This is an absolutely fabulous tutorial, I am an old woman who has never soldered or fixed a pedal before, Following the clear instruction a dead pedal has now come to life. I am thrilled.

With your very good video I was able to fix the type 286 pedal on the machine that my wife purchased inexpensively on eBay just to find that the foot control was dysfunctional, no longer supplied and any replacements were as costly as the machine. Basically your video, a 75 cent capacitor and 10 minutes at my bench and boom she was back in business and most happy. Sadly the bench technician at the sewing machine repair center in town said he couldn’t fix it. Thank you so much. Cheers!

Fixed mine, thank you. In case nobody has mentioned this the failed cap is rated at 300V ac, I used a 250V cap in the UK and it works fine.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... You're a gem! I just received a lovely little Bernina Sport that was fished out of a rubbish bin, presumably tossed because it has a foot pedal problem. Of course you have a video demonstrating how to fix it. I'm excited to get the little guy working. Thank you again for so generously sharing your expertise.

I've been so lucky and got offered a 1005 for free today and it has this problem. I took apart the pedal and can see a crack in the capacitor. I'm not game to solder but your video will surely make it a lot easier to find someone who can do it for me . Thank you, thank you, thank you!

This is awesome, without these instruction, I couldn't have done it. My capacitor was wider than what was on there, so I had to drill an extra hole in the circuit board. It worked, so thanks a lot!

This is so awesome! I’ve been going into the Textiles classes at our school (as a Support staff member) just to be an extra pair of hands, and I can sew on my own Janome machine, but I’d never seen anything as ridiculous as this class set of essentially racing cars for those poor year 9 girls to manage! I couldn’t believe there was no adjustment of the speed on these Bernina 1008s. I looked everywhere then took a photo to google it haha. I’ll be taking all of those foot peddles straight to the TAS teachers and their students over the other side of the school to offer them the chance to make a huge difference to the sanity of hundreds of people, I’m sure! Thank you so much for such a clear explanation and tutorial!

Many thanks for this - my mother's pedal just failed with this issue, and I was able to fix it with your help. She'd looked at getting a replacement pedal from Bernina and they wanted £100.

Wonderful video and it worked! Great narration and video shots. I purchased two capacitors (one as backup because I’m not good experienced at soldering) for $5.75 each +shipping via eBay. Did break a carbon tracer pin because I got ahead of the video ($4.95ea + shipping “carbon tracer pin for Bernina 290 foot control” from Millard Sewing) Replaced that. Got it back together and it works great. Did a little fine tuning of sped with the adjustment screw on the bottom of the pedal. Very satisfying repair.

Fantastic video, I did all five of mine this weekend. I did figure out that you can replace it without having to fully lift the board out and skip the whole part of putting the pins back in. Granted, I'm comfortable with this soldering iron. One of mine had the broken Rifa, one had already been replaced but I put all brand new ones in.

That's absolutely brilliant! Thank you so much - I have two Bernina machines, one older than this probably from the 60s and one from the 80s so it's really helpful. When you got the soldering iron out I thought it was way past my ability but you explained it so well I'm definitely going to give it a go - THANK YOU!

Excellent video Sir! This repair procedure applies to the Type 286 pedal as well. It looks identical. It seems as if this capasitor need to be 0,01 µF or else it will affect the power control negatively. I tried a 0,022 µF and the pedal became very sensitive.

Carefully and well explained. Good to see the RIFA capacitor being removed. I always replace it when I have such a pedal on the table. A little additional information that there is no need for a safety capacitor there (X/Y-rated). They are inside the machine. Keep up the good work!

I believe the B1000 Designer was designed partly for schools, so was cheaper than the other big Berninas of the era because it has some plastic parts. I have one and love it. Even though it's not quite a smooth as the 910 or 930/931, it's still a nice machine.

Could you please suggest any tips to “ establish “ that linkage without breaking any plastic parts ? I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Ramana.

would it be possible to use a different pedal with a bernina, if the lead is re-wired with correct socket type? i have a 289 style pedal and cant get it working and wondered if i re-wired the lead to the pedal with a different style of 'plug' could i use my pedal from my singer machine?
@mehere7796 ай бұрын
Yes - I've done that - should work provided your Singer pedal is the older type that controls using mains voltage, and not the modern type that plugs into the machine using a miniature jack plug. The Bernina cable has 3 wires - blue, black and brown. Almost certainly your pedal will have only 2 connectors - so ignore the brown one and connect the blue and black only.

I have the same problem with a vintage Kenmore. Both the original and a brand new foot controller do the same thing. So if it isn’t the foot controller, what could the problem be with the sewing machine? I can’t seem to find any reference to explain possibilities.
@InStitches Жыл бұрын
Hi. There could be a capacitor in the machine, maybe in behind the plug or around the motor.

@InStitches2 жыл бұрын
Depending where you are, there are a few places you could try - www.digikey.com/ or RS Components etc. They are not original Bernina parts so not sure of part number sorry. Not even sure Bernina would sell a component like this. They would probably suggest replacing the whole foot controller or at least the circuit board. Thanks.
