Bernal Heights Hill - Rare Historical footage - San Francisco, 1971

Bernal Heights, known for its diversity and history of community activism, is a residential neighborhood in southeastern San Francisco. Bernal Heights was a hotbed of leftist radicalism during the 1970s, and for a time the home at 288 Precita Street was used as a safehouse by the Symbionese Liberation Army.
During their years living in a half sized school bus traveling the USA documenting the emerging consciousness of the 1970s, Dean and Dudley visited Bernal Heights and videoed the thriving community. In this video you will see very rare footage of the colorful, and vibrant life, including a group of dirt bikes roaring up and down and around the iconic Bernal Heights hill.

Oh wow, I didn't see the beginning of this film. Those clear, round, plastic knockers on ropes. I remember in the early 1970's some of the kids at my grammar school would have those. I would not have remembered if I did not see this film. Thankyou for posting. I also notice today there are no longer gas tanks and smoke stack chimney on Potrero hill.

Totally cool. Dirt bikers riding on Burnal Heights filmed with 1971 Video tape technology. There is no Transamerica Pyramid building in the skyline which was not completed until 1972. In 1998 they removed the long distance, Bell Telephone microwave horns used from the tower at the top of Burnal Heights shown in this film because of Satellite technology and everyone has a cell phone.

I was rode those trails on my single speed homemade Schwinn chopper 🫣 Easy Ride inspired, Evel Knievel driven. 🚴🏽‍♂️🌪️

I lived on Folsom St then later Alabama St. Right down the hill from Bernal Heights. Moved out there in '73. By that time that area where those kids were riding was closed down. Even though my friends and I would ride our bmx bikes on those same trails. Crashed and burned a few times, just pick yourself up dust off and go again. At that the time of the film we go visit my mother's family who lived in that area ( Costa and Brewster) and my older cousin would ride his little honda ct70 (couple in the film) up there and me and younger cousin stood around and watched. Great memories!

The four African American youth are Andre Day, Cardy Dunn, Ronald Hamlet (my brother). Not sure who the other guy is!

Amazing footage! I remember seeing that tower when I was a kid. I thought it looked like ship sails. I think it's an old microwave tower. What hill is that?

Being up, there was the best times of my life just ride the whole hill that’s when like movies came out on any Sunday Evel Knievel was big super Joe be up there every day. I see a longtime friend in there Dave wonder what he’s up to my little brother was up there on his little Honda 70 just riding around .
