but even in context with the song and the character - her voice is all over the place here. I understand people that think this is "an actors song", but all good singers must be good actors (That's not optional, and if the things are different today USA is to blame, since all that play in the radio is imported by u guys). About her voice, it as NEVER technically good in a conventional way because United States theater singers care more about the acting stuff (Wich is also not very good in the long run).

Who the hell do you consider "special?" This woman is one of the best singers of this genre I have ever heard. Here, she's in her 60s and still puts a song across as few others. Yes, there are a few problems, but singers today in their 30s couldn't do this well. She's a pro, a multi-talented star.
