Great video. I've owned and lived with dogs for 60+ years and 7 years ago got my first Pyrenees. Oh boy! What a surprise. Everything you said in your video is spot on. Except, you didn't mention the slobber :-). They drool a lot. They're very independent and think for themselves and act according to their own decision which only sometimes coincides with their owner's decision. You don't really own a Pyr - you kind of partner with one. :-). Except for the vet bills. You own those. Good job though - keep 'em coming - thank you!

Good point! All pyr owners, including me, understand that very generous word: independent! All commands come with at least a 30 second waiting period just for them to make a decision to obey or not! Add more time for the actual movement. Or non-movement! Patience is a virtue with a Pyr

So happy to hear about the Pyrenees on this this channel. I own 2 Great Pyrenees and they are wonderful dogs. We have no livestock so they think of us as what they are protecting. My big male, Groot, has an extremely loud booming bark and they are constantly watching out for coyotes, bobcats etc. also they let you know if someone is messing around on your property as they’re constantly alert ! All you said on the GP was 100 % correct. they will take action independently if they think the situation calls for it. Extremely loving family dogs when there is nothing threatening. Thanks for putting them in a video. J

Agreed! I have a Pyrenees in the city. I find it amazing how this breed is born already knowing how to protect in that distinctively 'livestock guardian' way. I always feel safe no matter the situation as long as she's nearby. When I take her to the off-leash dog park, she is always aware of where I am and stays within protection limits. She doesn't look like she's paying attention to anything at all. But she is hyper-aware of absolutely everything around her. So amazing!

i have a pyrenees that was abandoned on my property at about three months old. the only complaint i have is the barking, she's about seven months old now and she has fully adopted me. she's a great dog and she has decided that she is my universe. only drools right after drinking water. and she is going to be one of the very big ones, to date she weighs 90 pounds, when she climbs in your lap you know she's there. she also likes napping on my feet.

You are so fortunate to have an owner like that. LOL I often believe our Pyrenees believes she takes care of us. They do not mature until they are about two years of age. She is going to be huge ! Our Pyrenees is 8 years old and has never weighed over 75 lbs.. She was the runt of the litter and is still a lot of dog. I am so happy for you.

@@carlabunn1134 My Female is suspected to be either the runt or 2nd smallest of all her litter mates. She’s a purebred Pyr but surprisingly only around 60-70 pounds at exactly 2 years of age as of last week! I’m honestly ecstatic about it, I think she’s the perfect size, not too overwhelming when she decides to do one of her go-to favorite hobbies, crashing down to lay on top of me haha 😂. Glad to hear someone else is loving a runt Pyr like me!!

Well done! I have a Pyrenees companion in the city. A rescue who's first year of life, sadly, was not a good one. Making her unfit as a working or country dog. But this breed, in any state of mind, is not a dog for a beginner. They are truly amazing in the way that they think. Very different than most breeds. And require a strong and knowledgeable owner. You're right about them being mellow but when a job needs to get done...no hesitation whatsoever!! It can be quite alarming actually! If a dog approaches her, whether she's on leash or not, that dog better be graceful and socially acceptable in their approach or they will regret it immediately! They know just how much pressure to apply for any given situation. Certainly they can kill a dog or other threat almost immediately, yet they rarely do. Another thing I noticed that is quite striking is the bark! The bark of a Pyrenees is serious! It's loud enough to pop your eardrum if one happens to be in the same room. The sound is deep and can be heard from very far away. I've been taken off-guard many times with that lightening-quick bark coming from a dead sleep out of nowhere. Their hearing is amazing! I swear she can hear a pin drop in China! I always feel safe with my Pyrenees. The best alarm and security system out there! The only other dog I'd trade her for is a Bernie!

We've adopted both multiple Bernese and Great Pyreneese rescues and have found them to make an amazing pairing. The Berners tend to be more eager to please, exuberant, and attached to "its" people. While the Great Pyr's tend to be more laid back. When it comes to perceived threats though, the roles kind of switch. The Pyr will alert well in advance compared to the Berners. The Pyr's also tend to be the Boss while the Berners kind of go along for the ride. And they really seem to bond well with each other.

I'm a cow dog guy. I've raised a pyrenees to 8 months old now. I love her and find her agrivating too after a lifetime of raising border collies, healers and Australian shepherds. They look you in they eye and listen for directions.

Owemylife, we have a Great Pyrenees and she is very intelligent but if does not think want is important she simply turns her continues panting and drooling. It can be aggravating but then I to remember this is how the breed was designed. They were originally bred to stay with the sheep and lead them around to feed. They led from trust and familiarization. They grow up with the sheep. The cow dog breeds use intimidating tactics ordered by their master. They are bred to love pleasing their master. Great Pyrenees were bred to make decisions on it’s own on a daily basis. That is why I think of my dog as a best friend and accept her sense of self confidence as well. : )

Good review. Our great pyrenese came to the defense of my wife when a tradesman became abusive to her. She handled the situation very well indeed. However, she has eaten several pieces of furniture. They have an amazing bite force and their hear is very thick around their throat, almost like a mane. Most of what was said here was spot on especially the part about guarding our perimeter. Woe betide the coyote that tries to enter our yard.

Loved this video, mostly because we have a cross of a Bernie and Pyrenees…and I can see all of these traits in my one dog. He can be a handful in how stubborn he is and really has no desire to listen to me ever, but at almost a year old he’s slowly getting there and is starting to follow commands. We love these breeds they are amazing with my children, especially our toddler.
@Yosetime
@Yosetime Жыл бұрын
Don't stress out much about them not following commands. These giant breeds don't mature until age 3. So yours is still a puppy. And Pyr's never really get good at following commands. They really are very independent. But at the same time, they know what they are doing so you don't have to overprotect them or give them many commands in the first place. They learn best by experience over time. Be a strong leader, but don't worry about obeying commands too much with this breed. They are not cut out for obedience training, for sure! Good luck!

i love bernese dogs, theyre a very unique and special breed. I DO believe that a great p would be more suited for us as we have 16 cats. we have a pretty good size area and myself and my husband are both at home all day every day, therefore our attention would be constant. I would of course prefer to rescue, however having a puppy introduced to the cat family would be a better idea for them. May i ask your advice on any breeders in the UK if you know of any. we would be so grateful for any direction xx

I hope you had your questions answered. I have a pyr who will kill a cat instantly but do know that most pyr's will accept cats, and just about any other animal, as a companion. They have zero prey drive and no interest in chasing anything beyond a few feet, if any. But still, it depends on an individual dog's temperament and experiences. Also, a pyr requires less physical interaction or supervision. They basically are willing and capable of living daily life with minimal direction from humans, depending on how they are raised of course.

They prefer to conserve their energy for when it's needed. Especially during the day they're not very active, and unless you keep her/him on a leash, they may take off to explore and safety-check their surroundings. They're not known for quick recall, preferring to make their own decisions.

Ent le buch er is pronounced "Ent' • lə • boook' • ər", with the Os being pronounced like the double-O as in "Boo", but just pronouncing "book" is generally acceptable. "Entəl-bookər" is also accepted by the ignorant of the etymology of the name,, but never should "Entel-butcher" pass the lips without correction. The name comes from a split of the rivers Grosse and Kleine Entle. I guess they thought the area looked like an open book, for the word spelled b u c h means, you guessed it: book. The word Entlebucher means "from Entlebuch [region]", the same as Rottweiler means "from Rottweil", a settlement known as "the Red Village" (rott =red; veil = village), so-called for its striking red roofs, before it actually had a name, or a name that travelers knew as they may have only passed by.

I hope you have not obtained a Great Pyrenees. These are large dogs and usually it is recommended that you have a very large yard at least. The Great Pyrenees will most likely not play but will tolerate all the abuse children can dole out, if that does not bother you. This breed has a huge bark and it will bark a lot. I do not know about other breeds but please remember all dogs deserve to go to a loving environment and not be viewed as a tolerant punching bag.

Our Pyr Kylo is always on alert. Can get a bit annoying with the barking , however he is certain all delivery people are coming to murder us, the squirrel running across the lawn is crazed and coming to rip out our eyeballs and the acorns falling from our trees are deadly missiles. He is very gentle with family, including our cats. Great breed of dog but not a real playful one. Does not understand concept of toys. Guess he is too serious for frivolity.
