My goodness, I am so in your debt! I just purchased a used Bernina 1090 on Facebook Marketplace. But I didn't get a manual with it and coming from only using a 10-year-old Brother purchased off of Amazon, I was not in my element at all. I watched your video twice and was able to thread it and then practiced away. Considering that this sewing machine wasn't well-maintained, it is amazing how beautiful the stitches are. Top and bobbin sides both are marvelous-looking stitches. This is what I have been missing for the past 10 years -- a sewing machine that I don't have to fight with. I mean, without playing around with tension or anything, I've had not one jam up or ugly stitch. I think I'm in love. I should get a tune up for it just to get us off to a good start. But thank you, thank you, thank you, for this wonderful video!

I just found a "George" up in a spare room of our family's old farmhouse. I knew there was a machine under a cover up there, but I figured it was likely a cheaper Singer machine based on who had been using it. To my surprise, Granny had thrown down some big bucks about 25-30 years ago on a Bernina 1080!

Thanks for the video. I collect European sewing machines and just scored this exact sewing machine for 10 bucks from a goodwill store. It came with the foot controller and like 6 of the presser feet. I am going to take it apart and clean lint and do a full lubrication. Cheers.

I bought my Bernina 1080 from a friend who’s mom had passed several years ago and I love it. But I have only used it for pretty basic sewing. I found a circular embroidery tool at the thrift and was looking how to use it. This ugh I haven’t found a tutorial on that, I did find your video during the search. I learned several new things about my machine! Thanks for that and I hope you will do a few more videos about it.

I continue to find eBay presser foots for my old 1080 and still love the machine even though it's over 25 years old. (They sold for about $1K back then.) Question: Have you ever tried the Bernina 130/705 H Wing Needle with an old 1080? I can't figure out which decorative stitch setting would possibly pair with it (to creative a hemstitch on things like the edges of dinner napkins) since there's no actual "box stitch" on that model. Thanks!

I sometimes need a camera-person. This video is an example of my requirement! 🤔🤪 I do not know why the "flower" stitch image degraded to such a degree! If you look at the front of the machine imagine shown elsewhere, you can see stitch #28.

Hi there! I would take my machine to a service center. Being an older Bernina, there may be parts available. I honestly don't know if that is something that can be replaced/repaired but I sure do hope so and that you are able to get yours up and running!

Goodness that is frustrating! I am in the middle of moving house and don't have access to "George" yet, but I suggest you check the hook part of the bobbin system (The part that holds the bobbin in the machine) for stray threads, lint, fabric, etc. If you don't see anything foreign in that area, your bobbin tension may be too tight. Try to pull the thread a little while holding the bobbin in your hand. If it is a struggle to pull, your bobbin tension is too tight and won't flow through the process. You can adjust it by carefully turning the little slotted screw on the bobbin. If you are unsure of this process, a sewing shop near you will likely offer assistance! I hope you are able to make adjustments soon so that you can sew!

I don't believe that the 1080 - Special has that adjustment feature. I would ask a qualified Bernina dealer and/or service center.

My husband bought me one of these NEW back in the 1990's. I live in a world of dust as well. This was perfect timing as I recently pulled this bad boy out to do some "simple" sewing. Nothing is ever easy with me, so I do have a question: I've rethreaded several times, according to my manual (astonishingly, I still have it). However, I can't seem to get the top thread tension right. It's too loose. Even with the upper tension wheel at 6. I'd love a video on how to fine tune tension issues.

I am so happy to hear I helped! I believe if your fabric is soft or thin, you may benefit from a stabilizer underneath to keep your buttonhole from distorting. If you have scraps to practice, you can place a clean piece of regular paper under your fabric to test with. Happy holidays!

@@ayadani961 There is a button with a U shape and an arrow on the right side pointing up. Press the button while the machine is in sewing mode ( foot down) and it will stitch in reverse if the machine is working as it should. 😊

My 1080 Special is 14" wide from the left to right across the front and back, 7" deep at the widest on the back where the power cord is located, 11.5" tall from the top to bottom, the arm opening is 8" from the front of the machine and the bed is 3". I have put a sketch up on my Community Tab.

Yes. Over on the top right side of the control panel on the front of the machine and located above the dial to control the width of your stitches, you will see a series of electronic dots located at the center, and two dots on the right and also on the left. There is a long, narrow push button on each side of the dots. Push the button on the right to move the needle to the right and push the button on the left to move the needle to the left. To move the needle back to the center, push the button opposite the needle position. I know this sounds confusing and I encourage you to experiment with moving the needle.
