You've proposed a good alternative to the original plan, though unless the former kitchen was definitely going to be a bedroom, just a w/c would suffice. It might get used as a TV room or an office, neither of which need another shower.

So I'm guessing you're not a plumber. Where is that upstairs toilet waste draining to? A macerator next to one's head at night, draining down to one's kitchen, sounds like a figurative and literal sh!t show.
