I love that Beryl husband is Indian but that she didn't use that as an "excuse" to talk about a culture that is not the one she is born and raised into. I think she very well knows A LOT about indian culture and traditions and food but she decided not to say "well you know, my husband is indian so i know things" but she was like "here are some amazing indiand chefs etc cause what do i know". That is what respect for other cultures is like and that's the way you show how much you appreciate that culture without appropiating (is this a proper word? i don't know, but u guys get it I hope) it. Well done Beryl, love your channel and your content so much! Baci (means kisses) from Italy!

That is some BS that only White Western PostModernists can make. All this not born into a culture means I can't talk about it is stuff that makes no sense when you have white Indophiles that know way more about certain Indian traditions than brown Indian kids in cities. This is just a fact of life. It's nothing abnormal or appropriating(another BS word). Especially Indians get triggered when people talk about cultural appropriation.. We want literally everyone to try and do things Indian. That's why we swarm comment sections talking about Indian food and customs . We love sharing it.

I am a white American who is a nanny to an Indian family who also happen to be fully vegan, both kids included. They have taught me so much about Indian food, so I didn’t actually learn anything from the video because I basically have it all already in my house now. I think Indian food is the best food in the world, and their spices are just insane. Because of them, I eat way more lentils, including idli dosa sambhar with toor dal and urad dal. I have learned the difference between many of these lentils and how to cook them, and if anyone is wanting to eat more lentils in a super delicious way, just look up Indian recipes(you prob will have to buy a bunch of spices. (Cumin seeds,jeera) mustard seeds, haldi or turmeric, dahnia or coriander powder, spicy red chili powder or Kashmiri lal mirch powder and a few others that are just the basics. Also having a pressure cooker is vital when cooking lentils or they will take hours depending on the type. I think it’s so cool that beryl is married to an Indian which gives her so much exposure to Indian cuisine because it is actually a big deal in India. And EVERYTHING is homemade other there. Like if you were going to make everything from scratch like how many do in India, you would literally be in the kitchen all day, which is why it’s super common in India to have a cook, because it’s very cheap actually.
@bluenred
@bluenred 10 ай бұрын
Its not common to hire a cook in India expect for super rich people. And It does not take hours to prepare any regular Indian food , atleast for Indians. Its foreigners who are usually slower in cooking indian food, as it take them time to understand and learn it. Things that take hours for foreigners to prepare and cook, Indians can usually do within minutes, especially if they cook regularly.
@itsgonnabeanaurfromme

@@bluenredthat's ridiculous. Why making it about race? It will take faster to cook something IF YOU KNOW HOW TO COOK IT PROPERLY. saying indians can cook it faster is so stupid and racist. And no, lentils will never take minutes to cook. You clearly know nothing about cooking or indian culture.

When travelling I always take time to go to large supermarkets. I refer to them as *Museums Of Daily Life*. I absolutely love doing that. They give you such a big insight into the local culture. The only sad thing I noticed over the past years that due to globalisation a lot of supermarkets in very different countries started selling the same brand items. It feels like loosing parts of their identity to me...

I totally agree... Grocery stores are the museums of life... And when u live in a city with so much of diversity.. For eg: London or NYC or Toronto or SF or Sydney where you have so many nationalities and their own neighbourhoods - a visit to grocery stores is a whole different experience altogether... For instance... I live in toronto in an area which is a cross between Asian and Indian neighbourhoods... It's always interesting to see local grocery stores that how one Indian store keeps some items of the Asian groceries and vice versa... And how even other nationalities visit them just to even try new thing that they never knew existed...

Bitter gourd is one of my all time favorite vegetables and here is my mother's recipe for you. Peal the outer bitter undulated skin, soak in salt water as you do, cut in half or thirds, split, remove the insides and seeds. Next finely chop or dice, keep in salt water. Now in a hot pan add oil, splatter a pinch of cumin seeds, one finely chopped onion cook till translucent - golden, 1/4th spoon turmeric, chilli powder, salt. Can finish off with chopped cilantro/coriander. Serve with chapati (whole heat flat bread). A recipe good enough for 3 to 4 small to medium size bitter gourd. There are also some other amazing Indian recipes for stuffed butter gourd, you might wanna check those out too. Love from India!

Patra is made from the leaves of a vegetable named arbi. The leaves are cut vertically long and the paste of soaked white urad dal(LENTIL) with some spices in it is to be spreaded on the leaves and then the leaves are rolled out and deep fried... Even the vada is made from that dal(lentil) paste

I appreciate her pointing to some Indian chefs and vloggers. But she doesn't need to acknowledge anything for nothing she had done. She has ancestry from Eastern Europe and no "White" Eastern European has ever caused any damage to the Indian Subcontinent (Bharat). She could be white, black, brown, yellow and she must not need any permission from anyone to talk about Indian culture or cuisine. I know there are insensitive people out there who don't respect other cultures but an average person shouldn't be obliged to acknowledge every time they involve in things of "other" cultures.

We use shredded colocasia leaves and cook them in coconut milk with chili, lemongrass, garlic, shallots, ginger, and shrimp paste (depends if you're not allergic but without shrimp paste it's fine) we call it "laing", we also use the colocasia leaves in wrapping a ground shrimp mixture and cooking it in coconut milk, we call it "tinuktok".

Have you ever been into an Indian grocery store? I can't make a blanket statement but every single one I've been to the owners are so excited to be sharing their knowledge and culture that a lot of the time they end up shopping with me. Answering questions-giving recommendations. I suggest you find a recipe that you're interested in trying and when you go into the store strike up a convo with the employees. I bet you'll leave with SO much information!!

I encourage u to ask the staff questions. I guarantee they'll be glad to help. I am Indian and have lived outside India, and even I have helped non-Indians in Indian grocery stores (no, I didn't work there!). That's how much we love talking about our food. If there is such a thing as food proselytisation, we love doing it 😂😂

When we travel, going to the supermarkets is one of our favourite things to do. It's one of the ways that you can experience the kind of everyday culture of a place, that isn't so 'half-baked' with an underlaying touristy intention. Would be lovely to see everyone's grocery shop experiences from around the world. Thanks Beryl - great idea!

I also lived in Bangalore for two years and worked in Jersey City (in Journal Square) and miss regular access to Indian specialty foods. This is great! If you haven't been to the Indian shops in Jersey City, you have to go! Dosa Hut was my old favorite.

The closest, most appropriate and most authentic any non-indian (although you are one of us now :P ) youtuber has come to exploring the essentials of an indian mart. Beryl, you have truly touched base on food items from across the country. To top it all off, this video not only punches indians living abroad with a wholesome nostalgia but also acts as a good entry point for anyone deciding to learn about the desi culture.
