She recorded only the first part live. The chorus (for some strange reason) was taken from the previously recorded album "My name is Barbra" (1965). Compare the two chorus versions. They are identical, only that a richer orchestration was added in for the movie.

It’s half live sadly, really wish she had performed the second half live as the first half while she’s crying is so moving. I understand it would be hard to move into ‘pretty sounds’ after giving such a raw performance of crying, so understand why the second half is mimed to her pre-recording but we should be honest too and say it’s ‘half live’.

This closing scene of the movie clinched her Oscar win. For all the other reasons the Academy loved it, the Academy has always prized an ability to cry actual tears, on camera. These days, it's almost a lost part of the art of acting.

@@pamelacolletti8553 My Man was not in the original Broadway version of Funny Girl., which is why the song isn’t in the current version of the Broadway musical. The song was so personal to Fanny Brice, as it describes her love and devotion to her real life husband, Nick Arnstein. Since Fanny owned the song, Funny Girl producer Ray Stark (Fanny’s son-in-law) was not allowed to use the song while Fanny was alive, as Fanny simply would not allow the use of the song to anybody for any reason. It is scenes like this that demonstrate why Streisand is a legend. At the AFI Awards, she explained that she recorded the complete song a month or so before filming, same as virtually all Hollywood musicals, and everyone liked it……except HER! She felt that it needed to be done live for emotional effect. The first part is sung live, the second part is lipsynched to the tape from the movie-score sessions. It was definitely not taken from her older My Name is Barbra record! Her voice had matured somewhat in those three years, and she’s ahead of the beat in the earlier version, consistently on-the-beat in the movie version. Either way, it’s an extraordinary moment from a unique performer with a legendary voice.

@@sobebenjSo now that you’ve read her memoirs, you’ll know that the second part was pre-recorded, with Walter Scharf (the film’s conductor) a month before filming began. They certainly did NOT use an older recording for the picture. I don’t know how the rumors get started.

I love how subtle but how profound her transformation is from where she started. It's not the ugly duckling turned into a swan, it's the ugly duckling SEEING ITSELF as a swan. The way she holds herself, the more delicate make up and hairstyle and jewelery, not because times are changing which is true, but because she doesn't need to hide herself anymore. The color black not because she's grieving for the life she's lost but because black is quiet, and she no longer needs to be loud to make people listen to her. She's a mom now, she knows that this is the greatest act she'll ever perform, nothing that being on stage can ever come close to. That's what makes this moment so moving and why this movie is close to perfection. A stunning song and a fucking stunning woman, wow.

What a gift her talent has been for the world! She has a natural talent. There are only a handful of singers who can do that.

Luckily I don’t follow much of todays music. But I know one singer who can be almost iconic as Barbra. Idina Menzel

I like how more than half the song is fairly weak vocally but acted impeccably, because it shows the vulnerability through the weakness, but then come 1:27, the strength returns, as the vocals build and burst into assuring triumph of her feelings.

WOW 👌👏 You've had to have felt real heartache to put THIS amount of emotions in a song. I'm completely mesmerised by this amazing woman. She could sing the telephone directory and I'd still be enchanted with her unbelievable voice 😍 ✨️ ❤

This is the single greatest vocal performance in any film and perhaps Streisand's greatest recorded performance ever. We can say that now, over 50 years after it was recorded, and it will be said another 50 years from now.

This is when my admiration grew like A wall of the Most Brethtaking Rose's, it's strange but I first saw you in Hello Dolly, I was six years old and, I even remember the Movie Palace in Washington DC, where my Uncle had taken me on A Friday Evening Performance The RKO Keith Theater, it was so elegant, it was one year later that my Belved Cousin Roberta introduced to me to all of your Music she had on Record Album's her stero was in her Bedroom and we would stay up all hours playing all of your records and sometimes we would also play with your records Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Johnny Mathis, the very first time I saw you in Funny Girl I was eight years old, and when I was nine years old I saw you in On A Clear Day, The First time I heard you sing those hunting words of that song I broke out crying and said in the darkened Uptown Theater she understands how I feel, you have been A part of my life, I am also honored that when Prisedent Clinton was in Office, I saw you at the Old Capital Center I was their 4 Diffrent shows, it was like being in Heaven.
