She used to ride down and stay in our Forest CC Club hut near the start of the "sporting" E1, off the A11 north of Bishops Stortford. There was a note in the visitors book "Beryl snores". So now you know.

In the cold winter of 1963/64 I was out riding with a chum when I looked back and saw a figure on a bike coming up behind us. We pushed hard, still behind us. Sat on brake hoods, still behind us. Down on the drops and pushing hard when the figure drew along side us. " Good morning boys,!" It was Beryl Burton,,,! The World Champion and she spoke to us,,,!!! We stopped at a cafe and we grinning and jabbering " We seen Beryl Burton,!! We seen Beryl Burton!!!" That was nearly 60 years ago and I still enjoy the moment!! Thank you Beryl Burton RIP.

After all these years, I finally got to 'see' the Great Beryl Burton'. As a child mum would often talk about her. Being a born and bred Yorkshireman, I can see my female contemporaries in her. It used to be a common saying here..'In Yorkshire the men are men and the women are men'. Because we recognised, for generations, women are equal to men, in energy, stamina and all other activity's in life. Here they simply had to be. As a consequence, Beryl sadly died 8 years after this film was made at a young 58, as her daughter said, 'Mum was just worn out'. As Monty Python joked, in their Yorkshiremen sketch, 'When I were a lad....'', yes life was tough for many, not just in Yorkshire. You didn't adopt the 'Victorian Work Ethic', you were forced into it simply to survive. Beryl's competition career flourished at a time when today's achievement rewards weren't available. She deserved even better than she manifestly got in abundance. A proud lass from a still proud race of people.

How sad to learn that she died so young 😟

A "one off", very down to earth, devoted herself to cycling, was true to herself. Did what she wanted to do. Comes across as a charming, lovely person.

I hope I don't insult anybody, but she was the first lady that caught me in a time trial. I was her minute man and she just flew by me. I didn't mind because she was Beryl Burton. RIP BERYL. It is a shame you never got the credit when you was around. But you are recognised now.

I came across this lady when I heard Maxine peak say she was given beryl biography,Maxine got me intrigued.i think she said she wrote s thing for radio about her.i will be searching for that.beryl sounds like a true personality,pity she is not quoted as on of our sporting heroes because she certainly seems so.

Beryl was our greatest ever woman racer. Pity her sporting achievements were only appreciated by other cyclists.

Truly a legend of the sport, Beryl was decades ahead of her time. Man, I would give anything to see her ride against Marianne Vos, I think would have had some amazing battles. A proud Leeds lad watching this just now, thank you so much for the upload!
@gyp3xp484 жыл бұрын
I would bet that she would still be a world beater. With modern training methods she would have had no problem.
@hutchmusician4 жыл бұрын
gyp3xp48 I agree, although Vos is maybe the only woman who’s come after who could give her a run for her money.

@@hutchmusician Hi, your are right. But as with all sports , it is unfortunately impossible to compare. They can only beat the opposition of the day.

Beryl does not get the credit she richly deserves. A great cyclist in any era .beryl would be up there with the best.

A remarkable lady whom I was aware of when I began cycling as a sport in 1964 and she will never be replaced as “ being the best female cyclist ever” even with the scientific and technological advances made in the sport. Lastly, as my dig at cycling clubs the world over they all seem to be infested with unfriendly, unhelpful club members who lack human emotional development and empathy for others, but not Beryl! Needless to say I gave up being a member of a cycling club fifty years ago but I still cycle 12000 kms solo annually ... and I love my sport.

Not pink, polar blue. It's an 1984 Raleigh Road Ace 12, great ride then and a great ride now! Reynolds 531 competition full set and fork, I have one myself, ebay find. it's better and lighter than my 2017 Specialized Allez!

It’s usual to go down a size compared to your usual with timetrial bikes.

The smaller the better. Less energy to overcome. Longer seat post. When I started riding in 1973, seat posts were 120mm. Now my bike has a 400mm seat post
