How to thread a BERNINA sewing machine - threading the upper thread correctly

In this video, we will show you how to thread the upper thread on your BERNINA sewing machine correctly and what you should pay attention to when threading.
Correct threading of the upper thread will eliminate many sources of error and help you enjoy beautiful stitches.
The threading process shown in the video applies to all current BERNINA sewing machine models with the exception of the 8 series.

When putting the spool on the horizontal spool holder, is the thread to come off the spool clockwise or counter clockwise?

Hi Stephanie, this depends on the spool type. With small spools, the direction in which the thread unwinds is usually irrelevant. Detailed information can be found in this article: weallsew.com/sewing-machine-thread-spool-pin-tips/ For spools where it is not clear in which direction the thread should unwind, there is a trick: Pull off approximately half a meter of thread and leave it hanging. If the thread loop twists, it is the wrong unwinding direction. @@BerninaInternational. Fortunately my husband is German so he translated!! The confusion I’ve been having is in my manual for the B535, it states thread should unwind in clockwise fashion when using horizontal spool holder. Which means thread would come from the underside of spool when first mounted. However nearly every vid I’ve seen from professionals, including some bernina reps, has the thread unwinding counter clockwise (thread coming from top side of spool). A lot of contradictions. However, the German vid makes the most sense with regard to actual thread behavior vs a hard and fast rule. Thank you!

Can you clarify that when the thread comes down it goes to back of thread guide 6 right to left and then to thread guide 7 left to right. I would liked to have seen a clearer shot of that detail. The automatic threader takes some getting used to. I struggled at first but I am starting to get it on the second or third try. Attaching to the thread cutter makes a difference as I think I was just holding too tight.

You don't specify, but from watching it appears that as you bring the needle threader half way down you also lower the presser foot, which had been in the up position until that moment. Is that correct?

Hi calisson, it depends of the type of machine you own. All machine models with an automatic presser foot lift will lower the foot automatically as soon as you push sown the needle threader.

Hi calisson, no, the BERNINA 4 series doesn`t have an automatic presser foot lift. You have to raise and lower the foot manually at the back with a lever.

Does the upper thread need to be on the right or left side of the tension in slot one?

Hi Sew my own clothes, are you referring to 01:52 of the video? The thread has to run between the tensions discs. Make sure to raise the presser foot before threading. This will open the tension discs.

No matter how often I thread and retread my 990Q sewing machine I many times get an error message prompting me that something is wrong with the threading. This doesn’t always happen but often enough that is becomes a real nuisance and is annoying having to retread the machine again. I am threading exactly as you are demonstrating. I have taken it in twice now to have it checked out but I still often get the error when nothing is wrong.

@@dodielabbe8644 Can you please send a picture of the error message to [e-mail]? If possible, please add close-up shots of the threading path, from spool to needle. Maybe this will help us find the reason. If not, I'm afraid you will have to contact your dealer again as we can't offer the same level of support without actually sitting at the machine.

I have the same kind of issue with my 770QE. I keep getting the upper thread error even though it’s threaded. I’ve had it serviced and still get this error.

I’m still having the same problems a year later after having it serviced again. I find it happens most often either polyester thread. I get so frustrated I end up turning off the thread monitoring in the settings. I know it’s not the best practise but there is nothing wrong with my thread or threading

Hi Michael, surely you have turned on the switch? If the machine doesn’t power up (it does take a few seconds) after plugging in and after turning on the switch, then please ontact your BERNINA dealer
