From Wikipedia: ""Waiting for the Robert E. Lee" is an American popular song written in 1912, with music by Lewis F. Muir and lyrics by L. Wolfe Gilbert. The "Robert E. Lee" in the title refers to the steamboat of that name." Just curious, at first I thought it was a Stephen Foster song,,,,

Is it just me or does Bernadette Peters remind you of Anissa Jones from family affair? 🤔

Hmmm. The performers all seem kind of tentative to me; some of them even uncomfortable. Maybe the number needed some more rehearsal?

Jolson sung it so much better. Not even in the same river.

The song is about a Riverboat called the Robert E Lee? It was the boat that won the Great Riverboat Race of 1870.

A great entertainer.. but not a great singer. Her voice is like one of the dozens of girls who just barely outgrew the "Annie" role and wanted to parlay their success into something a bit bigger. Can't fault the girl for making a living though.

She's actually a classically trained soprano or mezzo-soprano. My own voice teacher told me that.
@akrenwinkle4 жыл бұрын
@@detectivefiction3701 I've always liked Bernadette, but her voice is as operatic as Louis Armstrong.
@Stu2284 жыл бұрын
@@akrenwinkle Listen to her sing some more serious songs. Her high range was quite good in the late 80's into the 90's. It's her lower range that tends to be more brash.
@akrenwinkle4 жыл бұрын
@@Stu228 I liked her. She was what the TV variety hosts called a "song stylist." A lot of girls could sing, but the ones who went to the top made a song their own, not because of range, power, or beauty of voice. Eydie Gorme, for example, whom I loved, was often off-key. But who cared?

I have a hard time processing that assessment while listening to her sing the score to Sunday in the Park with George. That’s some impressive singing.

Not great to glorify Robert E Lee, who fought FOR SLAVERY. This song needs to be retired forever. Usually in these clips, at least one of the background dancers is black... I'm glad to say no one degraded themselves to that level. I adore Bernadette Peters, and I forgive her for doing this so many years ago... I'm certain she would have the sense to know not to do it ever again. Slavery was wrong. Robert E Lee was an enemy just like Hitler.

Why can't we retire social justice warriors like YOU? You people are finding fault with everything in life and making political issues where none should exist. You would do well to do ALL of your homework and understand that the Civil War was not all about slavery. This song, by the way, is from 1912, well after slavery ended and merely glorifies the STEAMBOAT Robert E. Lee. YOU ARE ONE OF THE TRUEST ENEMIES! It degrades us to listen to people like you. It degrades us to let people like you rewrite history and delete all parts YOU think are offensive. WE NEED TO DELETE YOU!

Any country in this world has songs made during a period, which you do probably not like. But they may be beautiful tunes - like 'Waiting for the Robert E. Lee.' Why not wait for a steamer while people are singing. There is nothing wrong about it, it is a tune from the Southern States. I.e. part of American history. Maybe you know the the tune 'Lilly Marleen'. It has become known during the Nazi period in Germany, yet it is a nice tune with lyrics in many different languages.

@@baeidanaan2704 Yes, I'll cry over it... and you can cry every time they tear down one of his statues in a southern state, of your hero: the guy who fought for slavery. You really love him, don't you.
