Awhh, That's " The White House" ❤️❤️ My grandparents lived there for many many years and we only just sold it about a year ago, after their passing. I teared up over what you guys said about living there.. That place holds so many amazing memories for me. (....Except when it came time to put the Christmas decorations up.. I don't think a year went by without my mother or I having a near death experience putting the wreaths on the attic windows.. 😆 ) Thank you for sharing this and for the kind words. 😊

My dad worked in the mines in Berwind in the late 1920's through the 1930's. He and my mother ( originally from Fireco) lived in Newhall. All four of my siblings were born and the oldest died there. My family moved to Princewick (in Raleigh county) in 1940, where I was born in 1943. We moved to Odd in 1944, then Big Stick in 1950. In 1951 (Mom refused to stay in Big Stick any longer) , we moved to Fireco, where I spent the rest of my youth near my beloved maternal grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins galore!

Many years before the GRMC was there, my granddad owned a small store in the lot beside where that GRMC is. Called it the R&M market. My aunt and uncle lived just next to the store and my grandparents next to that. It’s all gone now, and I can’t tell what’s behind that big fence, where their homes once stood. My brother and I used to fish off the bridge just up at the turn. Behind that were the railroad tracks, and on up the hill was a Pentecostal church. Went there once and between the talking in tongues and holy rolling, it scared me half to death. That was the late 70s. Simpler times and great fun spending summers in Berwind with my grandparents and aunt bet and uncle Jim.

Thank you so much for this. We lived in Berwind in 1956-1957. My father pastored the church you show at 2:26 & 4:11 At 4:25, that turnoff went back to another row of houses -- much less fancy -- where we lived. There was an alley between the houses on the paved road and our houses. The railroad tracks were up the embankment. I can still remember my mother running out to get the clothes off the line when the train was coming so they weren't dirtied again with the coal soot. We kids played in the coal bin on the ally and always needed a scrubbing in the 20-gallon tub. I once was dressed up to go somewhere and, instead of staying clean, ran around and fell. A small piece of black clinker got embedded in my side and was visible below the skin for decades. Our outhouse was one of the few that had a light in it. The switch was inside the house. Whenever we had company, my father liked to prank them by turning off the light while they were out there at night. He did it again when his cousin Roland was visiting and everyone had a good laugh when Roland came back in the house. But they had forgotten Roland was blind, so the joke was on them. Until she passed away last year, my mother always spoke of the people of Berwind with great affection. She would tell how she would make her grocery list and cut it up into individual pieces of paper for each item. The pieces of paper would be placed in the offering plate at church and passed around, with someone from each family reaching in and taking one of them. The groceries would appear sometime during the week. That's how the church provided for its pastor. At that turnoff at 4:25 is where I -- though only 5 at the time -- knew something was coming. The creek was higher than I had ever seen it before. In the morning there was water everywhere. Men -- perhaps from the National Guard -- lifted us out of our house through the window. I believe we stayed with the Wades who lived up the hill above the railroad tracks. Even though the houses on our row were built up on posts or blocks -- high enough that we as kids could play under there -- the flood waters rose and filled the interior with deep mud. We left Berwind after that. I last visited Berwind in 1976 while driving cross-country. Our old house was gone then. Thank you again for this. It stirred many memories.

It is a whole new world there and as you two are doing so well showing what is and was. I think it would be an incredible video and true treasure to find an old timer like that gentleman and just sit down and talk while picking his memory. Maybe some coffee and pie with Shane, Melody and guest. You both can be charming and interesting so what is lacking? Interviews from people who lived the life and created the history is a strong appeal too many genres, historical, regional, Americana etc etc. I as all your followers appreciate all the time and effort you all put in. I want to start by saying I LOVE WV. I grew up in Pemberton, southern mine fields. Dad, granddads, uncles, worked and died in mines. The coal companies never cared for the people in West Virginia. It’s sad the people there still feel a loyalty to them. 75% of the kids I went to school with left when they graduated and that’s sad. My family had to move because we had no way of life. The people there are wonderful

I grew up in Fireco, attended Stoco High School in Coal City. After high school and six months in a mine, I enlisted in the USMC (1/16/62) and made a career of it. I remember going to the railway station in Pemberton to get my new "English" style bicycle when I was 11 years old! It was too large to come by US Mail (no UPS, FED X, etc. back in those days).

This was a nice video. Glad to see that spring has come upon the mountains. It's always a sad thing to me that a once lively, vibrant and prosperous place has fallen so far from that. Loved seeing the photos of Berwind's heyday. In my mother's childhood home, there was a cart in the basement so coal could be hauled from the spot where the coal shute was over to the coal fired furnace. It was still there in the 70s when I was a kid. It had the Pocahontas Coal name on the side. They had converted the furnace to burn natural gas in the 50s, but that cart was still sitting in a junked up corner of the basement where all the forgotten or unwanted stuff got put. Great job, ya'all.

Needy kids at Christmas and things like that. Also, I had a customer in Abingdon years ago after learning that I lived in McDowell county, told me only nonresidents said it like me. McDowell. He said I couldn't be a native because they all say MacDowell.lol Good video guys.

Great video Shane and Melody. I follow a very nice lady on KZbin named Shirl McKinney and she lives in Berwind. Her channel is Tranquil Stitches. Brewing looks like a cute little town. Thanks for doing the video.

West Virginia sure is an interesting place and a challenging place to understand. I went to Berwind once around 2003, been to War and Coalwood and Gary. At one time i read population of McDowell County was 160,000, now about 16,000, so a 90 percent decline. Coal has played the biggest role in the states history and is the source of most of its problems including population decline, economic stagnation and drug addiction and political corruption. If there was never coal in west virginia today it would be the most desirable place in America instead of a place with 90 percent population decline. Yet people blame Obama for the troubles of the state. They have been so completely brainwashed by the coal industry that they cant see how coal has ruined their state so that the water isnt safe to drink. No one wants to live in a place with unsafe drinking water. There should be the cleanest purest streams, mountains filled with old growth trees, million dollar homes like Boone and Asheville ... instead there is poverty and depression. Sen Byrd for all his might and love for the state could not see that big coal was his biggest enemy. The chapter in "Days of Destruction Days of Revolt" by2 Chris Hedges focuses on Gary West Virginia and is poignant reading

Hmm, you missed the main attraction: Berwind Lake. And, attach the letter D to the end for Berwind, not Berwin. Otherwise, thanks for the memories! I went to school at the Junior high, a two story building along the river. I think it is still there.

You said it right!! MACDOWELL not McDowell, as it's spelled. Lol I'll never forget sitting in a pre-trial conference with McDowell Circuit Court Judge Booker T Steven's when he told the attorney I was working with, how to pronounce it!! I loved it!!
