+CIVINT I feel like this election is the first one where a third party candidate actually stands a chance, due to how hated Clinton and Trump are. The idea that voting for a third party is just throwing away your vote ensures that the system remains as it is. And I'm not so confident Hillary can win anymore. There's a new gaffe/scandal every week with her, and unlike with Trumps weekly goofs, her blunders actually hurt her. She picked a shitty time to get sick, considering the rumors that were going around about her health. How someone who is so qualified on paper (former First Lady, Senator AND Secretary of State!) could be doing so poorly against a joke like Trump is surreal, which is all the more reason to take a chance and go for actual change. And if Trump does win, at least it will be one hell of a ride. Like being tied to a neutron bomb and shot into a star that that's going supernova. Or we could get lucky and Trump will only nuke the southern hemisphere.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with what Sanders said... Most of you people bitching and moaning about him supporting the Democratic platform *wouldn't* *even* *know* *who* *he* *is* if it wasn't for the fact that he ran in the Democratic Primary. Sanders would not be where he is today if he didn't caucus with the Democrats and if he didn't run as a democrat. Sanders is coming from decades of experience, not 6 months of "feeling the Bern"
@nosavepoints8 жыл бұрын
You mention listening to Bernie because of decades of experience right? Guess what, with his experience he should know that the whole 'Democratic Platform' is just a piece of paper and there is no binding agreement that states that the elected Democrat officials have to follow it. Just like how the electoral college doesn't have to vote how the people do.
@oolong28 жыл бұрын
No Save Points He does know that, which is why he's asking for a movement day one to back it up and pressure the politicians at the local state and federal level to abide by the platform and go even further. What is your plan exactly? Bitch and moan? Throw away your vote? Because some people (like Sanders) actually want to fight to get these polices done.

Jimmy Dore is one of my favorite people alive today, period. I believe he's so important because few people I've ever seen have as much heart and courage. I do wish that he'd put down the stick sometimes in favor of the carrot. Maybe Clinton is ruthless, but she's playing a ruthless game against unscrupulous opposition, but I think behind every aggressive position or failed platform position, that she wants the best for America because that's the way that she will, and history will, define her by. I think some of her failings were due to party pressure to forcing bad decisions. I think some of her failings are due to corruption from top down that cripples some legislation. I think some of her failing are due to deliberate sabotage from oppositional groups. i think some of her failing are due to the inability to have a crystal ball and to correctly prognosticate how very dynamic situations will play themselves out when all the factors are in play. I think a lot of different things are probable, but I'm pretty certain she's trying to do whats best for the greatest number of Americans. peace and be well

listen tyt voting is not about choosing the lesser of two evils. if voting means anything at all it means choosing a representative of you. the president of the united states has to much power for you to be choosing between lesser evils. this man or woman gets to decide the definition of acceptable losses. Americans citizens owe it to everybody who will be effected by the leader of the strongest army in the world, to find someone who won't define innocent civilians and more importantly children as acceptable losses. trump obviously doesn't give a damn but if Hillary supports non defensive wars and is willing to lie to your face, then u need to find someone else for the job. you owe it to every body effected by America's forigen policy. which as u know is every one.

If Hillary cared about winning this election she would put more effort into listening to the people instead of listening to her donors. However, Trump picking supreme court justices does scare me...... We are in between a rock and a hard place here, and I think regardless of who wins, America is going to become a lot more violent than ever before after this election. One thing that shocked me the most about this election is the fact that when it came down to it, the Republican party listened to their voters and made Trump the nominee. However, the Democrats listened to their voters and their donors, and decided that the donors are more important than the people. That is absolutely un-democratic, and this election has become about the fact that people are sick of the democratic party. They are so corrupted that they are just as bad as the banks, and they need to be taken down.

I was a major Bernie supporter, now i am for Jill Stein, i still want to be for Bernie but can not follow his line of thought on this.... to vote for Hillary so Trump does not win, and focus on changing the Democratric to more Progressive, then where was Bernie when Tim Conova wanted his help. If Bernie wants us to follow then he has to lead by example and should have been fighting for those progressives now and not later. Because now we have to wait and in the mean time Hillary will have the back up in congress to do what she wants.... So no i will be voting Jill Stein... If Hillary wants to win she will have to earn this vote by becoming a real progressive herself which of course will never happen.

Gore literally won that election. The Republican controlled Supreme Court overturned the FL Supreme Courts ruling of a recount which would have proven Gore to have been the winner. You can look this up, Gore won the election.

He's right. It'd be totally different if Stein/Johnson were gaining traction and had a snow ball's chance in hell of getting elects, but they don't so third party IS a protest vote/wasted voted and will always be stupid.
@kthy00568 жыл бұрын
They didn't even have enough to get into the debates, and they needed a boost from the debates. If the polls were close, I would've considered voting for third party myself. But voting for a candidate that polls at 3% or at 9% is just throwing your vote away.
@dookdawg2148 жыл бұрын
Third parties don't gain rapid traction because of group-think bias. The only way to make them grow is to build their numbers little by little. They don't just one day lead the way. They have to rise to 10%. Then maybe 15% a few years later. Then 30% after a decade or so. That's how smaller parties gain traction -- over many years. It's unfortunate that the US only has one round of voting. In other countries -- France for instance -- you have two rounds. This allows voters to choose who they really want in the first round, and then they choose the best of the two remaining candidates in the second round. Such a system doesn't necessarily put smaller parties into power, but it does put more pressure on the main parties to listen to their voters. In 2002, the French protest-voted against the Socialist Party and the extreme-right-wing Front National won the first round. This led to the whole country coming together to vote for the moderate-right UMP and the Socialst Party was forced to rethink its platform.
@kthy00568 жыл бұрын
dookdawg214 We're not in France. In America every time a third party does well in one election, it gets less and less votes as time goes on. ex: Ted Roosevelt's progressive party, Eugene Debs's Socialist Party, Ross Perot's Reform Party, Nader after 2000. Group-think bias is not going to go away if a party doesn't have local and state-level succes. This is why Gary Johnson does a bit better than Jill Stein, he's slightly more popular because he used to be a governor. But until they start having governor seats within that party, and senators and representatives and mayors and prove that they can help the people, majority will not trust them. That's how the GOP elected Lincoln, by taking over the House of Representatives and Senate before winning the presidency.

How the hell are they supposed to get traction when assholes like you vote shame and comply to corrupt warmonhers?? The most ethical option is to vote third party.

The electoral college system does not institute a two-party system. There have been at least two elections where more than two candidates carried states and the winner still had a majority of the electoral vote. We almost had a third case in 1992.
@jedgarsquink8 жыл бұрын
It would be possible to amend the Constitution so that only a plurality of the electoral vote was required, or, say, a 40% plurality. (40% plurality is the threshold for victory in a North Carolina primary; if nobody gets that there's a top-two runoff.) That's a constitutional amendment that could actually pass and have a chance of being ratified.
@jedgarsquink8 жыл бұрын
If anything, the electoral college system is a big part of the reason it makes sense for alternative parties to run presidential candidates. It gives them a way to meet ballot access thresholds for the next election in many states, usually without any actual spoiler effect at all. This cannot be said of any other race.
@coinflipwolfe37348 жыл бұрын
Statistically speaking, the third party candidates could get a majority vote and still lose the electoral college. Barring the two non-winner-take-all states, (of course this is plain and simple a hypothetical), if the third party got 40% in each state, you could still have a democrat or a republican president based on the +20% of the population. (Someone correct me on my numbers if I'm wrong, I'm using this in my US History class and my economics.)
@jedgarsquink8 жыл бұрын
Bishop Dakota It is mathematically possible for the candidate with a popular vote majority or plurality to not win the electoral vote for a variety of reasons, under the current rules or those I'm suggesting. A 40% plurality means the largest number, and also at least 40% of total. In all states, under current rules, simple plurality carries for the presidential race. In Maine and Nebraska, this principle is applied by congressional district for all but two of the state's electors. A majority of electors is then required to win the electoral vote, under current rules. It is possible to get this by getting plurality victories in enough states to reach 270 electoral votes. In our last election with 3 strong candidates (1992), Clinton got 370 electoral votes with only 43% of the popular vote. Perot got 18.9% of the popular vote and no electoral votes. This illustrates the usual pattern that the candidate with the largest popular vote also wins the electoral vote, but the electoral vote margin of victory is much more exaggerated. If the rule were changed to 40% plurality in the electoral college, the threshold would be getting 216 electoral votes and also not having any other candidate get more than you do.

Thank you for your point on non-swing states. Here in Arkansas, any party who's Presidential candidate gets 3% of the state's vote, gets automatic ballot access for 2018, official party status as opposed to new party status, and a March 1st primary as opposed to picking candidates by convention in the October prior. These are big steps towards legitimacy for future elections, not only to the voting public, but to the quality of candidate you can appeal to.

But also Cenk doesn't want to take the risk, but this same pattern of choosing Left candidates who are moving the Democratic party to the Right is what got us here. Doing it again will not improve this. And Ben is WRONG. It happened with Abraham Lincoln. He made the Republican party permanently relevant. The Whigs were there before them but THEY stopped servign the people.
