Homerun with the hat Bernie! If Goldy is only average, his glove elevates that whole infield. When Goldy comes out of his Spring slump it always begins with him hitting to right. It will be fascinated to see him in that lineup. He still has the ability to carry a team for a week or two and will be a contributor to the Yankees' , certainly surpassing Joe Pepitone. Thanks for putting into perspective what the Cardinals will be missing.

Solid points on Goldschmidt, Bernie. However, you did not mention the most interesting part of Denton's quote, which was that Arenado will not approve a deal anywhere “until the Dodgers tell him no to his face.” Given all the trade related information Joel Wolfe has put into the public domain recently, this quote, while not specifically attributed to Wolfe like many others, is hard to square with prior statements. I mean all these contradictory statements have to be coming from somewhere, and candidly they all appear strongly tied to the Arenado camp or sources close to him, not the team. It is an increasingly bizarre situation with almost daily contradictions that appears to have come full circle now like a Monty Python sketch. Joel Wolfe and the Arenado camp originally said that the list of teams he would go to was big, much bigger than in Colorado. They said that winning was the most important thing. They then followed with a 6 team list, which included a non-competitive Angels team, which was very odd, but not initially disputed by Wolfe. They then blocked a trade to a very competitive Astros team. After which they put out that he does not have a specific list of teams. Even though Katie Woo, Denton, and other national writers dispute this. Just look at Katie Woo's podcast on "Foul Territory" a few days ago, where she triples down, and states the Arenado did in fact give the Cardinals a list of teams. Then of course we recently got the Dodger's quote, which again has not been disputed by Wolfe. Meaning we appear to be right back to a CO situation, by which he is fixated on 1 team, despite all the posturing. Having followed this industry for a long, long time, it appears that Arenado does not know what Arenado wants, and may find himself, similar to some players last season, without a team when the music stops. As I have stated before, bringing him back to spring training as a Cardinal after all of this mess, while not impossible, just seems improbable for an organization that is trying to go young, and turn the page with a new management team. Which makes you wonder where this leaves Arenado, and whether all this sloppiness will materially affect interested teams from pursuing a trade or whether the Cardinals will ultimately be forced to turn the page by releasing him.

Why isn’t Jim Edmonds in the HOF? 903 career OPS. He’s got the ring. Played a prime position and won multiple gold gloves. I would think he would be a lock for the hall.
@phenom5683 күн бұрын
This is an excellent question. At first glance I have to say its his WAR which is 60.4. Typically HOF is around 70+. But what I find odd about this is his OPS+ which was 132 for his career. And impressively his final season he had a 125 OPS+. Most confusingly is 2008 where he had just .1 WAR for the season despite having a 112 OPS+. So it must be his defensive metrics pulling down his WAR in 2008. Which is really hard to understand given how brilliant he was in the field. So I don't really understand why is WAR is so low and I suspect that's why he's not in the HOF.
@TheBernieShow3 күн бұрын
Preaching to the choir. His Hall of Fame credentials grow stronger with time.
@DustinWinter-x7h2 күн бұрын
@@phenom568 You are correct both on the WAR numbers and defensive metrics dragging him down. He was a -2 DRS in 2006, -3 DRS in 2007, and -15 DRS in 2008, largely because he just played way, way to shallow for modern advanced defensive metrics. For example, he was a -54 on deep balls via DRS between 2003 and 2010 while at the same time printing a +67 on shallow balls. However, the way advanced defensive metrics are calculated in the modern game CF's get slammed on the deep ball metrics because any ball over their head is multiple bases and likely multiple runs where as being positive on shallow balls is good because it turns singles into outs and occasionally saves runs, but NOT as good as being positive on deep balls because none of algorithms like to trade shallow balls for deep balls delta wise as far as runs saved and optimal route characteristics. He also historically scored very low numbers for arm strength and medium range balls, and overall from a WAR calculation really got hit hard during his career on the defensive side. Just look at his CF DRS numbers while with the Cardinals and it jumps off the page. He was the 16th DRS scored CF in MLB in 2004, 17th in 2005, 24th in 2006, 26th in 2007, and 34th in 2008. I mean he never scored in the top 1/3 of the league ever as a Cardinal. This is not good and certainly hurts his total career WAR print. Many will say that this is unfair, and the he was a much better CF than what the historical advanced numbers indicate. I tend to agree with this having watched him play more than 500 games. I also think that in the modern game he would be playing at least 10 to 15 feet deeper always compared to his historical set up, which over the term would of really increased his proficiency on the deep ball and given him much better route and range characteristics since it is always easier to move laterally than backwards and laterally. Hard to say, but given his extreme athleticism and ability to go get the ball in space a simple 10 to 15 foot adjustment perhaps would of made him a DRS star in hindsight. That said, even loving Jimmy, I suspect he should be in the Hall of Very Good, not the Hall of Fame. I say this even as a "big" hall proponent. Merry Xmas!!

@DustinWinter-x7h thanks that great. Definitely feels like the defense metrics are not matching the eye test.

Goldie will probably find success in NY. As you said it is a super friendly hitters park. Goldie will also be able to blend into the background, as Judge, Stanton (if healthy) Belanger, Volpe, Cole, Fried, are the stars. He can go about his business, hit well in that park and play good defense. Good move for NYY. Aranado seems like he is ruining any positive reputation he had around the league. At this point MO needs to find any trade for him. The teams that would want him seem to be more hesitant to make a deal. I know baseball is a team sport, but that stat about him having lost more games than any other player since he came into the league is eye opening. Some guys are super talented, they just don’t win, Mike Trout being another example. Classic case of addition by subtraction. Hope it happens soon.

Goldy's final 3 months last season was his excitement of the possibility to being traded to a real contender and/or his audition for free agency. Your play is elevated when you're playing with or have the chance to play with a good team. The opposite is true when you realize the organization you're playing for is using a much different formula. The only thing I wonder about Goldy is his adjustment to new pitching in a different league. In the scheme of everyone pointing fingers at Arenado and Goldy, you can have the best corner men in the game, but you're not going to be a serious contender for a ring being weak up the middle like the Cardinals have been for about a decade.

I have a crazy idea: why don’t you hire a manager to be that leader instead of tying up roster spots searching for it?
@TheBernieShow3 күн бұрын
I don’t understand your idea. There has never been a manager in MLB that hasn’t empowered players to be leaders in their own clubhouse. Yeah, when Whitey and TLR. The smart managers understand the importance of players hold each other accountable - and it’s an effective form of leadership. But I get it. You dislike Marmol. That’s fine with me. But I don’t have to agree with your idea. I guess based on your definition of leadership, TLR and Herzog were wimps because they wanted players to police the clubhouse. Thank you and happy holidays.

Bernie, a question that I’ve had not heard anybody ask about the Cardinals and their problems is with Herrera being the number one pick to replace whomever at catcher how is it that no one knew that Herrera could not throw I just find it. I don’t know what do you use? What word to use But someone should have known before he comes up to the big league so he can’t throw and you have the best catcher maybe that ever caught on your roster and he did not work with Herrera and he should be the one working exclusively with Herrera and figuring out how to make his arm a little stronger if you recall Ozzie Smith had a problem with his arm and he made some changes and his arm was pass wasn’t what it was but it was possible and I believe that Cardinals can do that with Herrera.

The Cardinals didn’t have a catching instructor in the minors … which was a travesty. They did very little to help this kid improve in the minors … Molina was supposed to help in this area but never reported to work after the Cardinals announced his hiring last offseason. Such a dysfunctional franchise but things will change under Bloom … they’ve already hired a catching instructor to work with their minor-league catchers. Thanks for your comment and Merry Christmas to you.

Today’s video was 80 percent (at least) about Goldschmidt. I focus on news that is still playing out and unresolved. That would explain Arenado talk. But you don’t have to tell me any of this; Friday’s video was titled ARENADO FATIGUE which (as I said) applies to me as well. Which is why I didn’t have much to say about Arenado today. Which is why I’m a little surprised that you told me you didn’t care about Arenado and that you want me to come up with new material … surprised because I publicly indicated - all by myself - that I’m weary of Arenado stuff. But … you really think that Goldschmidt signing with the Yankees doesn’t warrant even a few minutes of discussing his obvious connection to Arenado and the impact the Goldy signing may have on Arenado’s status? Really? Come on. Thanks for letting me know how you feel and I appreciate the support.

@TheBernieShow3 күн бұрын
If you think so. I wouldn’t touch it. One thing I didn’t point out - my bad - was how Stroman collapsed late last season … and concerns over his pitching health. Flipping him is hardly a simple task. Teams are wary of him … which is why Cashman tried to sell the Cardinals on the idea … because the Yankees desperately want to dump his salary on another team. I could have explained all of that in better detail but I keep getting requests to do shorter videos so I’m trying to do shorter videos. That said, I am planning to start a membership program which KZbin offers and that way I can do longer videos exclusively for those who want them. The more I think about it - it just makes sense.
