Michael Rogers was on course to win the 2002 Tour Down Under when his bike broke. No team car was nearby, so he took a nearby spectator's bike which was almost exactly the same as his own team bike.

The best part of this is how efficient the spectators were at replacing the bike. It was just as good as, if not better, than pro teams handle the situation. The dude had the bike halfway out of the car before the bike throw!

I don’t thing anyone understands just how incredible and unprecedented this actually is. I mean if this had happened today in something like the Tour De France or any grand tour or classic, it would just be absolutely insane!!! And the fan, well he deserves the win almost as much as the winner themselves. The fact that the second place guy crashes... into a motorcycle with 6 mins up on the yellow jersey only to crash and then get a bike to go onto win is mind blowing.

@@scottjolteon9033 ...what they didn't check was the bike he threw... because it is speculated it was a motorized one, so he faked it breaking down and then he got a real bike that cost 10k to finish. The other bike if ever retrieved must have been replaced by an identical without a motor. They make it super hard to believe it is true by the absolute coldness they have at the interview together. The other guy was quick to leave the frame.

A great deal of roadside spectators on bike races are cyclists themselves, and there are plenty of bikes on the side of the road all the time. But of course he was lucky that there was a proper road bike nearby, and it's owner was willing to part with it.

Hearing Phil Liggett's call in the first segment reminded me just how much I miss hearing Paul Sherwen alongside him today. I would find myself tuning into races on the tele not only to hear Phils exhilarating calls, but to also hear the almost professor like history lessons of the course and surrounding areas from Paul. There will never be a better cycling broadcasting duo than those two.

I was racing in the Goodwood festival of speed in my E-type when I lost traction and slammed it into the wall. A spectators loaned me their ‘07 Camry to finish the race, for some reason I was disqualified and deported from the UK.

I would have been thankful to that spectator for letting me borrow his bike no matter what type it is. Especially if i could keep up with the flow of the race with it. But it look like he didn't show a lot of gratitude to him. That suck. I got a Mtn bike i ride daily, i clutch acceleration and speed with it doing 35-50km/h at my best on flat and i also have a race bike doing usually 45-60km/h on flat. I like both but, Montreal require Mtn bike because of all the pothholes in the winter.

There are so many people riding insanely expensive bikes nowadays who don't actually need them whatsoever. I saw some old guy riding a full carbon fibre, full suspension Ibis the other day and he was wobbling along at about 4kms per hour!

Adam Pyke - you are a great man right down to the way your bike leaves your hand and rolls to the race rider in one graceful fluid motion. MR was one very very lucky race contender that day. People say they wouldn't lend a bike after he threw his team bike. I'd be more worried about the killer motorbike crew that put him there to start with. One of the best things I've ever seen in sport.
