I got one as a gift for xmas, love and own quite a few old Berninas . Tried it without sewing and it ran beautifully, but a couple days later thought I’d try sewing but after oiling a cleaning just a little, it blew the fuses! Tried it again and it did the same. It has a very old plug, but that seems fine. Decided I will have to take it to the repair shop. It was really dirty and unfortunately has spots on the housing part. I feel I have to save it. Thanks for your great videos!

It looks as if it's never been in sunlight, nor used for serious making of clothes for the family, sewn curtains by the truckload and mended & patched fabric out of memory! I remember the day my mother took delivery of hers in 1957. I was 10 and it soon became my job to de-fluff and oil it regularly. I still have it, having done all of the above and more, with its original belts & running gear! It purrs now as it did 54 yrs ago! It'll go for another 200 years if looked after! Cheers, Peter, NZ.

2018 - I just bought one of these for $40 buck!!! As it had the European motor I needed to get a step up transformer which was not too expensive and then a plug modifier. It sounds great! I had not used a sewing machine that had a knee pressure arrangement before. I kept trying to lift the presser foot instead.. . I love the way they mark the oiling points in red. Thank you so much for sharing this video.

Brian, Thanks for taking the time and making the effort to create this video. It solved a real problem that I had with a Bernina 730. I couldn't figure out why it had a different type of vertical shaft gear from all of the other 730s. It appears that they were replaced with (or originally came with) the same gear set as your 530. I would have never been able to figure it out if not for your having taken the time. Thanks SEW much!!

Hi Brian I can see that you obviously love and admire these beautiful machines. I have a Bernina Record 710 that I inherited from my Mum and her Mum. The drive belt is worn and I am trying to replace it. I have taken off the washer on the top drive wheel with the three outside wings and the two inside lock bits. It is now obviously that there are two possible ways to this washer in and I did not know this when I removed it. Do the two lock bits go deeply into the grooves on the drive axil or the other way where they just sit proud of thr grooves. I don't want to get it wrong and have the motor rip its self apart. I hope this chanel is stil live....

By Hi/Lo I presume you mean a low gear for more precise control, like the Husqvarna 21E I have as well as the Bernina 530 Record. The Bernina has no such feature, and although it's quite fast, the Husky, which was recently timed by a mechanic at 2600 rpm at the balance wheel, would leave it for dead. At those speeds though, you need a good eye and the best quality thread top and bottom! Cheers, Peter.

I have just bought the exact machine. I can't get the reverse stitch to work. I think it's because I can't raise the lever above the zero mark and I'm afraid to force it. Any ideas?

there is one black small lever on the right side under the handwheele, which is exactly just for the reason, to block that thing.

I'm curious if the 530 Record has the Hi/Lo switch on the machine; do you see one? I'm pretty sure the 730 & 830 had them. Enjoyed seeing the machine parts at work inside; sounds great.. Thanks for posting. I enjoyed the celtic pipes music too!

Your capacitor that is smoking on the motor, needs replaced or removed. All capacitors apparently develop fine cracks & leaks eventually, smoke, sometimes explode due to age & wear. According to 2 Bernina techs at the free Yahoo BerninaThirtySomething group, Steve & Rick, the capacitors were only to prevent interference with old electronics. They are apparently not needed now, at least on the old Bernina sewing machines. Something to do with everything going digital, so they don't cause interference with the signals anymore.

Just pull on it! Yank it back and forth on the sides if it doesn't come easily.

my husband's great aunt gave me her Bernina 530 after having it serviced but, the wheel and needle won't move. can anyone give me an idea on what i may be doing wrong? i've oiled it but it still seems to not want to go.

That sucker is going to need a major cleaning on the inside to get rid of all the dust and lint and junk. Looks like a really great machine though.
