Panama Hattie (1942) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #PanamaHattie
Hattie Maloney (Ann Sothern) is a gaudy, good-hearted nightclub singer who tends to love above her station. This time, it’s pedigreed officer Dick Bulliet (Dan Dailey, Jr.), and it’s for real. But there’s one little problem: he’s got a small daughter so ladylike she makes Emily Post look like Tugboat Annie - and she’s not impressed with Hattie’s bangles and bows. And Hattie’s got a trio of protectors, three goofball gobs who think that maybe Hattie’s too good for Dick. This World War II musical sparkles with Cole Porter's music and lyrics.
Directed By Norman Z. McLeod, Roy Del Ruth, Vincente Minnelli
Starring Red Skelton, Ann Sothern, Rags Ragland

@@phantom12321800 - Yes, also the type of split. Either way, thats an insane amount of pressure that is exerted. I don't know if anyone could do that and not injure themselves without spreading out the fall. I spent the last 20 minutes googling and trying to figure out how much force the impact was and have come up empty handed. I know Force is mass x acceleration but there is a lot to that acceleration part that I have no interest in trying to figure out at this time.

Good lord, as a tap fan, I've worshiped the Nicholas Brothers, and from a few clips had always thought of the Berry Brothers as second fiddle to them. But now, with this and a few other clips I'd not seen before, they go right up there with Harold and Fayard. The cane work is incredible, but that leap off the balcony had me floored, so to speak. For sheer height, I'm not sure even the Nicholas Brothers ever fell that far, or would want to try. And I can't imagine any dancer today ever even thinking, yeah, I'll try leaping off that balcony onto the floor. Where did they get the ideas, where did they get the talent, and where did they get the balls to even try these things?

And if you watch carefully....the railing falls apart when they jump over/through it. There are pieces on the floor when they land, and pieces fall into the orchestra...BUT they keep playing, unperturbed. This must have been rehearsed extensively, and the Berry Bros. must have been SO relieved to have it done! I can't imagine doing a jump like that over and over and over....
@ROGER2095
@ROGER2095 4 жыл бұрын
I believe the railing was supposed to fall apart - It shattered when it hit the ground and sticks of wood just aren't that brittle. If the railing was built normally with ordinary wood, it would have snagged them if they didn't clear it and ruined the trajectory of their fall - surely causing injury. I don't know why they'd want the railing to break - it didn't add anything to the thrill of seeing them leap - but I think it was intentional.
@steve1253
@steve1253 3 ай бұрын
Yes it was designed that way. Besides being safer, it allowed them to add five feet to the height of the staircase. Without it, they would have had to lower the top of the stairs those five feet so they could jump over the rail. I don't know which would have been more impressive but it's very clever.

Have watched this over and over recently, and my new favorite moment is after they've killed it with a precise routine of amazing footwork, cane work, and sailed through the air across the entire set, the three guys joyfully walk up a few steps and out the door. And the very last guy, on the very last step, appears to maybe catch his foot on the stair and jerks forward slightly to catch himself from tripping. I guess they practiced a lot on the balcony leap, but forgot to practice walking up stairs, lol.

you are completely correct RACISM. if the Berry Brothers were white, they would have been called "The greatest dancers to ever live. period." It's no secret that there were many racist people around in the 1930s, but the Berry Brothers performed in Radio City Music Hall on a regular basis. The fact that you never heard of them before isn't because of racist people. I can guarantee you that there are a lot of talented people of all races that I have never heard of before. I don't think it is because there is a group of racists trying to suppress these people. It's most likely I am unaware of their existence due to my own ignorance.

In 1938, at the Cotton Club there was a face-off dance competition between the Nicholas Brothers and the Berry Brothers. It has become a legendary confrontation, a sort of dance-fight for supremacy. By some accounts the Berry Brothers were more athletic but the Nicholas Brothers were better overall performers - better at pleasing the crowd.
