Tip 3 is something I learned years ago, and would like to highlight. I always struggled using metronomes - for some reason, I tune out the clicks or beeps and end ignoring it. What really helped me was using a drum machine or writing a simple drum beat in Guitar Pro. That made a massive difference helping me to keep time when practicing. Thanks for reminding me of that now I'm getting back into guitar again! I'll certainly try out these extra tips too and see how I get on.

The first exercise and the explanation behind it are extremely useful. I remember being a kid in highschool and thinking that all I had to do was pick as fast as possible, and I'd be this amazing talented musician. It ended up taking me almost a year to learn to slow down to anything under 32nd notes, and was extremely frustrating. Anyone here who is first starting out, this is very important. Take the advice.

Ever since I watched that sweep picking video I’ve been practicing daily with 3 different arpeggios that I discovered that I can alternate between and I was originally very slow but now I’ve picked up being able to do triplets in time to 120 bpm which to me feels fast but it isn’t. Never thought I’ve ever be able to sweep. Also I got rid of the banana hand technique that I was so used to using. I can actually relax my left hand for once it seems. Didn’t realize just how tense I get and it also makes sweeping a lot easier to do.

I have the SoundBrenner metronome watch and app. Its great. You can set the clicks for quarter notes, 8th, 16th and several others. You can even adjust the sounds of the clicks. Wife got it for me for christmas a few years ago and its been a great practice tool.
@RobJMeronek3 жыл бұрын
Great video! I’d also add that if you can nail a complete song down to a metronome beat it’s really easy to thicken the sound up with layers as all you have to do is line up the parts and the whole song’s lined up. Way easier than multitracking by having to restart the song each time.

@@JohnViguerie just go slow. Unless you have a physical disability you have no excuse to practice. Just do it very slowly straight up painful slowly. I could play at 200 bpm if I wanted but is usually practice slowly at 96 bpm to be sure I get as clean as possible

I like doing a 1 2 3 4 12345678 1 2 3 4 12345678 kinda pattern for bursts It definitely helps to have rests when pushing your limits

So i also use the reference points (note) on the click when using fast runs. I also have heard its really helpful if you can accent them. Obviously this is true to a certain extent. It gets tough to accent at a certain speed. Should i keep trying to accent? Or just make a mental note of the reference point? thoughts?

Hi Bernth, love your videos. I'm just wondering if you are able to point me in the right direction. I've been playing for a year and a half and play every day for an hour or two. The problem I have is I never do practise routines because I just want to learn songs and then become frustrated with the song I'm learning and start another song, going round in circles. I really need a good practice routine but I'm struggling on where to start, and which ones I should focus on to begin with. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

One way I got better was if I couldn’t play a song. I would create my own using elements of the song that I could play. It’s pretty fun. And I would set the metronome to a speed that was good enough for me to not strain my fingers and wrist trying to play.

Could you please explain the picking pattern? Why is there a pick stroke UP (V) after the first 3 notes? My pick is coming down from the 8th fret, it seems like a pick stroke down would be easier instead of moving my plectrum in place so I can do a UP stroke??
@ATthemusician2 жыл бұрын
A weird trick that has helped me get faster is intentionally setting the metronome 10-20bpm faster than I can play and trying to keep up with it, then slowing back down to my actual target speed. It isn't an absolute guarantee to work but usually helps.

I find it very difficult to pick fast in acoustic guitar!! @Bernth, is it possible for me to pull this off in acoustic guitar??
@jm78594 жыл бұрын
I've reach 16th notes @ 150 bpm in acoustic guitar and Im using .012 gauge strings. I realised how playability affects your progress. It's almost impossible to go higher than 150 bpm because you cannot do the "light touch" on your fretting hand. It will just sound messy. The note will not ring.
