I still don't get where all that money went. $50 BILLION dollars. Where did it go? Even Madhoff couldn't spend all that money no matter how many yachts and apartments he owned.
@frankdenardo86843 жыл бұрын
He also bought airplanes, yachts, cars, jewelery.
@marquettegloves99073 жыл бұрын
He took a cut, and probably spent a few hundred million. But he never had the 50 billion to spend as he had to use the funds to pay off his investors when they withdrew their money. And because he was creating fake profits of around 20% a year, most of the money got dwindled down by the lucky few who withdrew their money with the fake profits included. He was just moving one investors money around to pay off another who withdrew, and losing even more than they put in because of the so called profits each year. The well ran dry and that's why at the end he was desperately looking for new investors as he had run out of money. It wasn't his spending habits that sunk the ship, it was his I'm a stock market genius who guarantees big returns that did. Crazy story.

@@frankdenardo8684 100%. He was a fascinating character. He literally wrecked himself and his own family, along with many of the victims of his fraud. Yet he seemed to not be too bothered about it all. It was strange. Obviously he died in April, but it would be interesting to know if he was able to live his life again, whether he would want to do it the same all over again. A normal person like you or me would say no, but with Bernie Madoff I'm not so sure lol.

It wasnt close to that number, $50 billion is what all the customers thought they had with the fake interest he told them they had. Still probably was 25 to 30 Billion which is a ton, but he paid all those employees for all those years giving bonuses including all those possessions talked in the above comments and one night parties that cost probably more then a huge house.

In retrospective there is something humorous about Bernie Madoff and his whole scheme and how all these greedy people, some of them super rich just fell for it as long as the invoices (or whatever) with higher than invested amounts kept coming in... i would love to have lived in this apartment precisely because of its atmosphere and "energy-memory"; reckless, daring, high-flying, not giving a flying f*, again funny, intelligent, but also decent as his sons were and lots of memories of a good and happy life in the higher stratosphere... the victims are being compensated and that is that.... and a lot of them were probably paying their taxes in the Caribbean islands if you know what I mean...
