Cody, I need your assistance. I’ve had both of these machines and now have purchased the 990. The one area that I have not seen any tutorials for is how to keep directional stitches centered. Would you be able to share the technique for this?

If I have pin basted my quilt, is that enough to stabilize the quilt for these type of stitches?

Unfortunately no that is not enough stabilization. You really need to keep those layers of fabric and batting from shifting in the stitching area because the feed dogs have to move in so many directions in that small area. You have to essentially have those layers lightly fused together to really make a difference. :) Hopefully this helps.

Thanks Cody. Been exploring those decorative stitches...but I don’t think I have those that are bigger than 9mm. Is there a clever way to make the decorative stitches a bit bolder? I played with the back stepping feature but it doesn’t work well with decorative stitches and I even broke the needle with a dense deco stitch 😟 xo PS. I have the 480

Sorry you broke a needle never fun. On your 480 the only way that comes to mind for making stitches a little more bold is to use a thicker thread. So the traditional sewing thread is a 50wt you can try using a 40wt thread this will give you a bolder look or even a 30 wt. However when you start using thicker threads you need to make sure you are using a needle that can accommodate that weight. For example a good needle will defiantly be a top stitch needle because it has a larger eyelet and a size 80 or 90 will work great. Hopefully this helps.. P.S. if you are working with a polyester thread they typically are thinner than some cottons so you might have to go larger (thicker weight) :)

Thank you. How do you keep the stitches aligned in a straight line? Would drawing a line to follow be advisable? I have a Bernina 200E that has sideways motion capability.

Thats exactly it, drawing a line down the center of where you want the stitches to be is one of the best ways to keep those sideways stitches straight because you need some sort of a reference. :)
