Thank you for these tuts. I'm planting my first craft gourds this year and I had no idea of the safety precautions involved in drying and cleaning them!

Hi, I'm Michael Clayton in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Just found your channel and subscribed. Planted birdhouse gourds last year. They went wild. I'm going to make some bird houses and decorated bowls. I would like to raise miniature gourds this year if i can find the seeds.I hope you are still making new videos. Thank you, Michael.

I do hope to get back into it sooner than later! I am eager to restart although I may be doing more gardening videos than gourds right now but we'll see!

Thank you Bernadette. This is a great start to My Gourd mask making efforts. Have you ever tried cleaning out the gourd when green and adding rubbing alcohol to help dry it quicker? I want to replant the seeds so I wouldn't just drill a hole and add alcohol. any thoughts?

Do you have to cut a hole into them? These are great BTW thank you
@BernadetteGourder3 жыл бұрын
You can keep gourds whole without cutting into them. You need to make though that it is a completely dried gourd and doesn't have recurring mold on the surface. This recurring mold is a sign that the interior is not fully dried and you would need to open it up and let it completely dry.

Good Video. Would love to know what brand of electric saw you were using. What is it called and where to get one.

How do you clean the inside of the gourd if you can only make a small hole?
@BernadetteGourder3 жыл бұрын
There are special long handled scraper tools you can use. I got mine from arizonagourds.com I believe. A drill with a scouring pad on the end works as well.

Shore am ,o by the way i usta speed up the drying process by throwing gourds in the deep freeze for about a mounth then id let them thaw out in the fridge but this year im letting them sit on the vine till winter is over an will see how thy turn out

What types of gourds do you work with? Do you have any calabash?
@BernadetteGourder10 жыл бұрын
I work with all sorts of shapes of the green gourd, Lagenaria siceraria. Calabash is often used as a general term for the green gourd.

You said suggested some great safety precautions & safety materials & said “SAFETY COMES FIRST” then you proceeded to saw a gourd directly on your lap, no thick apron or anything & towards your “ungloved” hand & using an “electric saw?!? I was waiting for something bad to happen & for blood to splatter the camera lens!! Please use a work bench or a table to place your projects on or at least place a cutting board on your lap & wear kevlar gloves so you won’t lose a finger or two or sever an artery. Were you even wearing the safety glasses or mask? SMDH 😖

I agree that many saws are dangerous in unskilled hands! However, in the video I was wearing a thick apron, I am very skilled with what I do, and I was using a very low risk jig saw that is operated with a foot pedal. It would pose minimal risk to even an untrained person.
