Met this guy one day. I also spent years in prison and got my shit together, so I told him I got a past somewhat similar to his. Immediately he turned to me and I think understood what I meant by that and said “say no more.” Then he just gave me like a lecture and inspiration for the next couple of mins. He told me to not forget we are in a fight with our past everyday. He came off as a very very humble man.

I had a friend who’s parents were pretty well off and we all went to church together. One day he’s just randomly like u wanna see if B hop is home? I’m like fuck u talking about … we walk around the corner and he knocks on his door. Bhop knew him cuz his dad was our pastor. Ill never forgot that day until I die. He took us in his basement where he had a gym, this wild ass trophy case and he just sat there and played video games with us for like two hours. When we left out of his garage to head back he had two of the biggest dogs I ever seen. Such a humble dude. That’s Bhop for making a life long memory to a poor kid growing up in Wilmington DE

I interviewed Hopkins for CBS before the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight. Never spoke to an athlete who was more candid, intelligent, or generous with his time. He promised 20 minutes and we spoke for two hours while he drove from Long Island to Philadelphia.

Before MMA, boxing was the premium combat sport and the world stopped to watch title bouts. During that time, Hopkins was one of the elite boxers and it was exciting to watch him in the ring. He was a true champion and gave us some of the best fights that the sport has ever seen.

@@mrsugar2352 idk, in terms of popularity, back in Hopkins day everyone watched boxing and boxers were national celebrities and heroes. It's just not the case anymore. I mean on Saturday and Sunday afternoons there were boxing matches all over tv. Then of coarse there were the big bouts that we all watched with anticipation. Boxing doesn't have that draw since MMA became so huge. I wish it would go back to the way it was but it will take charismatic fighters of a caliber that I'm not sure even exist anymore.

Texas Prisons don't have AC and they weren't running Recreation. We were stuck in a steel building with cattle fans , only time we left was medical, education, and chow. Some people didn't have a mattress, they slept on the steel. People were fighting over lumpy mats. No cleaning supplies. Half the toilets were shut down This was Huntsville TX Holiday Unit 2021! I'm surprised it's not shut down.

Felix Trinidad fight was a shocker for everybody that watched it. And the crazy thing is Bernard Hopkins said he watched Felix's feet for most of the match and knew what the boy was going to do. If you box it makes a lot of sense. But it's just something that the average person doesn't think to do. I don't know what happened to Felix Trinidad career after that fight but it almost seemed like it went down the hill. I don't remember the boy after that. But he was a fantastic talent at the time.

I recall some boxing commentator/writer/journalist saying that Bernard Hopkins is the most-disciplined person, they've ever met. It was either Steve Kim or Dan Rafael, I think. They said that Hopkins has not eaten any sweets, in decades. Literally, not a single cookie, not a bite of of ice cream, no birthday cakes, no deserts, for multiple decades. It would seem that he is as serious as they come, with regards to paying attention to what he eats and taking care of his physical health. Powerful proof that your diet choices are profoundly important. And we should let this be a lesson to us all.

I think we key thing is that if a young guy goes to jail and he has good morals or some kinda mentality to be better, he can take better advantage of that whole jail life but older dudes with an ego with little or no self accountability become worse. Speaking from personal experience of my dad going in and coming out a total psychopath, but he always was one , the prison just made it more visible.

hopkins is one of the best.... won a ton of money betting on him against pavalik.....told all my friends hopkins was all wrong for him but they didn't listen....only time i ever bet irresponsibly and hops did exactly what i thought he would. that was agood day thanks x

Hopkins was a beast i remember when he fought Trinidad and in a face off he disrespected Trinidad by taking the little puerto rican flag he was waving in his face and Hopkins snatched it out his hand and threw it on the floor. I remember puerto ricans being pissed fighting with blacks over this in my town. Once he stepped in the ring he dominated Trinidad like Crawford did to Spence. He was just different.

Kudos to B-Hop and all his knowledge and wisdom, both hard earned. I found his stories of training discipline very inspiring as an amatuer boxer. His weight class jump interview was awesome, "I get to eat TWO slices of toast for breakfast!" You gotta be extremely self disciplined to get that exited for a slice of toast. That was so awesome! Kudos to Rogan for letting B-Hop just roll with the conversation. I know he's grown as an interviewer to where he sits now, top of the heap, and that was a skill that he's talked about, and something I appreciate as a consumer of this kind of content. Great work! Keep it up.
