First of a series of 3 seminars where Bernard covers the Losing Trick Count very thoroughly (as well as other material). They progress from basic counting of losers here to practical application in session 11 and important refinements in session 12.

When your partner opens a suit and you have 4 cards and therefore a match , we were originally taught to reply two of the suit with 6-9 points, 11-12 would reply 3 of the suit and game if 13+ points. As we progressed further we learnt about the losing trick count. Which one should we be using and why? Do you use the suit quality test when deciding whether to overcall?

Hi Bernard. Loving the talks. Plz explain the quiz. 1H - 1 S - 2NT - now, if east had responded with 6pts and five spades, and had just 3 hearts, then surely the 3H response to 2NT would say “I don’t think 2NT is a good place to be and so I think I’d rather we were in 3H, even if it’s a 3-4 fit, as my hand is unbalanced and poor”. So, as I see it, 3H isn’t forcing and responder could pass. You seem to suggest that a suit response of the 2NT is forcing. I do hope I’ve explained myself!

If you are so weak that you think game is beyond you, then you pass 2NT, although this will be rare. There is no reason to think 3H will be better, when much of the time partner will have just 4 hearts and it is important that continuations over 2NT are forcing to give you flexibility
